We do not but dont the French and some Eruo countries do? Some old time traditional southeners will serve up a horse that is lame or going to be put down due to an injury that would be more painful to heal.
Where in the world did you get that from????? I come from a long line of "traditional southerners" and I can tell you that I've NEVER heard of that. I was born and raised in the south, and down here, we don't eat horses. It may get shot, but it's not going to be eaten

Yes but I don't doubt that some people still eat the horse meat.

I mean you can buy horse meat in the grocery store IIRC. Haven't actively searched for it recently but I'm 90% sure it's there.

Can I just ask you which Kentucky Derby winners have been eaten in Japan? Horses of that calibre generally move on to the breeding shed....
It is believed that Ferdinand was slaughtered in Japan a year or two ago.

I stand by my belief that the process of getting horses to slaughter needs to be done as humanely as possible, but that banning slaughter is not the way to go.

So are you against all euthanasia? My trainer recently had to put down a wonderful broodmare who had been suffering the effects of an unknown illness for the better part of the summer. She had reached the point where she could barely get up (she developed laminitis as a result of the illness). Should she have been kept alive to go through more pain? I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who could look at that horse and say that. And every possible measure was done for the mare. Horses, and most prey animals, are much more frightened of being hurt and incapacitated than they are of death.

He was, but he wasn't specifically shipped to Japan for slaughter - he was shuttled there for stud services but kept throwing duds. Very efficient management if you ask me, as I don't think there are thousands of acres to farm horses on. As far as what I have been informed though, he certainly wasn't eaten - apparantly, the Japanese have a specific "breed" of horse that is especially tasty that they prefer and thoroughbred is not one of them!
