I didn't mean that there was anything WRONG with these dogs. all dogs are beautiful in their own way to diffrent people. I just was commenting on how different they looked to me with a tail
To be honest, I think that the tailed boxer and tailed rottie looked great. They a bit lopsided to me without tails, probably because I'm used to dogs with tails. It's not that I don't like them without tails, I just prefer the "tailed" look.....

Cropping and docking

I have a 9 week old boxer whose tail was not docked and whose ears are natural. I considered getting his tail docked, because to me it just looks better, and as someone mentioned in an earlier post people don't believe they're purebred if tailed and not cropped. I had no plans to crop his ears, though when I was showing boxers 30 years ago, I did crop, it was the breed standard. I've read many posts, and talked to my vet, since he wasn't docked at just a few days old, I'm told now it is more like an amputation. I've pretty much changed my mind about having his tail done. Especially since I am just considering it on a cosmetic level, I won't be showing this little one, he's a rescue and though purebred, he's unregistered.
Everyone has their own feelings about this and I know mine have wavered and changed recently. You must do what you feel is right for your dog and you.

Well, we have solved the issue of a docking ban here. We dock puppies illegally. The kennel I am getting my GSP from docks the pups at 3 days regardless of the ban. They have a vet that does it because he is sick of treating damaged tails.
I will pay the fine if it gets questioned. I don't care. But seriously, who is going to stop me and be able to PROVE beyond a reasonable doubt that the dog was not injured and had to have an amputation?

If you've had to deal with "happy tail" for 6 years you'd be docking. It depends. Hopefully your boxer will have no problem. I wouldn't do it just for looks on a older pup. It's a horrible healing process. Ear docking - I'm up in the air. I do like the look of a show crop, hate working crop, and even after working for vets, don't like the healing process.
IMHO if docking tails is illegal then clipping dew claws should be illegal. Same pain. But better then ripped dewclaws later.

Jazz had no dicomfort with posting. She healed well and used to fall asleep on the grooming table while we changed her posts.

We were also sent home with pain meds and anit inflamitories. The only tome she was ever in pain was when she got to rough with Emma and Emma bit her ear.

I also watched her get docked. The whole litter screamed when they were taken from mom, didnt scream any louder when they were docked and were quiet and content when they went back to mom.

I guess i never understood what was behind docking except for looks. i did not know all the tail problems that could happen or that were associated with tailed dogs. I do not know who else may have done it besides me, so i can only speak for my self and apologize if i sounded to anyone like i would turn on people in an instant. Like I said, i did not know all the things that where associated with it and spoke out of arrogance. I do believe people have the right to their own opinions and there feelings and beliefs. I again apologize for anyone that I offended. I also know that i did not read all the posts but felt that i needed to apologize for the way i sounded. Also how do dogs hurt there tails? i have never known that to happen.

Someone in your town who reads this forum? Just a thought. Be careful what you put out on the internet.
I wouldn't worry about it, South Africa is a pretty darn big place with slightly more on it's plate to worry about. ;)

i don't know how you get "same pain" out of removing toenails vs cutting the spinal cord (though i'd just as soon leave attached dewclaws as well). seriously. cutting off a tail is cutting a huge bunch of nerves. and we do it without thought. how does that make sense at all? to prevent a possible injury we cause injury across the board?

why worry about happy tail in boxers when pit bulls all have their tails, their tails are much the same size and shape, the dogs are much the same size and shape?

IT is hard to understand when you have worked with field dogs and have gone to field trials for more than a decade plus have taken my dogs to the woods on a weekly basis without ever having a tail injury. But abscense of proof is not proof of abscense (sp?) so I am not going to say it doesn't happen. The only tail injuries I ever saw where when someone was rough housing with their dog and knocked the dog back in a way he would never do on his own, or the wagging of a tail in a chain link run that is narrow.

I have seperated my share of fights and have a hard time seeing someone being attacked grabbing ahold of a tail..especially when wearing the teeth on the other end..maybe someone else runs up and grabs the tail? Grabbing an ear? Maybe. Usually your pounding on them to make them let go..i think it would be wiser to go for an eye than an ear if i was being attacked.

I would still love to see the statistics of injuries in a country (that doesnt' have the trees of Africa...i can't remember how to spell anything today) so that we could compare. I keep looking on line but I haven't found anything yet.

I am glad this thread has been able to be bounced back and forth and so many people have put in their opinions. THat is what it is suppose to be all about.
