We were contacted a few days ago (saturday) by a friend who is a great dane breeder...We got Amira from her and we stayed in touch..So she contacted us and asked us if we can help her with a great dane puppy..
So, what's the story, right?

The pup comes from a litter of very beautiful show dogs...But the owners didn't take care of him like they supposed to. And I don't know why. This friend of mine I know her, she tells every future owner of her dogs how to take care of them, how to feed them...So, they knew everything, but they still didn't give him treatment (you know that, generally, large breeds when they are young they must follow a treatment so that they will grow up with strong bones and ligaments)..I don't know what happend.

So she asked us to take the pup in and give him the prescribed treatment and she comes once in a while to see him and give him some shots with calcium.
I'm so sad. He is such a smart boy and very good behaved for a pup of 4 months old.
The ex owners of the dog..just called her last week and told her that the pup is crippled and that she gave them a sick dog and they want their money back (I believe that if there wasn't money envolved, they wouldn't have contacted and given the dog back). And they told her this after 2 months after they got the dog. Now she is upset because she did gave them a perfectly healthy pup but they were so ignorante that the dog was left by himself, without proper caring...

He also had an operation on his front right paw, the elbow, it had a swelling. It appears at most of the large breeds because of the heavy body the elbows support when they are laying down. But the swelling disappears in time. It doesn't have to be operated on. So they took him to the vet and now he has a much bigger swelling...

And we discovered other bad things at the dog: he is a little skinny, he isn't well socialized, when we take him outside for his needs he doesn't want to stay longer and he wants back in the house quickly...I hope he recovers. He is so beautiful, really.

Here are some pictures

Here he is from the back, what do you think?

If he won't recover 100% he won't be a show dog...so someone will have to adopt him. And since he is staying with us for a while and he'll get used to us I guess I'll adopt him, yes :D

Ohh poor guy! He did grow to quickly, which is the owner's fault. I've seen those swellings before and they have generally come from joints that grew too fast and a fluid pocket developed.

I feel so bad for this handsome guy! It looks like he's been in a cage 24x7, the way his back legs are weakened and the swelling on his elbows. Poor guy. I bet with care and love he'll recover just fine. When I was a kid we adopted a Bassett Hound that someone had bought from a pet store. They took him back because the vet said he had permanent leg damage from being in a cage. It took a few months, but the best day was when I was running with him and he finally passed me and ran by. I knew he was better then.

He's a beautiful boy. You can see how sweet he is. It sounds like he's found his new mom who will love him so very much.

He's gorgeous, and poor little guy for not having proper care, the swelling looks horrible.
I don't really know giant breeds so what actually needs to be done with them to ensure their ligaments etc grow properly and they don't get those swellings?
He reminds me of a Great Dane thats comes to show training, who's the same colour. They can become amazing dogs, and this one is brilliant for showing, and it's sad this one misses out because of irresponsible people.
Good Luck, you're obviously the best thing for him.

if the breeder has reason to belive and the vet can back her up that the dog was fine before leaving her and that the damage has been done by the owners then as long as she has a contract and got a health cert on the dog before selling him the now ex owners wont have a leg to stand on in terms of getting their money back.
definatly looks like a case of too fast growth AND a puppy thats spent too much time in too small a crate.

looks like a sweet and lovely dane though, enjoy him.

The swelling on his elbow is called a "hygroma." It is very common in giant breeds that don't have a soft, super padded surface to lay on...the pressure on the joints from the weight causes the hygroma to develop. An extra padded bed now can help them go away along with not allowing him to lay on hard surfaces.

As far as the growth/bone abnormalities, have you contacted the Great Dane Lady? You may want to send her the pictures and I bet she could really help correct his problems. Just my thoughts anyway...

He's beautiful, good luck.

It looks like his back legs pull to the outside. Could that be another reason they gave the dog back? Or is he just standing that way in every picture? Are there any pics of him with his back legs straight while he's standing?

His eyes look a little strange. Is that pink/black portion supposed to be visible in the corner (not the droopy pic)?

He looks cute and a little skinny possibly.

did your breeder friend take any pics of him before he left to the ex-owners home, I'd be curious to see what he looked like before. You also mentioned something about if he doesn't get 100% better than he won't be able to show and will be up for adoption, was he originaly intended as a show prospect?
