There is half a turkey sitting on your counter while you and your family sit down in the other room for Thanksgiving dinner. Your dogs are loose. What ensues?

...And go.

My answer is pretty boring. Half a turkey on the counter at the start of dinner equals half a turkey on the counter at the end of dinner. Boo spent most of the dinner lying a few feet away snoozing or lying underneath the table snoozing. She doesn't add much excitement :p

Mia would get the turkey. Dunno how but she would or spend the entire time trying. She ends up on my counters often. Not sure how. She would gorge herself too. She's 8 lbs but has eaten 1.5 lbs of food in a sitting. Looked like a beach ball.

Hank can jump on the counters from the floor. He usually leaves counters alone though.

Summer would be perfect and not even think of getting the turkey.

There would probably be half a turkey on the floor, and a dog running around with the turkey leg. Watson is fine if he's within sight, but all bets are off if we're in another room and there is stuff on the counter within reach.

Nothing.

During family get togethers the dogs are confined to the back hallway during meal times - and by confined I mean closed off by a baby gate that every one of them could jump if they were so inclined.
Ruby is the only one that counter-surfs, but if we're in the proximity (dining room is close to the kitchen), she wouldn't touch it.

There was a time Orson would have either grabbed the turkey or at least given it a few good licks and bites. Now at age 8 1/2, he's pretty well done with the foolishness. He's turned into a distinguished older dude who plays by the rules.

Crowley? Oh yeah..........he'd grab it and run for the hills, chewing and swallowing all the way! LOL

I do not set them up for trouble by leaving food on the counters when they have opportunity to be alone with it. If I can't put the food away (company, festivities, etc) then they are baby gated. Win.

My dogs are LOOSE? Why!?!

If that were the case, Patton would haul it off the counter, then the boys would try killing each other for it. Recon would probably win.

My dogs know their lives wouldn't be worth living if they stole food, so nothing!!! They're not counter surfers.

That's not to say they never have, bodhi has eaten and entire bara brith (which contains raisins) and I once found Fred with a whole gammon ham in his mouth (although I think bodhi framed him). It's just rare!

Gambit would ringlead the turkey grabbing mission. He would eat what he wanted and then leave Gimmick and Quid to take the blame. He's an ass like that.

Felony snatched turkey off of someones plate at the actual table, so she's got them all beat.

As long as the turkey isn't at the edge of the counter, we're good! They don't jump on counters but they're tall enough to nibble at things that are close to the edge. Most things they ignore... a turkey, probably not lol.

Absolutely nothing :p My dog is boring, too. Even if the turkey is on the edge of the counter he would probably just sniff it, cry a little, and then lie down beneath it. If it was dinner time, he'd come beg at the dinner table for easier pickings.

You can eat and have Roxie in your lap at the same time, lol. She won't steal. But I've gotten lazy about making her go lay down in her bed while people eat, so now she usually is all right at your side and poking you with her nose. However, she will go lay down if you tell her to, just... not in her bed, lol. If you tell her to go lay down though, she will stay there until plates need to be licked clean.

There would be a greasy trail from the empty counter to Brisbane's crate, from the dark depths of which would emerge the unholy sound of a dog attempting to simultaneously devour half a turkey while guarding it from every other living being.

Brisbane only counter surfs when he is reasonably certain nobody can hear him. He also occasionally pops up to see what's going on up there when I'm watching because he might be able to get away with it. His greatest achievement was eating an entire 5lb bag of cat food. He weighs 40lbs.

Ditto would be ON the counter, feasting until the turkey was all gone. She wouldn't even have enough shame to act like she was doing anything wrong. She'd be proud. :p

Corvus would leave the turkey. He's always been amazing about leaving food. I can put a plate of steak down two inches from his nose and leave for 20 minutes. When I come back, there may be some drooling going on, and lots of intense staring, but he would leave the steak untouched until I gave him permission.

It would still be there.

Leo does not counter surf. Period.

I have even been super bad and opened him to the possibilities by lifting his front feet to the counter to show a mess that I didn't want to clean up :rofl1:. Even then, he sniffs at it and jumps down again.

Whoever owned him before me taught him well. Or he is just naturally perfect.

Nothing. I can leave plates of food on the floor unattended and trust they won't be touched. This is one of the things about Chalo that I totally take for granted when I visit other people's houses.
