Sometime this coming spring, I'm going to be getting a new show puppy. In a Facebook group I'm in, I posted asking for suggestions on registered names to go along with the call name Banjo. This will be the second dog I'm getting from this particular breeder and the only breeder I've even gotten a dog from. My first dog just made CH last weekend! This breeder has produced many champions and grand champions. Most of their own dogs are dual champions.

It was brought up, that breeders who let you choose the registered name is or can be a sign of a BYB. My breeder let me choose last time. They didn't even have a theme. Pups from that litter have names all over the place. This time won't be any different.

I'm sure it differs by breed and registry. But choosing names has never been on my list of things to even consider when looking for a BYB. How common is this thinking? I know some breeders do have themes for litters and perhaps have a list to choose from or let the buyer come up with a name that goes with the theme. But if your breeder lets you choose, do most people really think that's a sign of a BYB? The person who brought this up is a dobe person. Is it just in dobermans or all breeds? Just AKC breeders? I'm genuinely curious now!

I have no idea how common it is.

With JRTs pretty much the new owner chooses the name, but then its not like they have show names and call names. Dekka is registered GreyRun Dekka. Snip is weird cause we registered him as GreyRun Short Cut and I think he is the only JRT I have met that has a call name.

Schen's breeder had a theme for that litter. I could pick any name in that theme (It was Miley Cyrus songs.. so he is Jewel's Get it Right)

I have no idea. We were able to chose the registered name of our first dog, a shih tzu. We were not given a choice with our second dog, a Bouvier.

I've always been able to choose the names (aside from kennel name)

that seems like a super arbitrary "sign" of a BYB. All of the breeders that I know within my breed allow the owners to pick the registered name. Most do ask, or require, that their kennel name be in the registered name, but they do not name all the pups and then tell the owners "too bad, this is the reg. name"

I had a cat named Banjo growing up! For a registered name, i'd choose "Play Me Some Mountain Music" to go with the call name Banjo. Hmm, after re-reading your post I just now realized you were asking another group for name suggestions haha.

I would be pretty disappointed if I couldn't choose the registered name for my pets. I even picked them for my rescues!

I've always considered in good manners to include someone's kennel name if I bought the dog from them but I've always had the opportunity to pick call name and reg name.

The only exception to that was purchasing an older dog who already was registered. I kept that one the same.

I'm glad I am not the only one who just found out about this. It literally took me by surprise that it was even brought up. It must just be a Doberman thing...

Landshark! That's already on my list! Lol Or at least the shortened, Mountain Music. I like the mountain theme.

Stitch's litter had a theme. I didn't realize that I was allowed to change his registered name (before paperwork was sent in, obviously) as long as it stuck to the theme, so I just stayed with what the breeder gave him. It seems pretty common to be able to pick your own, though, whether bound by a theme or not. I wouldn't say it's a sign of a "BYB" at all.

Our childhood standard poodle we were only required to have the kennel prefix, then anything was fair game.. the Plotts I've always been able to do whatever I want with as far as naming goes, but I usually use the kennel prefix as a courtesy...

We can't both be wrong! ;) I'm in the Smoky Mountains so I also like Song of The Smokies and Blue Ridge Banjo. Whatever you choose, let us know!

At least in AKC I don't personally know any breeders who stand by their dogs who don't require the kennel name to be part of the registered name, usually at the beginning but that convention varies by breed.

Other than that, rules run from anything else you want to the breeder naming all the puppies themselves. Themes or starting letters are traditionally used to help everyone keep track of which litter a puppy came from, but with the easy access to online databases I think those rules are now used mostly out of habit or to be cute.

I have both ends of the spectrum: Mira's registered name was set by her breeders, and I just added my name as a suffix. With Lo, anything was fine provided it started with their kennel name and was in good taste. Personally, I prefer as much freedom as possible after including the breeder's kennel name, but then we did name Mira's pup before he went home so that may be a bit hypocritical of me!

In most cases, I name and register my puppies before the new owners get them. They come with both a registered name and a call name (obviously, I would prefer the person kept the call name, and most do, but in reality they're free to call their dog whatever they please once they get them home). I wouldn't say that allowing an owner to choose their own registered name is necessarily a sign of a BYB, though most will still ask that the name is approved by them first, since the dog is representing them and their kennel. If they're not so much as requiring their own kennel name be placed in the dog's registered name somewhere (Kennel's XYZ, XYZ of Kennel, etc), that becomes a sign of a BYB.

Kennel name is required in my case. Did I forgot to post that? Sorry! But yes, kennel name and then what ever you want to name the dog. Breeder sends in papers so I guess they approve the name ultimately.

Pretty common in Dalmatians to be able to pick your registered name. Most breeders have a theme. So you do have to pick something within that theme and their kennel name.

I'm curious your reasoning on this. I'm 100% okay with the breeder choosing the registered name (I would prefer the freedom to come up with one but I don't mind one already being in place) but I would never buy a dog I couldn't choose the call name for. I know you said they *can* change it, but why do you prefer they keep it?

I've always been able to choose my dogs' registered names (if they came to me as puppies), but all had to fit the litter theme.

For instance, Seren is from the Fly litter, so her name had to have "Fly" in it somewhere. I went with Kamars First Rule of Flying - which is super vague and means something to only a handful of people, but the breeder was fine with it.

Stark's litter was a superhero theme, so it was no surprise he ended up as Aura's Iron Man. NO surprise. :)
