We were supposed to leave for NY last week, My 26 year old POS car died again, and my mother fell down the stairs.. Turned out after I forced her to the ER her ankle was broken in 2 places she needed surgery and I'm now molly maid, so it's kinda good I didn't make it out of the province..

I still have a load of grooming stuff waiting for me in NY.. so we still plan to get there. We had no issue crossing last time in November. They wanted to see the bottle of wine I packed as a gift, and Cider's rabies certificate..

Seems reading on dogster load of people say the only kibble you can cross the border with has to be in a closed factory sealed bag and has to have made in the USA on it.. Seems if you claim you have no kibble they may search your car..

Umm we feed Orijen.. I like it's not made stateside, and it's patchy to get a hold of there depending.. so wtf am I supposed to do for dog food when we make it there hopefully maybe next month?

Has anyone heard this before now and I've been just living under a rock?

Well I know you can't order it from across the border. I would have thought they would let you take enough for your own dog. That's stupid. :(

It's probably to keep any foreign bugs from crossing the border.......or that's what they would say lol

I think it's because we have had cases of mad cow here. Border laws have really become strict about meat products since then. It's affected elk, deer and buffalo farmers too.

I remember crossing the border they didn't want any food's, they said to keep foreign bugs out. That's why I said bugs ;) lol

As a suggestion, can you start switching your food now to something sold in the US, that way when you're down there you can buy it there?

I don't think it would do too much harm if it's only for a little while. Assuming it's true that you can't take the food.

It's probably that too then! They even have issues with some skin creams and stuff when you travel internationally. It's really odd the machines they have to test for 'organic' material.

Cider does poorly on like 98% of food.. We've tried nearly everything decent on the market.. Doesn't matter how slowly we switch or what we switch to, it'll be instant liquid poop that will take a month on Orijen to clear up again..

I'm really ticked off, as I only planned on taking enough for a week.. I'd really like the stuff I sent to NY.. Rate I'm going I guess I'll be paying 10x more to ship it here so I don't have to cross..

What a fiasco that could have been at the border.

It's okay it's a good idea.. I know people that have been buying Orijen stateside.. So I'm not entirely sure how this policy works.. Just it's not sold as openly as here..

Guess I should call or email someone at customs and see if it's real.. since I don't take dogster as fact.. Though people claim they've had their food confiscated..

Definetly a good idea to call and make sure! If it's possible to find Orijen that will ship to the US?

So just call and see the actual rules for taking dog food across the border, if you can't just order some! :)

I know when a friend of ours went down to Mexico for the world dog show, she got there and they were seraching bags for opened dog food. She watched one couple having to deal with the guys, and they only gave them enough food for 1 feeding, and then they were going to have to get it once they crossed the boarder . She somehow got thru without them checking for dog food, but she said the couple were told it had to of not been open from the factory for it to pass into Mexico.

some online companies will ship orijen. One is k9cuisine.com. They charge over $8.00 to ship a 5 lb bag, but at least you'd have it there when you got there.

Ok, correct me if I am reading this wrong. You can't cross the border from Canada to NY with your pet's food, nor can you order food from across the border. And when you go to Mexico, they don't want you bringing any food there. In the meantime, millions of illegal aliens continue to cross our borders from Mexico with a wink and a nod, and nobody checks their pockets and knapsacks for bugs or "organic material"--much less for illegal drugs. So how many things can you find wrong with this picture?

I don't know how it is from CA to the USA... but when you fly in from abroad you can't bring aaaaanything. It's a real pain.
I remember a year back I was greedy and had my suitcase full of European cheese and sausages (they were vacuum packed). Of course they had guy walking along the belt with a dog... I was sweating bullets. And I feel horrible... but I was so thankful they "busted" this old sweet grammy standing next to me- she had a Grapefruit in her purse!

Yeah Tosca.. I would figure there are bigger deals than enough kibble to feed my dog for a week too..

Coming back into Canada last time they drilled me for 10 minutes on why i DIDN'T have alcohol or tobacco.. Only 50 pounds of dog food (which was no problem)..

Way to the states Cider's paperwork got scrutinized the lady was hardcore nasty, drilled me endlessly on how I knew my friend and why I'd go visit her.. And if I was importing alcohol tobacco and firearms..

I was already all ahhh about crossing cause it's stressful, but now kibble issues too. God..

No we aren't going anywhere near stores that sell Orijen.. Maybe we're going raw for a week, as that's what her dogs eat.. When we eventually get there..
