I got some great advice here when I got my first dog, and I've been lurking ever since. But now I've got a new dog and need some advice. We just adopted a 2 year old Boxer from animal control and he is eating all the chew toys in the house. Fortunately the only things he chews on are toys, but I'm afraid if I can't find something a little more durable, he'll run out of appropriate things to chew. Murphy has already destroyed a couple that our Beagle mix has had for 3 years. Any recommendations on toys that will last awhile with a strong chewer?
He's a great dog. Fully housebroken, and crate trained as we discovered yesterday. He and Maya are getting along pretty well. Luckily I think he's going to let her be the dominant one even though she is half his size. He's just so laid back, not once has he even responded in any way to her growling at him. She only seems to growl when he runs past her and knocks into her on the stairs, or when he climbs on the bed and doesn't stay at the end of the bed. She has no problem with him being on the bed unless he tries to get in "her" spot up near our heads. If anyone has any advice on how to make having a new brother as easy as possible for Maya please let me know.
Our vet said the majority of rescue boxers he sees in this area are abused or neglected, but that Murphy looks like he's in pretty good shape, and it's pretty obvious he hasn't been abused. He's missing a little fur on his paws which could either be demodex mange or just the conditions he was kept in, but other than that, no issues, we just have to keep an eye on it. Animal control said he was turned in because his owner lost his job and couldn't afford him. He is absolutely wonderful with people especially kids. He just couldn't get enough of giving my husband's one year old brother kisses. Overall I think we got very, very lucky with him. So anyway, here are some pictures:
This toy lasted about 3 minutes after this photo was taken.

Maya looks upset in this one, but he jumped up there after her and they stayed there for about 20 minutes.

LOL thanks, me too. I've wanted a boxer for about 5 years now, and am finally at a place in my life where the timing is right. We've been looking off and on for about a month for one at animal control or the humane society. He was a little shy in the run at the shelter, but the second they brought him into the room with us that boxer wiggle and playfulness came out and I was in love. After about 5 minutes I told my husband to go fill out the adoption paperwork.

HE IS VERY HANDSOME!! Congrats!!

Well when you find something he can't destroy...........you fill ME in on it too! LOL

I have yet to find a toy that is indestructible. My suggestion, Kongs, Cuz, Hollee Rollers, and good old fashioned home made donkey tails (strips of fleece braided together) Orson loves them and they are CHEAP to make! hahaha

LOL, I figure everything is going to be destroyed eventually, but if I'm going to spend $10 or more, I'd like a few more than 5 minutes out of it. I'll try some of your suggestions. We have a Kong ball they like to play with, so I'll try some of the bones and stuff too.

These are my new favorites. I have a ton of very strong chewers on my client list and am a huge interactive toy supporter, they've proven to be very durable. The Tux toys are great for smears and odd shaped cookies.

The JW pet line is also great, specifically the holee molee extreme in size 6.

If you give a dog a stuffable interactive toy and stuff goodies into it rather than just giving the toy to play with, they tend to be more interested in trying to figure out how to get the treat/smear out instead of chewing the toy apart.:)

Cool toys Dr2little.. haven't seen the Tux toys before.

My guys are serious chewers. We like the everlasting treat balls. The 'ball' seems darn near indestructable.

The canine genius leo toy (linky) is a hit, and the 'extra' one seems to be standing up to some serious abuse. Very hard to get things out of.

The monster mouth is a huge hit too (linky). Not sure how durable it is.. better than a kong I think. I am so amused by a toy that looks like its ready to bite back. Harder than a kong to get things out of.

I also like the toys that are made from fire hoze type material. Takes a while to kill those ones.

OH he is a doll! What a great match. I personally recomend the thick tire biters they are made of heavy duty rubber and most have a nylon rope attachment so it doubles as a chase, chew and tug toy.

Also I really like any of the tugs made out of fire hose material- if you happent to find something along those lines, IMO it's worth the money as it will last.

Also the food cube is a great enrichment toy as it allows foraging, you would probably want to give it to the dog's when they are seperate as it can be a little frustrating when the dog is first trying to figure out how the heck does the food get out.

Kongs of course always a great investment- for him get the heavy duty black ones- just so they last.

I want LOTS of updates and pictures, you hear me *shakes fist*.

Congrats again, what a gorgous guy.

Nylabone has quite a few bones for strong chewers.

Nova has this one: http://www.nylabone.com/products/non-edible/double-action/
She has the big one (about 6 or 8" long) and it's good because the ends are plastic and very durable, and the green part in the middle is bumpy and squishy, but really hard to actually destroy because they can't get their molars on it (cause it's in the middle).

Here's Nylabone's product list for power chewers: http://www.nylabone.com/products/non-edible/durable-chews/

They tend to be expensive, but they also tend to be long lasting. And they are quite varied, which is cool. This is super cute: http://www.amazon.com/Nylabone-Dental-Dinosaur-Non-Flexible-Assorted/dp/B0002ZFNVE

Thanks for all the suggestions. We'll be taking a trip to Petsmart in the next couple of days. He is doing wonderful. We've discovered that he likes to steal trash out of the bathroom wastebaskets though, so the doors will be kept closed from now on. I was fully prepared for behavioral issues with a rescue, so if that's the worst of it, I consider myself extremely lucky. I'm headed out for a little, but I promise to post some new pics when I get home.

That's so awesome. :) We definitely need more pictures, though. I haven't seen you around a whole lot, but now that you have TWO little cuties it's just a crime not to share their adorable-ness with us. :D

I WANT this. Is this at petco/petsmart? Middie would go gaga over it.

I ditto the suggestions of kongs, nylabones, hollee rollers (anything made out of that material is awesome...), orbees (AMAZING. SO worth the price. I want one for ME to chew on!), genius leos, etc. Remember - bigger is better. The harder it is for the dog to get their molars on it, the less of a chance the toy will be killed. Also, oddly-shaped toys are usually a hit. Middie loves his nylabone ring and can't really hurt it.
