After February 17, 2009, all analog signals will be broadcast in digital. The main reason behind the switch is that digital signal takes less bandwidth than analog, and as a result, broadcasting companies will be able to add more channels for a lower cost. You will most likely need a digital-to-analog converter box if your TV is older and does not support digital signal. This will be great business for the manufacturers of these converter boxes. How many of you still watch analog TV?

Yep, still analog here, but I won't need to upgrade until 2012(Have Dish Network). I don't see why I should throw out a good TV when it still works great.

Personally, I think switching to digital TV is a good thing.

Why do you need to upgrade in 2012 scob? Is it something to do with dish network?

I haven't checked that far ahead yet, lol, we have Direct tv and most of our TVs are already digital ready anyway.........but the big 55 inch in the living room isn't, unless you count the box thingy that Kevin already bought  LOL

If you have cable, disk net work, direct TV, you are good until 2012, if you just have a antenna sitting on top of your tv you need the box.

Cable, satellite and anything thats not just a plain old antenna will still be analog until 2012, it required that they do so by law.

No, if you have the box you don't need to upgrade at all, if you don't have the box, you need to get one by 2012 or upgrade your tv by then.

Basicaly, you don't need the box until 2012 if you have cable or dish.

Anyone correct me if I am wrong here-

The signal going from the satellite to the dish to your receiver is and always was digital, what is coming out of your receiver and into your tv was normally analog and now with new receivers is digital and analog(2 different outputs)

Just a note: I heard that if you have cable but DON'T have a box (which we don't as our cable company does not offer digital cable in our area) then you will need a converter box. So it's not just the antenna people, some of the rest of us are getting screwed over in this deal too.

Just in case some of you didn't know, there is a digital converter box coupon for 40.00 online you can apply for. They will send you 1 or 2 depending on your choice.

It's good at most retailers towards the purchase of your converter box. I know Radio shack and walmart take them for sure as Kevin already ordered the coupons for his mother and grandmother and purchased the boxes :)

Linky https://www.dtv2009.gov/ApplyCoupon.aspx

And link to the website to answer most of the questions you might have about the switch over Feb 17 http://www.ntia.doc.gov/dtvcoupon/

we got 3 boxes, and have 2 hooked up. I get many more channels now, and the picture quality is amazing. so for me, I'm loving the switch. we used the coupons, so it was no big deal.

Im just going by what I have read  so i really dont know lol

Most DIRECTV customers won’t need to take any action. Only customers who get their local broadcast channels over the air via “rabbit ears†or rooftop antenna may be affected by the transition
As long as your TV subscription includes local channels AND all of your TVs are connected to that service, you don’t need to do anything.

*le sigh*

This will be the end of any television in my house. I'm not buying the converter box.
I'll be losing all 4 of my precious, noise ridden channels. LMAO!

IMO, I think the converter boxes should be free. There are plenty of people out there who are not tech savvy, or don't have the money to throw around for converter boxes... not to mention that apparently a lot of the boxes don't even work.

If my great grandma was still living at her home, you can be sure she'd have no idea how to set her TV up with the new converter box. She's 103 years old, she shouldn't have to but some box and fiddle around with plugging it in and setting it up... just to watch the evening news. She couldn't go online to get a coupon because she hasn't ever had a computer.

JMHO.

That's why Kevin took care of everything for his 85 year old grandmother and he took care of his parents while he was at it for good measure, LOL

I know not everyone is lucky enough to have someone to do those things for them..........but I'd say the majority are.

You get your coupon online for 40 (or you can call the 1-800 number) and I do believe that walmart has the boxes for 40........so it works out to free or darn close. Unless of course you have a husband that insists on going to radio shack and buying the best they have

yeah..Dave bought the first one at Radio Shack for $59., cause we wanted analog pass-thru to watch with it now. then the second one at Walmart for $49, which is just as good. bubbat..they only allow 2 coupons per household, so we had to get Stef to order the other one for us.
