oh cheese is my arch nemisis, I love cheese soooooo much I could eat it all day. It doesnt help that I use cheese to train shadow, and I alaways have to have a piece when she has one. I could eat cheese all day.....i love it, on toast, with crackers, with apple....

Me too! I LOVE cheese. That is why I am trying the South Beach diet (in a modified version) because you can still have cheese on it. I am like you though, I don't really need to lose weight, I just want my pants to fit better. Plus, I just want to try to lead a healthier lifestyle and try to choose healthier foods. It can be really hard sometimes though, but I would have to say that in the past two weeks, my cravings have been cut down considerably.

I think that Weight Watchers is a good all around healthy diet. I find, for myself just to make the calories I eat each day be health and cutting wayyy back on portions, then I don't think I'm on a diet. It's worked for me. :D

Cheese was what kept me from losing much weight when I was veggie...

Here's another thing that worked well for me recently: Go have a very traumatizing experience...I didn't really eat for three days after the mastiff thing and since it was so hot outside, I think I dropped 3 or 4 pounds in as many days.

Ugh diets. I've done 2 in my life, they both worked great, except that as soon as you start eating normally again you get all the weight back... or more. I managed to lose 30 lbs, and now I have 30 more than I used to... The doctor I saw for the second diet warned me about it, that basically if you do a diet you have to do it all your life, but it depends a lot on your metabolism too... I pretty much gave up on diet when I learned that my metabolism was just really bad, I just can't imagine eating only 1300 calories all my life lol. The worst thing is, I don't eat worse food than most people, except that they can do with a 2000 calories diet and I can't.

I had a friend who lost 60 lbs with weight watcher in about a year, then started working and couldn't do it anymore, and she got all the weight back and 20 more...

What I mean is, don't expect to lose what you want in 6 weeks. If you lose too fast, you just run the risk of getting it back just as fast. You need to just try to eat healthy, do some excercise as you can. I just don't believe in diets that tell you what you can eat, for me it's just short term solutions because at some point you won't be able to follow it anymore, and you'll get the weight back.

But again, I'm still 60 lbs overweight so probably not the best advice in term of diet and losing weight... but I admit I really hate excercising for the sake of excercising too.

Thanks for the great advice everyone. I've decided to go to a boxercise class tonight, and just start eating more healthy, cut out the crap and have smaller portions. I suppose i dont really need to lose weight, I just want to look better, get fitter and more trim. I hope if I eat sensibly and up my exercise, I may be happier with the way I look by the time I go to new york.

