A hole in the bottom of the sea.
the right thing would be to hold up your end of the bargain with the shelter and neuter the dog. period. the end.
Agreed.

IMO, it would be completely irresponsible NOT to neuter this dog. First of all, it seems required by shelter. Second of all, there are *way* too many pits that don't have homes as it is, and this dog has just added more to the population. In our area there are *young* pit bull puppies being put down in shelters because nobody will take them. Something like 1 in 400 pits finds a good home. IMHO, the possible risks of altering are *far* outweighed by then benefits in this situation.

As far as changing personality--I altered my male at a year old, and his personality is no different. In fact, the only difference is that he does not hump every female dogs he meets.

Yup. I tried calling this one out LOONG ago, but apparently we were being unfairly cruel.
I agree this person has turned out to be what you all thought.... However I stand by the fact you have to let them hang themselves first.... Because the next one may not be....

Their true colors will show through, and if they are willing to take our advice then it's a good idea not to run them off right away....

In the early 80's we adopted a 5 1/2 mth old dog from the RSPCA. We were told to bring him back in 2 weeks to have him neutered, which we did. Now-a-days because of ppl not bringing their pets back for spay/neutering the shelters s/n 7 week old puppies which is way too young to be done.

BigDog's true colours showed through a long time before this. Refusing to take ANY of the good advice offered, and continually posting questionable and potentially dangerous situations? And we were supposed to sit there and make nice?

I'm a reasonable person. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. It's not my fault I (and other people) realized there was something wrong with this before others caught on.

But alas. I don't want to argue with you about this and perpetuate the negativity.

Okay, I have given it some thought (and slept on it).

Jaws gets neutered. Thanx for the advice.
Good for Jaws. But it's too late. The damage has been done.

I know I can speak for myself and many others when I say that none of us will let this be until all those rescue dogs are out of your hands.

Yes.. but their true colour showed by their 3rd-4th thread. So when do we agree that their true colour are showing? When you can see it? When there is a consensus?

How obvious does it need to be?

I agree with not running a newbie off. I agree with being nice to everyone at the beginning (that IS how you catch a troll.. ;) But how much bs do we need to put up with before its ok to call a troll a troll? How long do we have to enable someone who is harming dogs before it becomes PC to speak out?

These are honest questions... I would love to hear others opinions on them.

I think it depends, really and truly on the situation, and that will vary, vague maybe but that is how I see it... I also need to clarify, because many seem to think I (and others) expect everyone to be *nice* and that is not my intention.... Call a spade a spade, many here do it very well... but there is a far and wide gap between that and getting down in the mud nasty....

Anyhow, I do not want this to get all circular again, just wanted to clarify that I myself am not trying to perpetuate negatives, and never wanted that. I too had honest concerns, maybe I am too trusting:dunno:, I have just been on the receiving end of people convinced I was a Troll and know the sting so I myself tend to give more rope...

Ohh I have been on the recieving end too :) There is one forum I am on where I am an
'evil despicable breeder' according to many of the regulars. I get nasty harsh posts and PMs all the time there. (there are loads of people who think there should be no breeding until all the shelters are empty type thing)

These are questions that I think need to be addressed. Not in a negative way. If I am calling a spade a spade too early.. what is to stop this mess from happening again? How do we avoid this problem with out being nicey nice until the troll is basically laughing and making fun of us?

high drive working line GSD's my ass.

i bet you've never worked or titled a GSD ever, i bet you've never health tested a single dog - i bet all you've done is bought dogs (maybe even already titled - some euro breeders leftovers that couldn't cut it in their own country) and bred the hell out of them.

this is all ridiculous.

Wow . . . I think I get why the shelters around here will never physically sign over a dog to an adopter before it's neutered.

Says goodbye to chazhound....done with forums
I only read the Original Post so others may have already said something like this

I think the contract spay/neuter is a good thing most of the time.

