Annoying dogs...

I'm definitely a dog person, but I'm also a dog snob.
I research them in my spare time, oogle whenever I see a breed I've never seen before, and have otherwise dedicated way too many hours of my life to dogs.
But by god - I would not hesitate to cover half of the cages in the boarding kennel with towels so that I could sweep the floor in relative peace :rofl1: And then I'd leave with a whole "I hate dogs" mentality until ten minutes later when I was back to researching breeds and/or playing with my own dog.
Anyhow... I think it's possible to be both a dog person and a dog snob

BUT, that being said, even dogs who are hugely annoying tend to behave around me, when it comes to jumping, being annoying, etc. I had a friend complain about their dog, and when I met him I LOVED him. I kept saying, "I LOVE his energy and enthusiasm"... She was like... You can have him LOL. He was like "derrrrr" when you talked to him

I do like most dogs. There's a few obnoxious individuals but it mostly comes down to training. My friend's beagle for example was soooo much better when my roomie had her for a semester. Then she went back to her owner and was obnoxious again. amazing what training and exercise does.
I'm not one to fawn over any dogs that aren't mine, even if I really really like them though. It just is weird to me and I have a dog that hates it so I just.... don't.

Most dogs annoy me, I'll admit it. I just really have a thing for manners - my guys have their quirks of course, but are ultimately well behaved and pleasant to be around. Jumping, barking, and general chaotic energy.... omg can't handle. Unless you're a puppy. Then you get a free pass.
My favorite way to spend my free time is to hang out with my dogs. I would classify myself as a "dog person." I just don't want to spend extensive amounts of time with other people's dogs (er, anything more than petting, really) unless they are a super cool dog.

I like most dogs. My friends pretty much all have rather ill mannered dogs, but they're not mine, so I don't care haha. Even without manners all of their dogs are super endearing and adorable and I love them all! That said, I doubt I could live with them long term as is. They'd need a few extra manners for me lol.
I do get what you mean, though. Some dogs really are just annoying, and especially so if you spend an extended length of time with them. I like the vast majority of dogs out there, but I definitely would not want to live with most of them permanently. I used to do a lot of house-sitting, and while I did like almost all of the dogs, I was always glad to let their owners care for them again. And I've been around some dogs who just drive me crazy from the get go, whom I really don't like to be around, but thankfully that's not the norm for me.
Even my own dogs annoy me from time to time and I sometimes wish I could snap a finger and turn them all into lazy, sleep all day dogs.
But yeah, I definitely am a dog person. I'm just better at loving other peoples' dogs from a safe distance (ie: no longterm responsibility for them in most cases), and I care way more about my own dogs than anyone else's. Unless I know you, I usually don't even approach other dog owners/dogs. Not because I don't like the dogs, because I probably would, but I just don't feel a need or a desire to meet most peoples' dogs. As much as I love them and dogs are my world.

I'm pretty snobby too. I'll like a lot of dogs, but it's a select few that I get really excited about. There are also tons that I'm indifferent to, and some that I actively dislike. People who know that I'm a "dog person" are always surprised to hear me bitching about dogs that I work with. Just being a dog doesn't make it a wonderful unique snowflake. There's training and socialization and time that has to go into it, too, and some types just... don't mesh with me, even when the effort is put in. I can enjoy hanging out around pretty much any dog, but if I have to take care of it, my standards are a lot higher for a dog I'll actually enjoy.
Although like Kootenay said, I don't know that I would love my dogs if they weren't mine, LOL. I've actually described dogs that drive me bonkers as "like Riff, but without any bond between us", and people get it. Riff is a spazzy, nervy nutcase, but he's my spazzy, nervy nutcase! I love that little dog to pieces, but if you throw a random spazzy, nervy dog at me, I'm probably not going to be a fan, if that makes sense.

I did have one dog subvert this, though. The owners had a Weim mix (they always seemed to be okay IME, it was pure Weims that were nuts) and we heard that they adopted another dog, a pure Weim. I made a comment to my manager about how I hoped they didn't expect the dog to be anything like their first.
He was AMAZING. He became my #1 favorite dog (before I met Milo, anyway.) Just perfect all around. He was undocked, so we started joking that Weims keep their brains in their tails. :lol-sign: But in 4 years at daycares/boarding facilities, he was the ONLY one I could even stand, never mind adore.
I could see how they could go wrong, but all but one of our Vizslas were awesome, and we had a bunch. They seem to be really popular in CO, at least around Denver.

Before I got Abrams and was growing disheartened that I'd ever find a breeder with a puppy available, I was starting to get really, really tempted to adopt a rescue. My one caveat was that I had seen SO many dogs come through work from the shelter for spays/neuters that were absolutely nightmares. Friendly until you go to restrain, cage aggressive, never shut up and stopped barking, would crap all over itself, etc., etc. and I didn't want to end up with one of those dogs. LOL I don't think I'll ever adopt any dog unless I can interact with it for a day or two in a vet/boarding setting and see how it responds to stress. Some behaviors I can tolerate...others I cannot.

Omg. So freaking nutty! I don't get it. Before working at a pet hotel, I thought they were such noble dogs... I think they just do very badly in a boarding situation. Also, female GSPs are craycray. Male GSPs are little angels.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE dogs, even when I find them annoying I know it's not their fault! I enjoy working with difficult dogs the most, but it baffles me how much rude behavior some people tolerate & even reward in their dogs. There are dogs who I watch who come into my house and promptly knock everything off the coffee table, like, how do you live like this doge? I often wish I could've owned/raised some dogs that I find annoying, just because I know they are awesome and could be the best dog ever with the right owner.
I think this is because Labs are so popular, and most people are really dumb. I still only met 1 aggressive Lab... out of thousands! That says a lot. They're super derpy at worst.

I actually like bratty, because it shows a working brain. I don't even mind poor manners when the owner isn't aroundbecause I can at least correct them. Its neediness that I despise. Follow me around if you must, but for the love of god quit touching me all the freaking time! You will not die if our bodies are not connected. Labs, goldens, and pits are the worst offenders for.it.
I love dogs that jump and gush over people actually. At the kennel, even the most annoying dogs I really did like. Even some of the fear biters, cage biters, barkers, etc I really enjoyed.
Living with full time is different, yes, would not want for an actual permanent member of my house, but I still like them.

yeah im with some people here. im NOT a dog person. i like my breed, and a select few dogs of other breeds that i specifically fancy, and thats it. i guess iv been soured on "everyone elses dogs" by being a groomer and daycare attendant my entire adult life and having to deal with the jerkwads that everybody else considers "lovely"

I appreciate all dogs, they all have their quirks, they all have their good sides. I however, hate to share my house with other dogs without their owners there. I would stress and become a crazy-control freak whenever I would take in a new foster or if I had to watch someone's dog for an extended period of time. I love my dogs and our routine, I don't like things that change that.
Also, I'm not really a petting person, I don't like to gush over other people's dogs and have a weird need to wash my hands after touching dogs. However, ask me to train them to do something and I'm all over that. I think this is why training is such a good fit for me, I hated working in grooming salons, I hate pet sitting, but for group classes I only have to see the dogs for an hour each week and then they go away. Perfect.
