HALP TOO MANY BRUSHES.

There are so many options. There is also, apparently, so much fur. What would you suggest I use for regular upkeep for Cohen? What about for semi-annual coat blowing?

Right now my primary tool is a slicker. I'll sometimes use a zoom groom if shedding is heavy but I don't like it much since it kicks fun everywhere. I own a handful of combs and a shedding rake thinger (one of those brushes that looks like a saw curled in half). I don't own an undercoat rake.

What would you recommend?

Here's a recent photo of her coat. It's pretty moderate. Obviously I don't want to damage the coat in the process of de-shedding, but I wouldn't mind learning something new.

Undercoat rake for sure. that was my go-to with the shelties. I also used a slicker but the rake worked better.

Double row undercoat rake is a must have for me and Merlin (whose coat is a bit more floofy than Cohens I think)

followed closely by the self-cleaning slicker (life saver, it has a button that pushes all the hair so you don't have to pick it out) and zoom groom because he likes it.

Hrm... maybe I'll have to pick one up. Though if I recall... it just kind of passed through her coat without picking anything up the last time I tried it. I was given the impression her coat was kind of thin for it.

Thanks guys!

For Recon, these are my must-haves.

De-matting comb

Undercoat Rake

I have tried a slicker on him once and it did like, nothing, compared to these two. I like undercoat rakes with a longer tooth. I don't know what this length is like. I have one with the teeth on the side like a person's comb. It is a lifesaver for Border Collie man and GSD man.

Maybe the double row undercoat rake would work better? I haven't ever used one. The undercoat rake does nothing for the papillons but I assumed it was because they had no undercoat. The shelties definitely had thicker hair but Nikki's wasn't nearly as floofy and long.

I love love love love love the double row, short pronged undercoat rakes. I have a single row, long pronged one that I feel is actually pretty useless. But the double row, short prong? Heck yes.

I honestly don't use slicker brushes for anything besides feathering. I feel like they're pretty pointless to use on the main coat body as it doesn't penetrate.

Using a fine tooth comb (flea comb with metal prongs and a nice handle) also works really well for getting out undercoat and tangles, but it takes forever to make any progress because you have to go at it so slow.

If shedding I'd a concern, I'm still a huge proponent of doing routine coat blowing. I'm actually going to buy a force dryer for this purpose - Abrams coat is hard to deshed due to its texture, but I can blow a TON of the hair out after a bath.

Do you use the dematting comb just for mats? Cohen doesn't get those, luckily.

I like the look of this... Could definitely be my next purchase.

No I do not. I've actually never used it for mats. XD

I use it for small tangles and to get undercoat out. Works GREAT on butts especially in the summer months!
