Oh good god.

Why can't they just make a movie about MUTTS? I'd like to see some black, scruffy mutts... or ones of very common coloring... in a shelter situation.. with the moral of the story "GO ADOPT A DOG!" That would be nice.

This link works w/o quick time player, btw. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoNDp03udhg

ETA: entire trailer loaded. It looks unbearably stupid.

I have to agree, they should really make a fantastic movie with some good mutts in there. One that was adopted from a shelter in the movie. Then people might do the right thing.

Anyone remember.. 99 Deeds? Or something? TV show on Disney? Or maybe Nick? Anyway, the star dog on that was actually in real life from a shelter, and they promoted it a lot that the dog was a rescue.

I hate these dog movies though, simply because all these people go "how cute!" and rush out to buy them. Even that Winn Dixie movie? I read people saying "I want a winn dixie where can I buy one" *sigh*

Okay, you know what I wish? If they ARE going to promote a breed that they would instead use GOOD EXAMPLES OF THE BREED. *head + wall*

THEN maybe people would sit and think "WAIT! Those dogs don't look like the one in the movie.." it might jar some actual thought into some peoples' heads about where they are getting their dogs from.

Then again.. maybe not.

Ack! A friend showed me this yesterday. It makes me sick. I mean the lead dog doesn't even look like a Chihuahua. It looks like a doxie mix, although it's probably a puppymill or byb dog. Something very badly bred. Actually even the CGC Chis didn't look like Chihuahuas. That just makes things worse, in my opinion. Not only will there be a rush for Chihuahuas (which will be dumped soon after) but it will be a rush for very VERY badly bred Chis that look nothing like the breed is suppose to. :(
Very very sad.

The dog in Zeus and Roxanne is a Portuguese Podengo, not a mutt. ;) (they actually used siblings)

They use podengos often to portray 'mutt' type dogs. As well as the obvious Picardy used in Winn Dixie. It's not too bad because no one realizes these dogs are purebreds.

They use them because most dogs in movies are played by multiple dogs. It's hard to find multiple mutts that look alike enough to use in a movie as the same animal.

Winn Dixie used 4 Picardies.

Look on the bright side of things. Maybe little kids will see the movie and beg their parents for one, and the parents finally give in and go to a shelter and adopt a Chihuahua, or chi mix. (-:

whoops, had no idea. But now that I think about it, a lot of mutt-type dogs in movies do have that look about them, so who knows.

Though it would be nice if Disney put a message at the end advising people to be responsible about getting a dog and if they do get a dog to go to a shelter, I'm frankly not going to condemn a movie studio for making a movie about Chis. Even if they are funny looking Chis (they do have to pick from the canine actors available).

Its a movie. It looks kinda funny. I'll probably rent it.

Its terrible that every time there is a movie/TV show/ad campaign/dog show winner, people go out and buy the breed from mills. That's true. But I'm not going to blame the studio/company/dog show for that, unless they have in some way actively advocated puppy milling. They have a right to make movies, shows, events about dogs, and I like to watch such things and so does much of the country. Frankly, Disney can't be responsible for nitwits who want Chihuahuas . . . though a letter campaign asking for a note about responsiblity after the credits might be nice.

And they often do use rescue animals that have been saved by trainers. At least one of the stars of Snow Dogs was a rescue.

As for movies about mutts . . . there are a few out there . . . but clearly, the joke here is that the star is a Chihuahua . . . from what I can gather, that's the whole point.

I'd better hire a nanny and get ready to expand because every time something like this happens, sales of the breed explode and then the number of them winding up on deathrow jumps up and the more calls I get...

I'm sorry, when 90% of your movie is CGC and you can't even make a COMPUTER GRAPHIC look like the actual breed...that does not bode well for the rest of the movie. Even Toy Story, which used what is now dinosaur type technology, could at least make things look like they were supposed to.

Admittedly, I don't know much about what Chis are supposed to look like, because I have zero involvement with the breed . . . but frankly, they look like most CGI animals to me . . . not quite right, too cute, and well, a little like stuffed animals. (As a former computer animator, that's sort of annoying in its own right, but I'll let it stand). I have rarely seen any CGI animal that looks right except in VERY high budget films, which this obviously is not.

I said it looked kind of funny and cute . . . *good* is a whole other question. I just feel that movie studios should not NOT make movies for fear of people buying puppies . . . although I would like to see advertisements and credits that make note of responsible ownership . . . but frankly, I can't feel that I can hold Disney responsible for idiots who buy dogs they see in movies.

CGI animals never look right to me either. Most CGI creatures really don't unless like you've said, it's a really high budget film.
