At 6 weeks old, I thought I'd be keeping Poodles. They're 8 weeks now and its decided that I'll actually be keeping black collar boy (Atlas) instead. He'll be called Zeke :)
Adorable!

What made you change your mind? I'm always fascinated by how breeders place puppies or choose which one to keep.

I hate not knowing how much to feed puppies. Sawyer is 9.5 pounds and getting 1/2 - 3/4 cup three times a day. That just sounds like sooo much but he's active and lean and doesn't have diarrhea so I don't know? He doesn't generally get extra treats either, we just do training sessions with his meals.

I feed what I would feed an adult of that breed (based on the typical calories calculators) and it's worked for me. Hazel eats the same amount as Watson, about 2.5 cups per day.

Holy crap! I wonder if there's a size curve for this... I would never dream of feeding a 10 week old GSD 5 or 6 cups of food a day lol

Southpaw, I usually eye out puppy meals, but that seems pretty similar to what I tend to feed the medium breed sized puppies coming through here, until closer to 16 weeks and it starts increasing.

Oh yeah, Watson was eating more than 3 cups per day when he was a tiny thing, and he was always skinny as a rail. Hazel is at 2.5 cups and she's not even 20lbs. It's weird to feed them the same amount considering he's 2.5 times bigger than her.

Possibly! The typical calorie calculators usually recommend a similar amount of calories for a puppy who will grow up to be 40lbs and an adult who is 40lbs And I've found it to work for both of mine so far. It might be totally different for large breeds though. I've talked to others who feed by the same method and it has worked for them too.

Cool. I dont remember how I did it with Juno but I know for a while she wasn't that into food so I pretty much let her eat as much as she wanted.

I field this question a lot at work from new puppy owners and I'm generally just kinda like well... you won't really over feed in the sense that they'll get obese lol but I never have solid answers. And then as long as their puppy feels good I say you're doing it right! :p

I do the whole "feed what the adult size would eat" thing, too. Abrams as an 11 pound pup at 4 cups daily. Now he's 73 pounds and eats 4 cups daily. (Well. 3.5 cups, because with treats and things he was getting a bit too much padding for my liking.)

Chloe, at 45 pounds full grown, at anywhere from 1-2 cups a day as a pup. She maintains her adult weight at just over a cup a day.

I never really thought about it but turns out I do the same thing LOL. Payton and Georgie both got the same as puppies as they get now. I played with Payton's amount a lot because he was (still is) so skinny and had poo troubles but it has basically been 1/3rd cup twice a day since he was super young. Auggie went down at around a year because I started feeding far better food and he got fat but he has stayed basically the same from young competing adult to retired oldie. Sometimes the scoop gets a bit fuller and sometimes it's scant but 1/4 cup twice a day for many many years...

Fat puppies make me super sad, moreso than fat adults. So like sass I just keep an eye on it and adjust as needed. With P of ourse I tried going up to no avail. Georgie we went down from what she was getting at the breeder (she was a chunk when we got her, she was stealing food there) and then went down more when she was a little older because I prefer them a bit leaner for working and wanted just a hair more off her. She has always gained weight easily so we have to watch her during peak training seasons when she is getting lots of cookies. :p

I give Ollie (now a whopping 5.4 lbs) 1 whole cup a day at the moment. He eats about half in the morning and the rest at night, though now that he's finishing off the bowl at night I'll up him a little bit.

In other news, we are currently sucking at housebreaking and not pottying in the crate.

I feel your pain!!

How old is he? Hazel is 17 weeks and is finally down to only ~1 accident per week, but we're still taking her out 2-3 times per hour if she's awake and she pees every time. When she was younger she was having accidents constantly and peeing in her crate most days.

10 weeksish. I'm thinking of pad training him as well for when he can't hold it. He comes to work with me so I am able to let him out every couple of hours.

Oh yeah, Hazel was awful at 10 weeks. She was getting up twice every night, going out every 10 minutes (and still having like 4 accidents every evening) and peeing in her crate most afternoons (not during the morning shift though). It was brutal. Good luck! Hopefully his little bladder grows quickly.

He used the puppy pad in my bedroom three times today, got right off the bed (we were playing, watching tv and snuggling) or from bugging the other dogs and used it. :hail:

Charlie is getting a little tired of him, even though she has the go ahead to put small holes in him. He LOVES her tail and attacking her neck floof... she's too polite for her own good and at this point just hides from him. Thankfully the other boys are finally playing with him now too, it's adorable watching him playing with Stryder, who I think is trying to get down to his level to play but squishes him every time, or he's trying to hump him and doesn't know how, all while Ollie is hanging from his beard.

Throwing around name ideas, it's either one name and we're done, or I'm with everything else needs at least 6 names to try out before I decide on one.

I am getting too big and handsome.

He hasn't had an accident all week and has been going to the door every time. It's amazing how much easier my life is as a result.

I'm so impressed with how good he is in class too. Just has laser focus. You can tell when we're at the tail end of the hour because he starts to space out a little, but for the vast majority of class he's awesome. Even when the other puppies are throwing tantrums or if they actually approach/sniff him. There's plenty of time for me to screw him up lol but I feel like he has such a solid foundation.

The only perplexing thing about him is that, as much as he loves to play and tug, I am pretty certain he is the only puppy in class that won't play with a toy during class. He'll still tug on my arms if I initiate it :)rolleyes:) but otherwise food drive trumps everything right now and he doesn't acknowledge his toy during class.

Deacon hasn't had an accident in house or in his crate for a week. He's also been pretty reliable about going to the door. We've had our 2nd full grooming, and my back gave out before Deacon did, also, I quicked his nail which he was pretty immune to. More concerned with eating the cornstarch and gauze than worrying about the blood everywhere.

Some quick pics:
