I have a problem with my collie... every time I brush her teeth, if I just gently touch her gums with the toothbrush, they start to bleed. I think she has very sensitive gums. What should I do?
P.S. She bleeds when she chews on bones. And she's 8.

Take your dog to the vet for a teeth cleaning, they will be able to diagnois gingivitis if that is what it is. That is what it sounds like, it is the same symptoms as humans get. Bloody gums, stinky breath.
Her breath isn't bad... anymore than usual, she was just at the vet and he checked out her mouth. also, she's always had sensitive gums. She's scheduled to have a teeth cleaning appointment someday soon

I clean my dogs teeth on a regular basis. I will not have my dogs knocked out for something such as this. And of course, both Whippets and Manchesters are overly sensitive to anesthetics, so it is nothing to be done lightly.
I do ears, teeth and toenails all at the same sitting. And the dogs don't even mind....trusting little souls. Gotta luv 'em.
I looked up gingivitis in my AKC book and also checked her out for the symptons but she doesn't have them. Just the bloody gums, but they're healthy, I checked them. THen again, I'm no vet
Guess you will just have to be extra vigiliant on keeping her teeth and gums clean. If she already has sensitive gums to that extent I would assume that gingivitis would be a real concern.
If she's 8 years old and has never had a professional cleaning than chances are she's ready for one!!!! Take her to your vet for an exam and he/she can tell you if she's ready.
If she already has tartar built up than brushing alone won't take care of it, you need ultrasonic scaling done that only the vet can do.
She has had 1 cleaning from the vet, about 2 years ago. I brush her teeth and give her a dental bone and liquid teeth care. She's always gotten bloody from chewing on bones.
