Dalmatian sightings, anyone?

Random thought occurred to me earlier today. I remember back in the early-mid 90s when seemingly everyone had dalmatians. There were at least three people on our block alone that owned dals. For awhile, the breed seemed to be nearly as common as labs and goldens.

Now? It suddenly occurred to me that I haven't seen a dal in years. Not walking in the street, not in the shelter, and not even mentioned for sale in newspaper ads.

Anybody else notice this? Or is it just my part of the world? I don't think it's a bad thing for the breed, I'm just curious.

I haven't seen one since back in the 90s...

Actually I take it back. The last time I saw one was a super friendly one at the shelter when I got Yoshi. I almost got her but she was either an adult or a senior and in pretty bad shape and just wasn't right for my situation. :(

I think they are some of the cutest puppies ever though and would love to see another one again.

I see Dals on a fairly regular basis, both pets and show/performance dogs (see quite a few at the CPE trials here). I've liked a lot of the ones I have been around, can't recall meeting any truly nasty ones.

My cousin owns a pair and there are a couple I see walking about here but they are not popular by any means. The ones I have seen are however awful examples of the breed, they are all structural nightmares. I would love to meet a healthy beautiful dal, I really admire the breed.

I saw one at a dog show this past spring, and I was dogsitting a supposed dal mix (to me she looks pointer). We used to have 2 older ones that came to the clinic, but they've both died in the last few years.

I know two people who have dalmatian SDs, but I have never actually met them.

I see an elderly one occasionally at the dog park we frequent. Other than that my sighting have been pretty much restricted to dog shows.

I don't think I've ever seen a purebred Dalmatian. I've seen a few mixes though. Actual mixes, not just "hey, that dog is spotted so it must be part Dalmatian" mixes.

I haven't seen one in years at the shelter. We had like 2 in all of my time there. I don't see people having them around here either.

I've only ever seen one in person, at the dog park once. Otherwise I don't see them or hear anything about them. Other than, yes, everyone that has a dog with spots assumes it must have dal in there somewhere.

I've seen them around but not very often. They have an undeserved bad reputation, I've found. I met one bad one, but she was epileptic, and those meds really mess with temperament. The others I've met were good.

My ex-best friend has one (who I've posted pictures of.. lovely liver spotted thing)

There aren't any others in our town now. There used to be about 8 of them in one house... but they're long gone (owners AND dogs)

There aren't many at shows around here, either.

I don't see them often at all. Maybe one or two yearly. They're not even very common at dog shows around here that I've noticed. I absolutely love the breed though and stare in awe everytime I see one. I'm glad that their popularity has declined, for their sake. I hate when breeds (especially those I like) get too popular.

Slight derail here but I thought I would ask. Do dalmation mixes have the same spotting pattern? Do they have spots at all?

I am curious because I have no idea what causes the distinctive spotted coat on Dals. But I am assuming it's recessive since it seems to be isolated to one breed.
