Just a quick question a little off topic... Why do some women breast feed 3-4 year olds? I was always taught that by AT LEAST 2, the child should be off of breast/formula and onto whole cow milk.

Oh IDK... maybe because it makes sense to most people to feed a human child human milk and not cow milk? :D

Its another of those weird cultural things that is not based in reason. Why do we think cow milk is “normal†but when I tell people my kids have drunk horse milk they get skeeved out. Or when I tell people that cheese they really like is made of sheep’s milk they get all grossed out? Because milk from a cow is okay but milk from a sheep is gross? Its just weird cultural norms that don’t really make any rational sense.

Neat article on a different view on breastfeeding:

No human ever needs to be introduced to diary that is not their mothers milk. Cows milk is really not needed ever, let alone given to a child. I'm not an anti milk person. Just that no one truly needs it and it is totally normal for a toddler to be breastfed till they are 4 for nutritional value.

in some cultures it is expected or the norm. in the west (especially the USA) we're relearning it & different people are taking ideas from different sources.
ideally when you make the switch, it should be goats milk.

The American Pediatric Association recommends kids get breast milk until they are at least 2 years old. Historically (and in a lot of other countries) children are weaned when they hit 4 to 5-ish. I think part of that is at that age they tend to have younger siblings too, but meh.

There's a really interesting article about how it's practiced in Mongolia. Apparently they have a saying that the best wrestlers are breastfed until they're 6 years old, and wrestling is the national sport.

i know in italy to legally be labelled mozzarella the cheese must be made from water buffalo milk. i think romano has to made from sheep milk there as well.
but yeah americans in general have really screwy ideas of what's normal.

Hannah has to have a limited supply of dairy/cows milk. She has had issues with it always but we always blamed it on other things. Serious, horrible constipation. She can have ONE glass of milk a day. Period. She loves milk but can't handle it.

So switching to cows milk really did her a disservice

Didn't read the thread. Hope it's still on topic.

Yeah breastfeeding makes me uncomfortable. Hell, the milk itself makes me uncomfortable LOL, when my mom has daycare kids that are breastfed, and their milk is in our refrigerator, I am like OMG GET IT AWAY FROM MY ORANGE JUICE. I have never seen someone breastfeed in public, if you want to I don't care though... I'm just not going to look anywhere in your direction.

There is absolutely no freaking way I'd be able to hold a conversation with someone while they did it though. No way.

if you can afford it try the goat milk. if that doesn't work look for raw from a certified dairy.

I love that article!

BTW, what does horse's milk taste like? I've heard it's sweeter than cows milk...

Yeah we tried silk and almond milk but none of us were really fans of it. If we would drink any of it it had to be the sweetened vanilla or chocolate ones. The regular was just yucky. Hannah would call it "the sweet milk" and say " i want the regular milk, not the sweet milk". Lol

Its very sweet! Surprisingly when you drink it, because its milk and you’re not expecting that much sweet. I like it though :)
But then I also like cow’s milk from grass fed cows and you can kind of taste what they’ve been grazing on.

I can't imagine why the child is eating that much. That's just so much food! 3 hours of two nurses AND a bottle more?! Is she not feeding more than 5 minutes and running off? In which case, is she just using the nursing as comfort, not actually a "meal"? I'm so more confused by the eating habits than the breast feeding issues! LOL

I'm pretty sure WHO recommends up to (and beyond) 2 years old.

LOL I was going to say that was the only time I could tolerate the regular kind LOL.

Hannah is an oddball though and won't eat her cereal with milk. She has to have it dry lol