10 tips that are working for me now...long but maybe beneficial

Ever since I got out of high school I've been puting on weight - I looked & felt like a friggin beached whale, went from a very tone and slender 110 to what I am now (no I'm not telling) in 6 years!! I've tried sooo many "diets", "fads" & "exercise routines" but nothing worked. I stayed VERY depressed about it for the past 2 years. About 3 1/2 weeks ago my husband decided he was going to clean his mother's & grandparent's stuff out of the garage enough to set up our exercise equipment & start watching what he ate & he wanted to know if i'd join him, of course I'm like HECK YEAH!! It bothered me that I spent the past couple years soooo depressed over my weight & begged him constantly to work with me on this & I got nothing in return but he changed at the drop of a hat to match his best friend. Either way I decided to suck it up & take what I could get. We began an exercise/food routine...his is to eat things & exercise to make him bulk up but also tone up some & mine is to eat & exercise to loose weight & tone. After 3 weeks (will be 4 sunday) I've lost 7 lbs & toned up some & his arms & shoulders are AWESOME!! It does bother me that hubby doesn't see it...it would be so benifical to hear a compliment from him, but I'm still going to work on it, I've gotten compliments at work so that helps some. I enjoy exercising with him & it really helps at supper time that I can fix something good for the both of us that we'll both eat & not like it was before. Before I'd want to eat healthy & he'd want a whole meal of high sodium, fat...etc food. It was too hard to fix two seperate meals & he wouldn't eat what I wanted so I had to eat what he wanted, I'm sure ya'll know that story. I tried to fix it in the healthiest ways possible & eat it in smaller portions but that can only go so far. I know every person is different & different things work for different people but what I found to work was
*1st to have a determined buddy (my hubby FINALLY). I wouldn't go exercise on my own because it took away from my time with him. Now I still get to be with him but doing more than laying on the couch watching tv.
*Also again the meals help alot, not fixing 2 seperate meals but 1 healthy one that works for the both of us. If I get a craving for sweets I will go for the natural sweets found in nature, not processed sweets (ie: instead of grabbing the little pack of low fat chocolate pudding I will go for a bowl of grapes or pineapple chunks).
*I'm not a breakfast person but when doing research I found that several dr's say an apple in the morning will give you more energy than a cup of coffee if you can't/won't eat a whole nutritious breakfast. Eating ANYTHING before 10:00am makes me sick so instead I grab a frosty mug of 100% pure apple juice to take to work (frosty mug cause the juice is best chilled I think). Try it, I was suprised to find it actually worked.
*For supper I fix nutritious things like fish - not adding a lot of "extras". I use low sodium salt instead of regular salt. I still fix pretty much the same things but in healthier ways and eat smaller portions..eat till I'm full not stuffed. I also try to eat a bigger meal for lunch so I'll eat a smaller supper & give my body time to burn off lunch.
*I drink water or milk the rest of the day after my morning juice. I eat a lot of whole wheat & I won't eat after 7:00pm (unless I HAVE to cause I think I'm hungry or I start craving something, even then it's fruit & water.)
*SLEEP, sleep is very, very important. When you start an exercise routine your muscles NEED at least 7 hours of sleep to repair themselves. You must get on a regular sleep routine.
*Don't be discouraged because it doesn't happen overnight. I actaully started seeing results before I thought I would because I have such a low metabolism I thought it'd be 8-10 weeks before I lost any weight. It's better to set your goal longer and acheive it before that time than too soon and miss your goal all together.
*Don't get discouraged if people don't notice immediately, sometimes they're afraid to say anything or maybe they just really don't notice.
*After 2-3 weeks of healthier eating your metabolism will actually pick up some, that's a real nice suprise.
*Try to exercise BEFORE you eat. If not your body will slow down trying to digest the food & you won't have the energy to exercise, that'll discourage you even more.

This is pretty much what I've done so far and so far it's working...and believe it or not it's not been hard at all. I hope these tips help...!! :D

That is wonderful! I bet you are finding that you have more energy and feel better too. That is the way to do it. You may think it comes off slowly, but the more slowly it comes off, the more likely it is that it will stay off. I am so happy for you!

Much more energy plus I've been sleeping better (unless I work out later at night - then I have so much energy after I can't go to bed until 2-3am). It is coming off slowly and that's a bit discouraging but the worst is that hubby's seeing more and better results than me. We just keep telling ourselves that he has a higher metabolism plus he moves at work by walking, lifting etc (he's a mason) and I have to set behind a desk all day. Some results, all be it slow, are better than none!! Thanks for the encouragement - I need all I can get!!

That is just how it is for men. My husband always sees quicker results than me when we start eating better. Except this time, I have seen much quicker results because I think he has taken back to drinking sugary cokes..... But don't you worry, it is just how we women are built, and it WILL come off if you keep on the right track. You are already doing excellent. I even showed my hubby yesterday how big my pants were on me, and he still didn't act impressed. You can't compare to him because he does have a faster metabolism, and guys tend to hold more in their guts whereas women tend to hold more in their hips, butt and thighs. so concentrate on your progress and that is all that matters. It may help you to keep a log. Measure your hips, thighs, butt, waist, arms, and chest with a measuring tape. Write it down with the date. Measure them all again in two weeks. Write it down again. Maybe even write your weight down with it. A log like that will really help you see what kind of results you are getting. If you can see in inches how much you are losing versus pounds, you will see how much progress 7 pounds actually is. You are doing great. :D

