Hi:

I've been reading up on adoption for a while now and feel pretty confident that I can identify a good dog for me from the shelter, but I was wondering if anyone else had any tips or anything? How long should I spend with a dog to get a good idea before I adopt?

Thanks,

Mike

don't just go to one shelter. go to a ton! as many as you can! eventually you should see a dog that just 'clicks' and you'll know it's for you. there maybe a lot of dogs that you like but if you look long enough you'll find the one that was meant for you :)

You can also browse a lot of local shelters on Petfinder.com if you want to save on gas. But yes, meet as many dogs as you can, one will "click" with you and you will just know that's the dog for you.

I've been going to the same shelter for a while now, the only one in my city. I found a dog that clicked and after a few months of reading up I think I was ready,a nd adopted her today. She's a real sweetheart and hoping I did the right thing, even though I'm pretty sure I did.

congratulations! :)

I fostered several dogs before I found Fuzzy.
I think it's a good thing for anyone to do before adopting -
you get to help a shelter, plus find out what type of
dog fits you best.
I wasn't even planning to adopt one permanantly,
but the minute I saw Fuzzy he was mine.
Perfect match.
