Bad Dog Trainer Beware !!

If anyone is looking for a dog trainer in Louisville, KY, be aware of a trainer named Martin Richling. I have set in on one of his classes, and this guy is totally out of his mind !! Whatever you do, don't ever be late for training classes because he totally freaks out yelling & screaming at you !! Mr. Richling thinks he is the smartest dog trainer in the world, and he constantly lets you know it, so much that he says that his training is where dogs are trained correctly. If you believe in dragging your dog cutting off their air, or hitting them with a flexible plastic stick as the best training in the world, then you don't need to own a dog. Mr. Richling clients are totally brain washed because they don't know any better. Mr. Richling trains your dog as if it is going into war or is going to be used as a police or military dog.

Here is an article written by Mr. Richling: A Trainer From Time Past", he talks about beating a dog with a heavy switch until it gets cuts and shows submission: "The switch should be employed until the
animal submits and his will to resist, and the exasperation that
accompanies it, is replaced by fear. So long as the dog does not
submit, but continues to resist, a flexible switch should be used, if
necessary, on the head and jaws, but not on the top of the nose. It
may also be used on the neck, ears, legs and tail, but not on the
sexual parts or on the lower regions of the belly and chest. Apart
from such exceptional cases heavy cuts should only be applied to the
powerful muscles on the fore and hindquarters and on the back."

Mr. Richling is well known for his training methods around Louisville that many of the animal organizations around town have looked into his training methods.

If that wasn't bad enough, if you really want to be scared, Mr. Richling is also a convicted felon. Mr. Richling spent time in federal prison for demanding money from three people for bribes when he was a cop.

Is this the type of person you want training your dog? Would you leave your kids with this type of person?

Be afraid Be very afraid !!

I hope the word gets out more if this is true. There are more trainers like this than one could imagine. It's horrific abuse and I don't understand how it can go unpunished. When people report him, which I would think they would, why isn't anything done about it? Those poor dogs. It is just sickening.

The dobe in the second video looks scared.

The videos do not show the training PROCESS. They show the results after they've been training for a while. God only knows what they did to them when the camera was off.

Justification

You can post as many videos or quote as many excerpts from the Bible as you like, it still doesn’t change the fact that Mr. Richling is teaching his clients to hit their animals with a stick to correct them or make them fear their owner. I didn’t know quoting the Bible made it justifiable to hit a dog with a stick for training? They use to stone people in the Bible, and if I remember right, Jesus was crucified on a cross !! Maybe we should also bring back these 2 things. Maybe if Michael Vick threw out a couple of quotes from the Bible he can get off.

Hey, I’m all into correcting your kids with a belt on their butts when they need it, or smacking my dog on the butt when he needs it, but hitting your dog with a switch until he submits out of fear is a bit much! So if it takes you making your dog bleed until he submits, is this also justifiable?

The real question, how many times did the dogs in those videos have to be hit with a stick or dragged around with a pinch collar before they were able to be classified as trained correctly?

If I knew someone was going to keep hitting me with a stick or dragging me around with a pich collar around my neck if I didn't do what they said, I would also go up and down on command like the dog in those videos.

Swilson, your post was very interesting. Purdue is a student of Richlings'. There have been several thread about his experience as a new student with Richling. No Richling (his methods) are not well respected in the training industry. The videos speak for themselves. His dogs are very slow on the drop on recall and display very inappropriate posture. Richling's timing on hand signals are "off" and it appears to be confusing to dog, causing a bit of anxiety. (The anxiety is easily detected in the dogs response and posture.) He's aggressive in his tone, shouting instructions as if they were corrections verses commands. His Dobie looks roach-backed, pinned ears, lacks real drive. Shouting may have been nessesary because he has no place to train these dogs other than out in a field, still unfortunate though. The insert from his book, if accurate, was sad. I've stated this in many threads... Richlings' methods of physical force, abuse and aggression to achieve obedience, are considered very, very old school and the lazy mans way of training.

good post otch. I don't like it, that dobe looked like they were doing it because they simply had to not because they were excited and having fun.
Imagine havig a dog that does things out of fear? why not do a bit extra work and have a dog do things well above your expectations because it really just loves the look you get on your face when they do well.

your dogs should NEVER have to fear you. fear does not equal respect and its time a lot of trainers learnt that.

Exactly. I'm sure there are plenty of training videos where the dog actually looks happy and eager to perform. Those videos are not included in that group lol. Heck, I could make a video of all my dogs' training tomorrow, and they wouldn't look scared and stressed like that dobe looked lol... I wouldn't touch a trainer like that with a 40 foot pole, the dogs don't lie.
