Are there any dog breeds you find ugly/dislike the look of?

I don't care for the look o brachycephalic dogs and in most cases, strongly prefer dogs with tails. I don't like some of the extreme heads and super tiny "pig eyes" some show Collies have. I'm not a fan o show Pekes but find most pet bred ones adorable. I was never a fan of dwarf breeds but living with a corgi, I have kinda gotten used it LOL.

I'm pretty picky when it comes to the looks department.

I don't think I've met an English Bulldog I think is cute. Ever. Same with most brachycephalic breeds. I think the only one I can find adorable 9 times out of 10 is the tibetan spaniel. I've met a couple pugs I find cute. I enjoy them as dogs, but would never get any of them just based on their looks.

As a blanket statement, I don't generally like dogs with beards. I don't care for doodles especially, and while I have met the occasional Crested cute, I don't like the look of the Xolo or other hairless breeds either. I also don't really like short legged dogs - corgis, vallhunds, dachshunds, etc. Their heads are fine - but once you get to the body is it just plain odd.

I have a pretty strong ideal and sometimes it's hard to leave the judgement out when I'm looking at a dog that doesn't fit it. I can still find some adorable, but would still never get a dog in those categories.

Ps. Lauren, sorry to hijack, but is this a pap? It's my friends dog- she says its an improperly bred pap- like 17 pounds. Wasn't sure if you thought it was more of a mix- just curious- would never correct her if not :)

Yep he looks all pap to me! some rescue paps get pretty big. I've known a few that were 17 lb+. He is very cute!

He is isn't he! That is crazy some can be as big as 17 pounds and as little as mia! :)
I often suggest people with big dogs or younger kids who want a Pap get a larger rescue one, as they seem pretty easy to find and IMO are sturdier. With most of the toy breeds, if they aren't being selected for the small size in each generation they tend to become more moderate sized fairly quickly. Any extreme traits gained through selective breeding tend to "want" to drift towards moderation if not being continuously selected for - show GSD angulation, collie heads, very large or very small size, exaggerated dwarf characteristics, etc.

I'm really picky. I mean I can like a lot of the dogs even if I don't care for them physically but...yeah just saying I'm picky.

Basically I like mid-range dogs in terms of size (say 25-55lbs) who are built rather lightly but balanced...with a fur coat that is neither super short (think Bloodhound, Staffie, etc.) or really long...feathered is fine but not like a Terv or Beardie. Neither extreme on face either, though I prefer tending toward long over short. And nicely shaped eyes. Prefer a sort of prick or semi-prick natural ear though a smallish well-shaped drop ear is okay. Gotta have a tail. Not predominately white.

It's easier to say what I like than what I don't...and like I said there's a lot of wiggle room and none of this really applies to an individual dog if that makes sense. And there are dogs owned by friends of mine that "violate" just about everything above whom I adore.

It honestly took me a while to even like Flat-Coat heads...and they aren't even that extreme (except some of the foreign heads now but we won't get into that). I've been drawn into the dark side though because now I really think a nice typy but moderate FCR head is nice...guess it's all what you're used to

Mia's a couple pounds bigger than when you saw her. I think she's finishing off at right under 7 lbs. Still a tiny little thing :p. Big paps are easy to come by. I think the biggest I know is 23 lbs, which is bigger than one of my shelties!

Depends. I think hair cuts play a big role for me.

My breed is Westies, but I find some ugly (freight trains, long muzzles, long tails, pink ears, etc), or when they are trimmed horrendously. Same with some Yorkies, Shih Tzus, etc etc... If they are trimmed cute they look cute even if they are "ugly" underneath. But a lot of the flat face, bug eyes I don't like.

oh I absolutely love the variety in breeds--so I could easily take any one based on looks. Now, fit of personality/needs into my life is another story. But on looks alone--I love them all!

Boxers. I've met some (either really excellent show quality, or Boxers who are so far from being up to breed standard they could be called Pit Bulls) who are stunning. But, many more who are bug-bloodshot-eyed, have twisted faces, crusty noses, weird jaws, scream bloody murder, have snot/dirt constantly flying from them. Paired with gangly legs that are hurled at your chest 99% of the time. I know they are one of the breeds that is supposed to look silly, but I couldn't see myself living with that. I used to want one! But after spending time with thousands, the vast majority terribly bred, I am past that phase.

