Benny the beagle

A piece of my heart has died. My beloved beagle, Benny, was put to sleep today after fighting Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia and Thrombocytopenia for a month and a half. We went through various treatments and chemotherapy drugs, but in the end his body couldn't handle the stress so I decided to put him at peace and end his suffering. He had muscle atrophy in the head and couldn't close his jaws and had to be bottle fed water over the past few days. I had many plans for us after graduation such as going to hospitals as a therapy dog, exercising to lose weight (both of us) and just chilling and enjoying the prime of his dog years. Those people who were fortunate enough to meet him know how happy he was. I have no regrets of my decision and he lived a very wonderful dog life. I don't regret staying in Friday nights to watch a movie or TV with him and taking him out on my errands as he sat in the car. In a way, he actually trained me to appreciate and love dogs more than I ever thought I could. Benny never judged me, knew my moods, and adjusted accordingly. He was a vital part of allowing me to overcome all the crap I went through the past 3 years.

I love you buddy. Keep your tail up.

I know Benny is in a better place called the Rainbow bridge with all of the pets we loved. Benny sounds like he helped you love and understand dogs more. This was something special Benny did for you and you will always have. You only had each other for a short time, but I can tell how much you loved each other.

The Rainbow Bridge

There is a bridge connecting heaven and Earth
It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge is a land of meadows, hills and valleys, all of it covered with lush green grass.
When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this lovely land. There is always food and water and warm spring weather. There, the old and frail animals are young again. Those who are maimed are made whole once more. They play all day with each other, content and comfortable.
There is only one thing missing. They are not with the special person who loved them on Earth. So each day they run and play until the day comes and one suddenly stops playing and looks up! Then, the nose twitches ! The ears are up! The eyes are staring! You have been seen, and that one suddenly runs from the group!
You take him or her in your arms and embrace. Your face is kissed again and again and again, and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.
Then, together, you cross the Rainbow Bridge, never again to be separated.

What is the best way to go about mourning the loss of a pet?

I'm not sure whether I need time to heal and then wait or if getting a new dog will help ease the pain and allow me to start fresh easier. It is inevitable that I will get another beagle, but the question is just when to.

I think you will know when the time is right to get another dog. The important thing to ask yourself is are you going to compare this new dog to the one you lost? Because if you get one too soon, you may end up doing that. I think you need to allow yourself some time to grieve for Benny and adjust to his loss. It's obvious he was very special to you.
I am so sorry for what Benny and you had to go through. Your post made me cry. Bless you both and know that he is in a better place because of your unselfishness.

I agree, you will know when the time is right. When I lost my Brandy, I was able to wait about a month before I adoped CJ only because my spouse wasn't sure about another dog and I had to convince him. I probably would have done it sooner. Just remember that if you do get another beagle that it's a new puppy with a new personality. My Brandy was a lab but I wasn't able to get another lab because I didn't know whether I would be comparing and expecting the same from the new puppy. Do what is in your heart; that's the best advice.

So sorry for the loss of your beloved Benny. He certainly looked happy in the pic. Thats what you can always hang on to, that you gave him a wonderful life.

I agree with what the others said, you will know when the time is right for another dog. I had to put my dog to sleep a couple of months ago. I knew I would want another dog but I let myself and the rest of my family grieve and gets used to the fact that Odie was gone. Then one day, we all agreed it was time. God Bless you.

I got a new beagle ! Well, I chose him out the other week and will not get him until he's 12 weeks old (end of July).
