I know there are a ton of good photographers hers so hopefully someone can help me out. Please know that I know very little about cameras.

Basically I'm looking for a decent zoom lens for my Nikon D3000.

I've been looking mostly on Amazon at Nikon lenses and reading the reviews given there. These two are what I'm liking most right now...
Nikon 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom Lens
Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S VR Nikkor Zoom Lens
They seem to have plenty of good ratings and few bad ones.

Does anybody know anything about these? The good? The bad? The ugly?
I'm more than willing to get a lens from a different manufacturer - Nikon is really all I know so it's what I've stuck with - so suggestions are more than welcome!

My spending limit is $600... though, as a student, I'd really like to not pay that much. I'm looking to find the best lens I can within my budget.

I have a similar Canon equivalent of the 70-300mm and I've been more than pleased with its quality, though I can't compare it to the 55-300mm.

Few pics I've taken with it:

The two paddleboard shots, I was sitting on a boat a good distance away.

I will say I wish my zoom lens went all the way down to 55m - my kit lens goes to 55m so since my zoom is 70-300mm I have quite a gap, which sometimes annoys me. I have a Canon tho, so no help on the specifics.

You might want to look at used - all my gear is used from Adorama and KEH and I've been very happy with everything, especially the price for the quality!
