lol beanie you are going way overboard assuming.
No, actually, I'm just making it out to be as ridiculous as it is, because it's funny and I enjoy humor. The whole thing of thinking yourself better than anybody else for ANY given reason is laughable.

why is it "oh please? Its the truth.
It's not the truth. No dog died because of where I got mine. The other dogs I was looking at were a) in a no kill rescue and were in no real danger of dying. b) would not (except the one) be adopted out to a college student anyways. And c) the dogs in the high kill shelter were not what would fit with me. We get a very small number of toy sized dogs and they are only of a couple breeds which I would not want for various reasons.

If you extrapolate that idea people should only get dogs who are in REAL danger. Which in many 'rescue' cases is not the truth.

No dog will ever be seeing a shelter because of me or because I bought a breeder dog. I do everything possible to keep my dogs from changing homes and ever entering the shelter system. If you do that then you are responsible and helping solve the problem.

and I have had the oposite experience. :)

why is it "oh please? Its the truth.

No..its not. If I couldnt get a dog from a breeder that I liked, I woudlve just..not gotten a dog.

I knew what I wanted, and if I couldnt get that. I would not have a dog. hence why, I DID NOT KILL A DOG

you know whats a great way to kill some dogs tho? Keep guilting people into going to shelters who don't really want to.. some will "OMG I SAVED HIM/HER!" these cute little puppies or dogs that they are not prepared for just because they feel GUILTY, and it will NOT end well for the dogs themselves.

Its not BREEDER vs. RESCUE. we are all DOG LOVERS and you are not better because you adopted yours. Adopting was right for you, it isn't for me. simple as that.

it really does sound that way Crio. Maybe you dont mean it to but shes not exagerating from the way it comes off in the posts.

Seriously by buying a dog once and even a few times does not mean I dont care it just means I want a CERTAIN thing that I cant get from a rescue. I wanted a certain APBT that was going to be the start of my breeding line. At the same time I was doing rescue and IF i had the place and time for a certain rescue APBT I would have rescued her but my mom didnt want her in the house and I supported that. My mom had 2 small dogs along with the 3 big dogs and she was DA. Walker, Patches, and Sci are ALL rescues along with the COUNTLESS fosters we either had personally or through a organization (equals to something over 100) and the 5-10 hours a WEEK i did kennel work for almost 6 years. Yea I think me getting a purebred doesnt discount ANY of that and if it does to someone they can kiss it. I love dogs but I also love my family. You go find me a STABLE Fila in rescue and I will take it (of course when Im ready) Ive looked and looked.

SO whose going to take my kids so I can have a rescue fila?

"I SAVED my dog, a dog DIED because of where you got yours".. oh please..

why is it "oh please? Its the truth.
So if we're going down this route, everyone who has gone through a no-kill shelter or rescue is also contributing to the death toll, because none of those dogs were in danger of dying anytime soon.

By that logic, you might as well come out and say that anyone who does not adopt every one of their dogs from a high-kill shelter is exacerbating the problem.

Is that "the truth" there?

no it isn't, because you can't LIVE at the shelter waiting for just the right dog & there is absolutely no guarantee a compatible dog would have been available the day she contacted the breeder, the day she picked up Romeo or any day in between. not to mention as she already pointed out most rescues (that she had previously dealt with) wouldn't adopt to her do to her current life situation. so really her BEST option was the one she took

also if you take that NONE of the small dogs that come into our shelter are put down unless there's something really really wrong with them. They are all adopted within a few days. The dogs in real danger are large pit bull and lab/hound types. I could not fit those into my life though, it would not have been fair to the dogs.

I've read through this thread multiple times, and have tried to respond, but my internet keeps cutting out for some reason. It seems to be working now though.

I think it's beyond absurd that people have the belief that because I (or anyone else) got a dog from an ethical breeder, that a shelter dog then died. I've had one great rescue experience, and three terrible rescue experiences. Because of those last three, I can't see myself rescuing for a long time, if ever again. My temperament is not cut out to deal with a rescue dog's issues for the most part. There are more issues a rescue can have than aggression, and I just feel more comfortable raising a dog myself than rehabilitating a dog, no matter how great or small that task might be. I'd rather get rid of or prevent problems early on, than have to try and retrain a dog all over again as an adult. I've had more than my fair shair of heartbreaking experiences with dogs over the years, and now I want purebreds from good breeders as a result. I want to know my dog's background inside and out. I want to know that my chances of having my dog live longer than 5 years is great thanks to health testing by his/her breeder. I want to know what my dog's parents' temperaments are like, what their quirks are, etc. I want to know as much as I possibly can about my dog, in order to make absolutely certain I'm getting the right dog for me.

