So, I had a trial shift at a dog daycare recently, and they used a citronella bark collar on a dog that wouldn't stay quiet. Is this a common practice is daycares?

I've decided not to take the position due to other things, but just curious if I should expect to see them used during future job trials.

Doesn't happen here. No collars at all actually, we have paper(ish) ID bands, but nothing that could get caught and not break.

Was this on a dog while he was playing with other dogs? I feel like bark collars on dogs while they are interacting with other dogs is a terrible idea, it's stressful enough meeting a bajillion dogs they don't know, let's make them scared to communicate too!

NO!!!

Is the owner aware of this? I would be beyond livid if I found out that was done without my knowledge. I can see it being ok if the owner brought it in or gave an ok. But I've never seen one used in day care.

Each day care I've worked in has used squirt bottles (water) to quiet dogs. Any who were really really unbearable we told the owner they weren't a good candidate for day care...I think only once did the person continue to bring the dog.

We also used those wall plug ins with the calming scent stuff.

The dog was left unsupervised IN the group of dogs with the citronella collar on. I about died. All the dogs had collars on, which I was also surprised about.

The owner of the dog was one of the staff. She put the collar on her dog.

I'm glad I followed my gut and did not go through with the offer.

We always kept everyone's collars on at day care (to break up any fights easily/safely. Dogs had to pass a collar grab in temperament test to be allowed in.

A group of dogs at this day care were left unsupervised?!?!? Forget the collar, I'd be horrified at that alone. I'm wondering if I am misunderstanding your post about that it's so crazy to me.

Yes, they were/are left unsupervised a few times while I was there for more than 15 minutes. I think it's a staffing issue, which is why I felt badly for turning down the job, but also why I turned down the job.

Not at the daycare I work at. Not at all. For safety reasons majority of the dogs in our daycare are collar-less. There's no way I would put any kind of bark collar, citronella collar or e-collar on a dog loose in a daycare around other dogs.

The last daycare I worked at though they would put e-collars on some of the dogs and if they started barking a lot or being rowdy they would stim them. Typically these were random dogs that had no introduction to an e-collar and with a higher stim setting. There's a reason I don't work there anymore.
