Hello,

Fostering a chihuahua. He's wonderful, but a barker, and husband works nights so daytime barking needs to be kept to a minimum. Will definitely work on training but for those times I'm at work during the day and husband is sleeping...well, would a citronella collar be appropriate? Any luck with them or are they considered "unkind"?

Would appreciate any thoughts. He's extremely reactive and sensitive to sound, so a door opening, the house shifting, and he's yapping away.

I did a Google search for topics, and a different forum for chihuahuas seems to think it's too hard on their airways since they are small dogs. Any science behind that, do you think?

Thanks in advance

My only experience is second hand. A friend's BC is really noisy in her crate, so she tried a citronella collar. Her dog learned that the citronella supply is limited, so she would go into barking frenzies to empty it out, then go back to her normal vocalizations.

Thanks for the response Sparrow! Wow that's a pretty clever dog :)

I've used them with success while the collar is on. No problems and worth a shot IMO. They get collar smart though about when it is on and off.

One thing though, the collar will spray if another dog barks or if it hears a loud noise. If you drop something, it will spray. If it hears you cough, it will spray. I circumvented that by putting the strap that is the collar on backwards, so it was against the speaker..it could really only pick up the barking.
