Calling All Hairless Dog Owners

Particularly Xolo owners.

We have a new Xolo client, a female about a year or so old i believe. This dog originally came from a junkyard in Mexico and ended up at the Xolo rescue near us and a customer of ours got her (she also has a Crestie). The dog is doing well and is eating raw and gained some needed weight but...

She is COVERED, literally covered head to toes in blackheads and pimples.

We've started her on a detox for the time being and are looking into things but has anyone seen this? Like literally covered in blackheads even in between the toes.

Is there a special bath concoction that can be done by groomers or at home that will help? The poor thing must be in pain, blackheads and pimples are pretty painful sometimes.

Any suggestions i could pass on?

My friend and I just rescued a Crested with the same problem. Use iodine once a week with exfoliating shampoo on the face and let him soak for at least 3 minutes. Do 2 bathes in between iodine treatments woth exfoliating shampoo. Little MoMo has been clearing up quite nicely.

The raw should certainly help.

With Xolos, pimple break-outs are an immune response, so if there are fresh patches of pimples that means the dog is encountering strains of germs and things it's never seen before. You'll see it often in puppies as they get their shots. For break-outs like that, you can do a concoction of regular listerine and witch hazel, use a cotton ball to apply onto the skin.

For really bad blackheads, you can use any generic apricot exfoliating scrub. It's gross, but you can always gently squeeze them yourself if your hands are clean and the dog is freshly bathed.

The biggest thing to remember is to keep them moist after bathing. We use coconut oil and it works really well.

Once the skin is under control you should switch to a very mild cleanser. We use straight oatmeal, and Xochitl's breeder uses chickpea paste (we'd use that if we could find any locally). With the oatmeal it means Xdog gets to eat her "shampoo" during the session, making bath-time a whole lotta fun.

We're fortunate because, with the exception of a major neck acne phase as a puppy, we've been able to keep her skin looking pretty good. Even so, blackheads are still an issue as the Xolos have oil in their pores to protect the skin.

You should also consider joining the Xolo Yahoo board (just google it). That's how I learned most of my information and they've been a super valuable resource.

Foxywench just told me about a yogurt honey bath that works wonders. 1/2 cup yogurt mixed with a tablespoon of honey let it soak for at least 10 minutes and rinse with cold water. Do this once a week. I will be posting before and after photos of my rescue.

the yoghurt bath is absolutly wonderfull (and safe for consumption, its good inside and out lol)
i generally mix it up let it get to room temp (cause cold is just mean lol) slather jasper down with it once a week and he gets to lick the bowl clean while it sits.
rinse with cool water and follow up wit a good moisturizer, pure cocoa butter or coconut oil are best, but a little bit of olive oil, or aveno or other "natural mild" lotion are great.

yoghurt is a natural exfoliant, and honey is a natural antibacterial.

xolo skin is a little toughter than crestie skin, but the yoghurt mask should work just as well, listerine/witchazel is also great as an astringent.

I own chinese cresteds(sorry, not an xolo owner), and it is very common for them to get blackheads.

1) It is fine to "pop" the ones that aren't deep in the skin. But you should bathe the dog afterwards or rub alcohol on their skin to prevent the germs spreading.

2) A good way to get them out is to put baby oil on their skin, and use a paper towel to rub it off. This works best for the stomach area, as the skin is softer.

3) Also, when giving the dog a bath, get a wet wash rage and scrub the skin. You also can roll the blackheads out using the wash rage.

4) Use neosporin to help heal regular bumps.

5) Using witch hazel during a bath is also good.

when i adopted my rescue xolo, he too was covered in pimples and blackheads. First thing I did was change his food. The pet store or vet can suggest what would help with your xolo's skin. I give him showers with aveeno baby wash and a loofah. Spent countless hours over a course of months) squeezing out all of his blackheads. That really helped. they did not grow back and with his new diet, his skin is gorgeous now.