Saying that.....my dog was actually much younger than the shelter thought and she was just barely 5 months old when she had to be spayed. (They thought she was older but the vet confirmed she was much younger) So I had an issue with that but we did it anyway because we signed the contract. I don't like the idea of spaying so early.

Also I know of someone with a Frenchie that they lost because they found out the dog most likely wouldn't survive the neuter. The shelter demanded the dog back because he would not have him neutered......so he had it done but he indeed didn't make it through surgery.

I think there should be exceptions. In those cases.

BUt for the most part I think its necissary

We were given the option to have our vet do the spay or have the low cost shelter vet do it......we were going to have the shelter do it but we had had this dog since she was 10-11 weeks old. And the shelter was well....cut them open, sew them up, next dog.....and could not resesutate if something happened.

I left and took her to my vet

sadly I see their reasoning too.

I dont agree with pediatric spay/neuter but more and more I understand why shelters feel compelled to do it.

It would be nice for shelters to be open to other spay/neuter alternatives aside from just surgical, in a case where a vet deemed the surgery too risky. There are chemical neuters that make a dog sterile without physically removing their organs.

That's pretty bad. I agree that if the owner took the dog to a vet with the intent to neuter and the vet deemed it unsafe for that dog, then the shelter should be able to make an exception, for the well-being of the dog.

I'm not sure if anyone here was really getting the point of the conversation. One is that there were no application forms, adoption forms, no speuter contracts, not even a "just call us and let us know how the dog is doing." Besides the website, there is not even an implication that the animals should be speutered.

Just a basic information contact information sheet so the shelter has a record of where the dogs went to. The shelter adopts to out of county, out of state, and apparently out of the country. There is not any way that the shelter can keep tabs on all those dogs.

You guys gotta realize that the shelter seems to be operating on bare necessities. There is only one AC officer, and he and his wife operate the shelter on their own property, and are assisted by other volunteers. The animals appear well cared for, they all have indoor/outdoor kennels--padlocked and secure-- and none of them appear to be underfed or wormy or sickly, but I am sure that the county does not have the extra money to fund more than what it already does.

The shelter people are doing the absolute best job that they can do under the circumstances. Likely, the shelter does not have the funding to vaccinate or speuter the dogs before they leave, the funding to purchase forms, the funding to pay someone to assist processing the forms, and maybe not enough room to store all of the records and forms.

Chances are that if I send a copy of the neuter certificate to the shelter, the people are likely to have time to look at it a few months from now, and it will sit in a pile of papers that eventually get tossed into the trash--because it is not a necessary required record of the county's.

Now, when I get Jaws neutered, will Chazboard all agree that I have become the biggest person here?

BUT...you did know. I understand that some people might not have found out about the mandatory spay/neuter clause, but you did--and pretending you didn't and trying to justify your actions is just immature at best.

You took that dog knowing you were supposed to neuter him. Be the bigger person here, and go get your dogs fixed. Then tell the shelter they should add the clause to their adoption forms, to make their policies consistent :) They'll probably appreciate the advice.

It sounds then like maybe you could help them out, instead of nitpick the loopholes in their process? If they are as well meaning and financially strapped as you say they are, rally the troops for volunteering, make copies of adoption contracts for them at kinkos, or find another way to help. You fostering/adopting dogs is helpful, but only if you nip the "too many puppies" problem in the bud while you have a chance. I get that the shelter isn't requiring you to spay the pups, but you've been given several really good ideas for how to get them spayed (at little to no cost to you!). Having all the dogs fixed would be a wonderful gift to the people running the shelter. It's a promise to them that there won't be another pregnant pittie coming to them in 6 months.

I really do think you mean well...but the posts you're making aren't spreading the right messages.

well, I suppose that I am not thinking in the same channel as the other posters. Probably a result of my paralegal education and a bored mind.

Actually, a much better solution would be for me to buy a new printer and make the forms myself. :)

Yes, that is why they want the people who are adopting them to AGREE to do it, and by taking him you AGREED to neuter him. Not all this talk about BREEDING a RESCUE PITBULL!
