HUNDREDS of dogs being trucked to Chinese restaurants were spared a culinary fate after about 200 animal lovers mobilised to stop them ending up on dinner tables.

A truck crammed with the dogs was forced to stop on a highway in eastern Beijing by a motorist who swerved his car in front of the vehicle then used his microblog to alert animal rights activists, reports said.

The dogs, many apparently stolen from their owners, were being transported from the central Chinese province of Henan to restaurants in Jilin province in the northeast, the China Daily said. It said 430 dogs were rescued, while the Global Times put the number at 520.

Eventually, about 200 animal lovers and activists gathered around the truck in eastern Beijing during Friday's drama - and after a 15-hour standoff that jammed traffic the dogs were freed early on Saturday when an animal protection group purchased them for 115,000 yuan ($17,600), the Global Times said.

This story is saying they were all bought legally. If their were thousands of people why didn't they just take the dogs and run instead of buying them back. Hopefully they get good homes.

Those pictures are absolutely heartbreaking and mind boggling. Just like the double deckers we have for livestock being shipped - but full of dogs? Hard to imagine seeing that on the highway.

I'm glad they rescued them.

Those poor dogs. Those conditions look horrible.

That said if it was being done legally and they weren't abusing the dogs.. well I eat cows so I couldn't condemn another culture for eating dogs.

Same here Dekka - while it would be an awfully strange experience to witness a big trailer of dogs on the highway, I can't really hold the consuming of dogs against them.

That said, I'm against poor conditions and poor management of animals being shipped (or otherwise) whether they're dogs, cows, pigs or horses. I remember watching a program on TV where a country in Europe (REALLY wish I could remember who it was specifically) regularly inspected cows and other livestock who were being shipped. It was amazing! All the animals were healthy, had ample room, and I'm pretty sure they either had water on the trailer or were stopped frequently and allowed to drink. I'm pretty sure there's a law here that the animals can only be on the trailer for x amount of hours and then you have to let them rest and drink, but you know that's not the actual case.

I agree. What made me sad about that blog was the condition the animals were kept in. Poor things.
