Raw meals always interest me. Whenever I see meals laid out it seems like SO much food for a dogs size. Is this their meal for the entire day? Or do they get this twice?

I would probably give raw a try if I had the space. Hugo has gotten the odd raw drumstick or little liver chunk and he LOVES it so I'm sure he'd be all for it. And he loves raw eggs.

Most of these are Em's meals - she does get a lot of food for her size. For the most part, these are all a day's worth of calories, though I do occasionally split into two meals.

Below, we got a whole road kill deer that had been quartered up for us already.

I love seeing raw meals. Venice's were usually boring when I fed raw. I couldn't afford to feed all that much variety - because of prices here I had to buy in bulk from restaurant wholesalers. So when you are buying like 60lbs of something at a time, there isn't much room (freezer space wise or wallet wise) to get several cases of different things.

I know you've mentioned you feed raw for (basically) free. What are your sources? There's a local guy here who sells 40lb bags of ground (in 1lb blocks) for $13 but for things like bones and organs I have to go to a wholesaler which is cheaper than grocery stores but still like $2/lb. And I can't get human-non-edibles like tendons, feet or tripe.

No no, I'm all for raw talk! I post on facebook and Craigslist asking for freebies. I get all of my boneless that way, and usually most of my bone in as well. I occasionally buy "fun" things, but not often. I also made connections with a couple of butchers and processors - usually let me search through their render bins for anything from free to twenty cents a pound. The only thing I pay for with any regularity is organs - and even then, about 2/3s are free. I get a lot of liver, but usually not a lot of kidney, spleen or pancreas. I spend maybe $3-4 monthly on organs, and that's it for "necessities".


If you have a good bit of freezer space and don't mind processing yourself, most areas have a roadkill call list for larger prey animals like deer or elk. Check it out!

I am *so* not knocking raw feeding at all, but I find it highly amusing that some people are so offended by certain kibbles because "they contain by-products!" and "don't you know they use roadkill in dog food?!" which is essentially exactly what you're doing feeding raw. I love it.

Also, I'm pretty sure your dogs eat better than me and I am jealous.

Look like the meals around here! I rarely feed tripe but bought some with a cat food order last month, omg I forgot how nasty that stinks. I can't believe they eat it.

Nice on the roadkill deer. I always seem to see them a day too late, that or the birds around here are just super quick because I see dead deer on the side several times per week but never in great shape on the days I could grab one. I did get a small buck for opener last weekend for the dogs, quartered it and threw it in the freezer. Need to freezer rearrange so I can stuff a couple cheap turkeys in soon.

blackrose - I'm always amused when I hop on raw feeding groups and see that people toss meat a day past the expiration date or something to that effect. So silly and wasteful.

GP - I don't feed tripe often either. A friend of mine owns a pet store and had trouble moving it, so I got 4lbs or so for free... the smell doesn't bother me, thankfully! I definitely don't think of it as some special "superfood" like a lot of the community, but I also don't subscribe to the insane amount of supplements I see going on (coconut oil, golden paste, black pepper, kefir, etc). If your dog has more supplements than meat in it's bowl... I think you might be doing raw wrong.

Just jumping on to say I love this thread. Since I moved to SoCal and my dog freezer died, we've been doing partial raw, mostly ground or weird parts from the Mexican grocery. You've inspired me to start looking for more affordable sources and buy a new freezer so our meals start looking like this again!

I do raw with our Ibizan Hound sometimes. Mainly when I need to pack weight on him for a show or to put weight back on him after I have had a bitch in season. (he will stop eating for 4-5 days). He is not a great eater sometimes but he loves raw. It was just expensive.

I mainly just did chicken and fish. I have no idea why but I had it in my head that pork raw was not that great for them. I suppose it is fine reading this.

I also enjoy the amount you can feed. With tiny dogs its hard to give them that variety when one small chicken back would be a day's meal.

I do miss feeding raw Dekka and Schen get the occasional raw meal.

Raw domestic pork is fine. Trichinosis is only a concern in wild boar from my understanding, and even then only really overseas. I've fed wild boar from the U.S. without issue.

Zelda gets small meals as she packs on weight just looking at food - I know what a pain it is.