As a house-sitter, I have the opportunity to spend loads of time with all sorts of different kinds of dogs. In doing so, that just makes me appreciate my breeds of choice all the more. There are a lot of breed specific traits I couldn't live with, and therefore, I have a very short list of breeds I will ever consider owning. No dog is going to die in a shelter because I got my dogs (and will continue to get) from good breeders. I don't want a rescue dog, and if I can't have a dog from a good breeder, then I probably wouldn't have a dog at all unless it was a really exceptional rescue. It's not fair to a rescue dog or myself for me to adopt something that isn't going to suit me, no matter how much I might want it to. No dog died because of where I got my dogs either. My breeders both take back any and all dogs they sell, and their dogs would never, ever end up in a shelter.

I love all dogs, but I don't want to and cannot live with all dogs. I commend the people that do rescue -- I think that's wonderful that you're able to do that -- but it's not for me. And I don't feel that those of us who choose to go the breeder route should be knocked down for it, and made out to be lesser people than those that can adopt. I have three dogs from breeders, and will continue to purchase dogs from breeders for the rest of my life, and I will not ever feel guilty about it.

I didn't choose my purebreds based on appearance, either. I chose them based on breed traits that I want and need in a dog. Of course appearance played a part as well, but even if I was adopting a rescue, appearance would play a role there as well. I wouldn't get a dog I didn't like the looks of.

sooo...you dont' think you are a better person than a murderer, or a child molester? Or a thief or a liar? Really? Keep throwing stones. You are obviously on a witch hunt.

you guys are not seeing my POV. Your breeders dogs are not in danger of dying either.

I still fail to see where I said you guys were bad or evil? I think rescue is a better decision. You guys don't. Thats fine.

no, you have now opened up space for them to pull a dog from the kill list. ;)

LMAO.
No. No, I do not think I'm a better person than anybody.

ETA: I'm not sure how I'm "throwing stones" either, or on a witch hunt. You simply stated that you think you're better than other people. I simply stated I think that if you think you're better than other people, that's laughable.
We're both just stating our opinions, right?

I never said the breeder dogs I was looking at were in danger of dying. That's the nice thing about a good breeder, they don't let their dogs get into those kinds of situations.

I'm simply saying the rescues I was looking at were also not in danger of dying. the dogs that actually were in danger of dying (namely pit bulls here) would definitely have been the wrong choice for me.

um, you made fun of me for most of the last two pages.

I actually considered you one of my friends on here. I guess I was mistaken?

I never meant to offend anyone, I was just stating my opinion as is everyone else. Forgive me if my opinion is not in line with the majority on this board...there are other boards where my opinion IS the majority. FWIW. ;) :)

either way, I still hold to my belief that if you are a dog lover, you should help in som' way, since the problem is so huge right now. :)

You simply stated that you think you're better than other people
sorry din't see your edit...where did I say this? I said people that help out are better people than those that do nothing? Are you taking this as a personal jab? have you done nothing?

three breeder bred dogs, a shelter "foster, autumn my $15 best-dog-ever, and daisy, who i got for free off my bf who got her for a bday present @ 16... I also volunteer tons of time and energy for a beagle rescue... as much as i hate to say it, that right there is probably the most true thing you've said all day. we get *hundreds* of email daily for dogs, mostly in KY and OH, who will be put down "Friday because no one wants to work the weekend schedule" (horrifying, I know.) so every one we can get adopted, opens a spot for another. Unfortunately we are a small, private rescue and rely solely on foster homes...

I never personally identified you; from post one I said "some people think they are better." You piped in with "yes I think I am better" upon which I thanked you for making your opinion of me as an owner of a dog that I purchased clear.
Then I teased darkchild. Teasing another member is not "attacking" and it's certainly not attacking you.
You said I was making assumptions about your opinion, and I clarified no, I'm just making it a joke because the whole idea of anybody - again, anybody, not you - thinking themselves better than another is funny. It really has nothing to do with you or your opinion.

You've inserted yourself into the conversation as somebody who has raised their hand and said "I find myself better than those of you who don't rescue," so I can see where you now feel personally attacked. If you had never identified yourself as holding that opinion, we would still be saying the same things, but you likely wouldn't feel personally attacked because you would not have stepped in.

So I'm sorry if you feel personally attacked but it's not you specifically, it's people on the whole that hold the opinion they are better than somebody else because they rescue.
