I wish I could smell. For those of you who are here regularly, you may or may not remember that I lost my sense of smell back in September following a particularly severe sinus infection. Well, I finally went to a ENT (ear nose throat) specialist today to get it looked at.

I went in, explained the situation and then I got novocaine sprayed up my nose. That's right, the stuff they use to numb you for cavities in my nose and down my throat.... Then she stuck a camera up my nose to look around (for polyps or other abnormalities). What did I find out? Well, I have an exceptionally crooked septum apparently but I've probably had it all my life so that's not causing it. Nothing else appears to be wrong so the Dr.s best guess?

Nerve Death.

Yes, that's right, my stupid sinus infection was probably accompanied by a malicious nose nerve eating virus... Which apparently is the more common way to lose one's sense of smell (which is called Anosmia fyi). So it's probably permanent and not fixable... BUT, we're going to try a course of prednisone (Anti-inflammatory steroid) and see if there is any swelling around the nerve that could be reduced and return at least part of my sense of smell and taste.

So even though it sounds funny, can I have some smelling vibes?

Has your sense of taste improved at all?

If it makes you feel any better, nerves do regrow. Slowly, but it happens. My neurologist told me that it's about 1/4 an inch per year. There are supposedly things you can do to help stimulate regrowth, so if the prednizone doesn't help send me a pm.

Olfactory sense vibes coming your way! My friend's Dad had the same problem .. his was following a broken nose from a car accident, followed by a nasty antibiotic-resistant staph bacterial infection in the broken nose. He got the same diagnosis as you ... nerve death. If it helps, he DID regain his sense of smell ... it just took a few years to gradually return to what it had been before the accident and resulting infection.

If it makes you feel any better, nerves do regrow. Slowly, but it happens. My neurologist told me that it's about 1/4 an inch per year.
^^^ Very true!! It used to be thought otherwise, but nerves do grow back. That research is currently being used to help spinal injury patients.

Ohh thanks for the info and vibes guys! *hopes for nerve regrowth*

Also my sense of taste is a little better. It started off as everything was too salty or too sweet but it's starting to be more controlled/moderate.

Thanks Romy, I will take you up on the offer!

Know how you feel (lost my sense of smell a couple of years ago - can't even tell when there's a skunk around.) Sending good vibes your way!
