Hey everyone.

Not sure if you guys have heard on your news or not, but alberta is facing some major major floods. A city in the kananaskis mountains, canmore, is completely flooded out. Million dollar homes are being swept away, bit by bit, by a raging river.

Cougar creek before was just a trickling stream, here it now: (you can see the houses dangling)

High River (hur hur, high river), a town of 13,000 is completely evacuated. My dads house is flooded out unfortunately. They got the worst of it, the army was called in to help. Here's a pic of downtown:

The front of my dads house as it was creeping up:

Man swims after his kitty:

Calgary has a total of 100,000 evacuated from their houses. My area, even though we're very close, is the one of the few left because we're luckily on a hill.

This is a bridge going into downtown Calgary

My roommate and I headed down to go have a look-see before the river had swallowed most of the pathways. We were walking through the banks and it started out ankle deep and just in 15 minutes it was up to our knees. Time to go!

This is the Calgary zoo. A lot of the big cats are being held in the calgary court houses in jail cells.

Our dam overflowing:

We've never experienced flooding like this. Lucky enough to not have any injuries or deaths so far! But a lot of damage to property, roads are dug up and flooded all over the city. High River and Canmore were also completely flooded, HR was flooded out within 1hr, it was a flash flood. We continue to have a lot of rain.. Send your vibes out for people who are homeless right now! We haven't had relief yet.

(((HUGGIES))) Calgary looks awful, have family there, thankfully they are safe and dry. Southern BC is getting it pretty bad too, they've had to evacuate tons of houses, lots of road wash outs. I believe the crows nest pass is closed down. Thank fully I am on higher ground and it has stopped raining, but that water is still coming down those mountains like mad. I am hoping things will settle down soon. I just can't imagine what people are going through in Calgary and Canmore right now, and everyone else effected by the flood.

So sorry for your dad and all the people affected by the floods. My best friend is in Calgary and luckily her neighbourhood is okay, but all the surrounding ones have been evacuated. So scary!

Stay safe!

I wonder if stampede is going to happen... There's a lot of damage to the stampede grounds and saddledome I hear.

The jumbotron is completely damaged. Luckily they do most of their set up like.. 5 days in advance but on the radio they said they'll do their best to open on time

Zhucca, have your heard anything from Devan on how she and her family is doing?
I haven't. I believe she was living in an area that was evacuated, but she was also moving real soon. So i'm not sure. I just sent her a fb message to see, or maybe she'll post in the thread!

I was just going to throw up a thread seeing how everyone down there were doing! Glad to hear everyones dry and safe.

I didnt think they actually moved the large cats, just the pot bellied pigs and a couple zebras had been moved off the property.

Yeah apparently the big cats did not end up getting moved, I guess that's just the last resort.

So far the river hasn't gone down, it actually went up last night. It means our highways got closed again even though they were reopened last evening.

Medicine Hat where we are has claimed a state of emergency as well. It is suppose to peak by midnight tonight. Over 10,000 have been evacuated. We have opened up our home to families that have to be evacuated since we are in an area where there is no chance of flooding. The city is expecting over 6000 cubic feet of water per second coming through. It is going to devastate a lot of people.

2013 Flood Information Update
Posted Date: 6/23/2013 9:00 AM

Bridge closures include Scholten Hill and Industrial Avenue.

The Maple Ave. Bridge and Findlay Bridge will both be closed to the public as of 10:30 a.m. This includes both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

There is a reasonable possibility the TransCanada Highway Bridge will be closed at some point over the next 24 hours. We will do our best to provide 1-2 hours of notice before this occurs.

If the TransCanada Highway Bridge were to be closed, the City would be divided between north and south. All agencies and supporting departments are employing crews on both sides of the river to prepare for that possibility.

Priorities over the next few hours are to continue supporting the construction of berms in vulnerable areas and to support traffic and bridge initiatives.

The outdoor water restriction remains in place and includes Medicine Hat, Redcliff, Dunmore, Seven Persons, Veinerville, Desert Blume and the Westside Water Co-op. Bylaw will be enforcing the water restriction.

Residents are advised to remain away from bridges, waterways, banks and evacuated areas for their own safety. Rescue from the river may not be possible.

The Urgent Care Centre in Crescent Heights will be operational from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The Urgent Care Centre at the Medicine Hat College will be open 24 hours a day.

No further volunteers are required at this time. Potential volunteers are asked to await further instructions.
Echo Dale Park is closed. Kin Coulee Park is expected to be closed in the coming hours. All trails adjacent to rivers and creeks are closed.

Pictures from around Medicine Hat from the past 12 hours:

The sad thing is as of late last night 60-70% of people that were told to evacuate certain areas were refusing to evacuate. The city has stated that they have to leave now and that they are putting first responders at risk if they have to be rescued.

"City of Medicine Hat

Quick update on the overnight numbers.

At 23:00 the river was at 5,450 cubic metres/second
At midnight, the river was at 5,460 cubic metres/second
At 2 a.m. it was 5,400 cubic metres/second
At 5:15 a.m., it was 5,360 cubic metres/second
At 6:15 a.m., it was at 5,320 cubic metres/second

We believe the crest has occurred and we have seen the worst of the flooding"

So now it is just a matter of waiting for the waters to recede to see what the damages are. Dh and I are checking to see what we have to donate to families in need. There are already people gathering things for donations. I really love and admire our city and province. Really warms my heart to see how willing people have been to volunteer, donate and help their fellow citizens.
