Best nail clippers

Which scissor style nail clippers are considered the best? Sharpest, easiest to use, etc.

And while you're at it, can someone please confirm for me the optimal way to hold the clipper in relation to the dogs nail? Pictures would be great I am determined to overcome my fear of trimming my dogs nails.

It shows the nails really well.... but full confession I'm still nervous and haven't bought any of the equipment or done his nails. I'm still paying 5 dollars a week to have them dremeled : p

I'm interested to see what people recommend for clippers.

Millers Forge have been my favorite, but any plier-style clippers are fine as long as they are sharp. I bought conair ones and was unhappy, they were dull and Tucker is very sensitive about any discomfort during trims so it was really obvious. I bought millers forge instead and he was instantly better. They have large ones and small ones.


Are you wondering how to handle him, like where to stand and which way to hold his feet or are you just wondering how exactly to cut the nail?

I have him laying on his side. Some people flip the paw upside down, others don't. I'm read somewhere it's best to keep the clipper parallel to the nail ... can't quite figure out what they mean exactly.

I HATED my pair of Conair nail clippers. They were dull and just kind of fell apart a couple months ago while I was trying to do Fable's nails.

They trim really easily because they're nice and sharp, and they're really sturdy. I love the small size because it's a lot easier to manage than the larger ones, and I can get away with it since Fable is only 40 pounds. But I'd probably get the larger one for a dog much bigger than that.

I actually just use a pair of human toenail clippers on Meg now. I feel like I can get a much better feel for where I'm actually cutting, versus with the dog clippers. I'm not sure if they would work on such a big dog, though - they may not open wide enough.

Gusto has made it clear he prefers the dremel. So do I actually, but Meg doesn't love it, and I'm not going to worry about it. Her nails are easy to keep under control with the clippers, and she barely wakes up for those.

This is the general diagram I've seen everywhere showing the angle to clip.

I err on the side of taking less, but clipping more frequently.

So do you hold the clipper so that it cuts from top to bottom, or side to side? I'm not sure how to explain what I'm asking ..... do you hold the clipper vertical or horizontal?

Horizontal, but at a ~45degree angle from the floor. So like, horizontally, but diagonally. :lol-sign:

Usually horizontal so it cuts in at the top and bottom of the nail. But sometimes I'll do vertical too, whatever lets me clip where I want to clip.

I tried to get a video of me clipping Tucker's nails. It didn't turn out great-I was more concerned with clipping his nails than getting a good video so not everything is visible. But you can see how I hold the clippers.

I like the Safari brand, too. I still have a set (small & large) from years ago when they were a darker green and black. I just bought a new set for work (groomer) for looks more than anything, and I brought the old set home to use on my dogs and a few on the side dogs.
