LAST WEEKEND BEFORE POUND. RARE FILA BRAS. DOG!!

I know I don't post often, but I lurk pretty much everyday. I am fascinated with the Fila's and Fila owners on this board. As some of you know I have a rescued pembroke Corgi and a Manchester terrier. They are my first smaller dogs and I'm having a blast with them. I am not confident that I could handle a Fila at this point in my life, but feel terrible for this 3 yr old spayed female that seems to desperately need a home. My husband and I work full time and also have a hay farm that we work, but don't live at yet. I have no children and rarely have visitors at the house. The farm would provide ample room for exercise and is fairly private. Still, I don't think I have the proper time to devote to a dog like this. I am also extremely concerned for Zippy and Calli's safety--not sure how Fila's deal with smaller dogs. Does anyone have any suggestions or know anyone who can help this girl?

First off, Filas are typically very good with smaller dogs. Even when the smaller dogs annoy them, Filas tend to just ignore or "air snap."

I wonder why they're in such a hurry to dump their dog and why they aren't contacting a Fila or Mastiff rescue?

I don't need to see these things *sigh*

*Sigh*why do so many people think Filas are throw away dogs? Poor baby she just needs someone to love and cherish her I bet.

Usually small dogs run all over Filas. LOL

Apparently this dog is not kid friendly. So, I am guessing it has not been fully socialized around kids and strangers. Just keep that in mind before you invite company over.

Also, it may take a few days for her to fully accept you, going straight from her home to yours.

The key to acclimating a Fila is to always have THEM come into YOUR space whenever possible. You take your place in the room before they come in. And take everything slowly and calmly, hands empty.

That is so very TRUE!

And the second most important thing...Animal Crackers, if you can't get them, get sugar cookies. Filas have a big sweet tooth. :D

LOL, Linda, yes the Fila sweet-tooth!

Just caught the scene in The Prisoner of Azkaban where Harry Potter is introduced to the Hippogriff . . . very Fila-esque . . . right down to the way you feel when these wonderful beasts accept you. :)

I just don't think I have the confidence or proper time for this much dog and I'm afraid of getting into a situation I can not handle (not to mention my husband would probably divorce me LOL!) Is there a rescue I could contact that anyone knows of? Off to do some research.....

I emailed the owner to find out why he was giving her away.

this is what he had to say...

She is too hyper and too jumpy for the daughter who is 6 months old. She is in amazing health and really just needs someone with experience in the breed to readjust her to a new home and give a space to run. I gues over hyperactivity would be the best description.

So sad...:( I am sure she could be easily taught how to act around children and in the house.

I gave fila rescue info to the owner, and asked him to contact them instead of taking her to the regular pound.

I also told him we could possibly offer some great advice on here to help him train her, but I don't know...

Thanks filarotten! Its great that someone familiar with the breed has reached out to this person. Keeping fingers crossed that something good happens for this dog.