Any dog that snots and snorts is not my thang. There are some flat-faced dogs that I really love, but in general I wouldn't want one. I don't mind drooly dogs, but snot is nasty. Brache's with long noses, although conformationally "incorrect", I like. It saddens me that dogs are purposely bred to have all of those health problems.

Show and BYB German Shepherds... oh lordy!

Most Labs... I'm just used to seeing sooo many poorly bred Labs. Most of them look like a weird assortment of body parts; curly tail, tiny shrunken head (or giant Rottie head!), fat body, long legs, incredibly swayed back. Most look like mixes. When I see a well bred or even well-put-together Lab it surprises me! A well-bred Lab is a breath-taking dog, but a rarity.

Hmm. I find almost all dogs cute. Still, I won't lie, there are some physical traits I'm not crazy about, though. Wiry fur like with a Scottish deerhound and rough fur like with a Westie. "Beards" like with a schnauzer. Curly hair like with a poodle. Hairy hair like shih tzus and Lhasa apsos.

That said, it's not like I see one of those breeds and think "OMG UGLY!" They're just not my thing.

I generally don't like the looks of the smooshed in faces breeds. Yes, ther eis a word for that, but I can not spell it :p

Whenever I meet a dog though, I kinda forget about what they look like, its weird. Like, I met a pug, and fell in love, even though he was fat and badly bred. But he was so sweet he was hard not to like

LOL - most of that is so Harleigh! She isn't what I call the best looking Lab out there (she is all wrong as far as standard goes), but her personality is to die for, so I don't care if she has the giant head, super long legs and curly tail. :rofl1:

Plus, I think she's gorgeous, but ya know a mother always think their child is the cutest thing out there :D

Psh... Harleigh is very cute!!! Most of the Labs I see (well, most dogs) are also not well cared for, are very overweight and have joint/structural issues because of that. A dog who is in really good shape and is super well cared for is instantly much more attractive to me. Harleigh is also a giant, Daney Lab which makes her special. :) She has a nice head and expression. I am not a fan of shrunken, snippy heads in any breed.

I pretty much like any dog breed/mix based on looks. It's individual things that squick me out, and those could occur in any breed though some breeds are more likely to have them than others.

Flat feet. Don't know why, they just totally give me the willies. I'm talking, no knuckling at all. Has that "squished by a car" look and they walk like they are dog paddling on land. Ugh.

Ramrod straight stifles. After my cousin got a springer with that defect whose knees constantly pop out of joint, it gave me the willies. She was in so much pain every time it happened, but they had to wait until she was 2 years old to get surgery to repair it. :(

Then bandy legs and walking down on their hocks. I mean, I know it doesn't necessarily mean they're in pain or anything, but it makes me cringe every time.

There are SO many breeds I wouldn't own, but I'm having a hard time coming up with breeds I don't find attractive. Most of the time they get the "so ugly they're cute" reaction from me.

I'd say Poodles though, all varieties. I'm sure this is also because of the fact that I have met a grand total of 2 poodles I liked out of a LOT of dogs. Please don't jump on me for this - just not my type of dog!

Not a fan of the look of Bichons.

Bouviers and Schnauzers aren't my favorites, though by far not the worst!

I don't like the body type of English Bulldogs.

Oh, I really dislike the appearance of Shar-Peis.

(If anyone was wondering why these are all in alphabetical order, I was having a hard time thinking of breeds so I went to the AKC website and looked at the breed list LOL)

See, I'm not a fan of how some of those breeds are groomed, but underneath it the dog is still awesome. And grooming is easily altered. With shar-peis it's more in the realm of "weird health problems". I LOVE the old bone mouth peis. The hippo meat mouth types have some weird extra skin issue and that squicks me out a little, though I'd probably still own one if the right dog fell into my lap.

The bichon grooming makes them look odd to me, like stuffed animals with eyes set waaaay to close together. lol. I like them in a regular puppy cut though.

see? odd. . .

cute!

A LOT of "show quality" dogs. Unlike ihartgonzo, I think show quality Boxers are horribly unattractive. Something about the muzzle...bleck. My friend's rescue boxer is so much prettier.

Wirey haired dogs. Do not like them at all.