Awww - I hate that, can't you go to the karate class instead? I bet that would be fun too (unless it's an advanced class only that is :) ). I've thought about starting karate myself (I know an instructor) but right now we don't have the money for it. You know, you don't have to go to a gym to exercise, you can do it in the privacy and comfort of your own home if you want to. Didn't you say you had some exercise tapes?? Get those out and do them instead of watching tv or reading a book! Save the book and tv before bed. You know, you'll only go home and watch tv or read a book if you let yourself... :) . It'll be sooooo super hard to get motivated to do that but once you have and it's all over you'll feel SOOO much better!!

I did my exersize dvd, well tried to. Shadow keep barking and jumping up at me. So I put her in the kitchen, then she was barking REALLY loud, cos she must have thought she'd done something wrong, so I let her back in, and she kept jumping up, barking, whining, getting in the way. And I got SOOOOOO annoyed and turned it off. I did half hour, and didnt even manage to do the cool down. God, shadow annoyed me soooooo much. But then I realised I was being an idiot, and unfair, of course she's gona bark and whine, and jump up, cos she hasnt got clue what Im doin! Then I got really mad at myself, for being mad at her.......not a good night all in all.

I think the best 'diet' is to eat healthy food and do a little exercise (even if it is a walk to work and back). I think people punish themselves too much on diets and that is why they fail. A little of what you fancy doesn't hurt!!

I have only ever been on one diet, and that was Weight Watchers (eek!). It worked really well for me. I ate what I wanted, enjoyed what I ate and felt fantastic! I lost over a stone!

Never been one for dieting (i love food!), and eventually put the weight back on and some. But! I lost it all naturally over a period of time, no dieting, just stopped being greedy ;)

Since I have lived with my boyfriend though, I have to admit I have put on a few pounds, so, when a friend said she was going to try Weight Watchers, I said I'd go with her! Start tuesday.. Fun eh...! I have to admit, I'm looking forward to it! That can't be right! ;)

Anyways, enuff of my super long post!

Brady did that to me when I would work out, just keep trying it for short periods of time and Shadow will get used to it. Sometimes I will give him a bone so he will be more bothered with that than with what I am doing.

First of all, it sounds like you are at a great weight!

I don't exercise, except what I get while I am working (I run a daycare, so I spend lots of time pushing swings etc)--but what I find really helps me drop a couple of pounds when needed is cutting out nighttime snacks. I tend to get hungry around 10 or so, and I went for a while where I was eating at that time--cutting out that snack really made a difference for me :) If I am really hungry in the evening, I try to have something a bit lower calorie--rather than that yummy bowl of Sugary cereal, I try some crackers or something. I really missed that snack for about the first week, and now I don't even find myself wanting one.

I am not a big fan of *diets* per se--just everything in moderation :)

That's made a difference for me too. I used to snack at night, but now I just eat my dinner in the evening and that's it. That helped me lose a couple pounds, and I was able to start eating breakfast in the morning.

Another thing that helps too is instead of having 3 big meals every day, break it up and have several small snacks (HEALTHY snacks) throughout the day.

I Generally Ydont Eat Just 3 Meals A Day, I Get Bored With Eating A Big Meal. So I Usually Snack Throughout The Day, Not Always On Healthy Things Thou. I Am Gona Try And Stop Eating Late At Night, Definately! Its Hard Thou, Cos Lee Is Always Home Late, So Im Cooking Late For Him, And Then Im Tempted By What Ever Im Cooking Him. So Ill End Up Having Two Suppers, One When I Finish Work, And One When He Finishes Work!

Oh ya another thing that helps too is drinking lots of water especially if you add a sice of lemon to the water. Now drinking lemon water isn't some magical formula that will make you lose weight but it does something along the lines of encouraging the body to burn fat faster or summat. I forget exactly how it works, a paramedic on my soccer team tried explaining it to me but I got confused and don't remember it exactly.
