when you live in a sub. city it's different. you dont want these rodents reproducing and getting out of hand. Animal control is not going to come out for a possum and i'm not wasting time and money buying traps so the kids around here can mess with them. The last glue trap i setup caught a 7 year old kid.

your son looks very hesitant to touch that critter! haha
He's cute! How old is he now?

I just wanted to say, if you were raised as a "respectful" hunter...you would never have attempted to shoot a opossum with a pellet gun...... that as you said just doesn't do the trick. Either trap/relocate or use a bigger gun, if you are having problems.
In my experience, a young opossum was regularly gaining access to our basement...... Hubby just picked the young'in up by the tail. Here is a picture of him in our kitchen. And as politely as possible, put him in the neighbors yard.........then we fixed the crawl space opening that lead to access to our basement...........problem solved.

They can be very mean, but would never attack unless cornered. Unless of course if it were diseased. I have not had any problems just respecting their space, and have never seen a rabied one either.:)

Ok, I live in africa, I live on the slopes of Table Mountain. I have a colony of mongoose living in my front yard. They can carry rabies, my dog is inoculated against it and is NOT allowed to bother them.

We have Cape Cobra, Rinkals and Puff Adder. They can kill with one bite. My dog is not allowed to bother them. I don't think blowing animals to bits because you think they are in your way or dirty is right at all.

There is nothing wrong with respecting each others space and if that fails, relocation.

Trust me, humans are far more dangerous then any animal out there.

Julie, that baby possum is just too cute!!!!!! And you son is a munchkin!

I was talking more like, a box trap. ;) It is very easy to catch an opossum in a box trap...... they aren't that "bright". Lol

In that picture my son was two. He is 7 now.

Yea.....:p He has grown up quite a bit since then.

Cobras and adders. I'm shivering here. lol.

I don't do snakes. I would have to kill, move or never sleep again. I admire the bravery of people who can co-habitate with this type of creature. I'm just not one of them. I sold a home in a place with far better weather than upstate NY. I will stay in upstate NY where no self respecting alligator, colorful snake or intercoastal rat would care to live. So you can see why a possum would not be my idea of something I want visiting me. I am used to squirrels. That's about it.

I will admit one thing. I saw something in the intercoastal go by our dock that I know not many people will ever see. I know I most likely will never see it again as well. A manatee and its young one literally stopped by. This was one of those Once In A Lifetime things. I was awed and heartbroken for the scar tissue on this gentle cumbersome creature. We gave it a head of lettuce. Very cute!

Aww! Manatee, my favorite sea mammal! I would love to see one in the flesh, it is sad how the outboard motors damage them!

For your viewing pleasure.

OH i LOVE possums. i remember just before the flood i heard a lot on the radio about there being a lot of dead possums around. i dunno why. i guess they were travelling away from the water and kept getting hit by cars.

i was walking along the riverbank and i saw a dead one all curled up ont he ground. it made me really sad
