so they found that the pup had consumed some of the body is what I am guessing? But who is to say that happened pre death?

Yes Lilavati it will be interesting and I hope they continue to post updates. Too often the next big story hits and you never hear anything else!

they even say that cause of death is pending, so what happens if they find out he died of something else and pups decided to snack? Then they killed the pup for no reason, they really should have waited...

yeah they should.... I'm sure the cops will come up with some kind of excuse for killing the puppy when they find out it WASN'T him.

ok, so here's a 17 yr old mom who should have been on birth control because she obviously shouldn't have had a kid, and yet they're trying to take that away so MORE things like this start showing up all over the place?

That's terrible. I feel bad for the poor puppy, he had a whole life ahead of him. :< The baby too.

"Finally, somewhere to comment about this most heinous of stories. Animals do not belong inside dwellings that human beings inhabit, unless, of course, one believes that animals equal human beings. Once upon a time it was mostly childless couples who invested their love, time, and money to dogs and cats. Increasingly, with the age of affluency and individuals consciously refraining from having children, dogs and cats became the center of their universe, with this type of thinking now filtering down to all classes. Someone asked once, "Would you allow me, naked, having just defecated, to loll on your furniture, bedding, carpets, etc.?" Good question. Ever really just stood in the supermarkets looking at the shelves of animal food? Unbelievable, while there are hungry children. Aside from all this, there is a two-month-old baby boy, dead, needlessly. With everything happening in our world today, this story out of all jars my senses and sensibilities."

I was reading through the comments on one of the articles, and that just appalled me.

Quotes like that irk me too, tx. There are dying children in other countries because those countries have crappy leaders (among other things) not because Americans or anyone else has pets.

But that's another thread.

I'm glad to run across this thread- I've also been fascinated/horrified at this story. It also seems pretty unlikely to me, though not impossible.

One thing I did notice the first time that I watched a video showing the puppy is that the puppy was not a labrador. I don't know what it was. It was black, fuzzy around the ears and with a fairly pointy nose. It did not appear to be 6 weeks old, I'd say more like 10. This inaccurate reporting makes me question the rest of the story. I wonder in the end how much of this will prove to be non sense, especially the pup's age.

However, whatever the age of this pup, I have to disagree with these statements:

Somebody had better get their weeks in puppies correct, a six week old if with the litter and momma. He mentally would have no capacity to know even to maul or even eat raw meat if given first time.
My six week old malinois were biting a rag hard enough to support their own body weight for extended periods (1+ minute) and were eating chicken necks, if somewhat slowly and ineffectively. I don't think it's only mal pups that can do this at this age. Here are some more:

It just completely goes against the behavior of any puppy; even a badly bred, badly socialized puppy will be startled by shrill cries.
I have seen and trained many puppies that escalated in the face of screaming or crying out. Of course, I know this bc so many dog training books recommend this as a technique to stop biting. I don't care if the dog is "badly" bred or not, some of them have enough prey drive to like the sound of an animal in distress. A baby crying and ineffectively struggling could incite some puppies to greater aggression.

My question is, how does the puppy manage to kill? I get biting. But is it really possible for one to cause enough damage to kill? Babies do have very delicate skin. Is it possible the pup got a main artery and the baby bled to death?

If the puppy killed the baby, that's the ONLY way I can think of for it to happen. ANd yes, the puppy is older, and that was corrected in later news articles . . . somewhere between 8-12 weeks. As for it not being a lab . . . it looks pretty "labby" to me, though its quite possible its a mix. Its hard to tell at that age, especially in a crappy video (and I've seen are stills, anyway).

And Reggin, that's been my suspicion from the beginning.

It looked awfully small for a twelve week old puppy . . . The police officer was carrying it with one hand/arm in the video, I know I wouldn't have been able to do that when my lab/border collie mix was twelve weeks. Eight weeks I could see . . .

Baby's family wants pets returned

By NICOLE MARSHALL World Staff Writer

The pug and two cats were taken from a home where a baby was killed, apparently by a puppy.

A pug and two cats that were taken from a home where a puppy apparently killed an infant will be returned to the baby's family.

Two-month-old Zane Earles died Monday at his home in the 2900 block of East 102nd Street, Tulsa Police Officer Leland Ashley said.

The black Labrador retriever puppy, which Tulsa Animal Shelter Manager Jean Letcher described as nearly 3 months old, was euthanized at the request of the police.

Now detectives are trying to determine what might have led the dog to bite the child.

"The Lab puppy was euthanized to recover evidence, and there was physical evidence recovered from the dog," Ashley said.

Based upon the available evidence, he said, "at this time, it appears to be a tragic accident."

The cause and manner of Zane's death remain pending; it could be several weeks before all of the tests are conducted and a report is completed, state Medical Examiner's Office spokesman Randy Saffell said.

Police have declined to release details about the baby's injuries; however, they were significant enough that he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The pug, which Letcher described as a middle-aged dog, was not involved in the baby's death, according to police.

Officials have received several calls about its possible adoption.

But Letcher said the family wants the pug back, as well as the two cats.

Pending police approval, the animals will be returned to the family.

The father of the baby, who recently moved into the household, told police that he left the home at 8 a.m., and the grandfather said he left at 8:30 a.m.

They told investigators that the baby was fine when they left, Ashley said.

Initial reports indicate that the baby's mother, who is 17, and grandmother were sleeping in their bedrooms on the west side of the house and that the baby was in a baby swing in a dining room on the east side of the house, according to police.

Family members have declined interviews and have not returned telephone calls.

Police have not identified them by name.

A death notice identifies Zane's parents as Linzy Earles and Tyler Ogden. Linzy Earles' parents are Stanley and Holly Earles, according to court and public records.

Our dog is a lab/australian shepherd mix and my then-eleven year old dd carried her easily in one arm at 10 and 12 weeks old. She (the dog) is not that big though. At 1 yr now she is just under 50 lbs.
