May have found my new dog

Let us know how it goes with Niobe, it's great that you're adopting a dog from a shelter. Good luck and keep us updated! ;)

    Cockers?

Absolutely, generally the more 'popular' a breed gets the more irresponsible breeders get involved, and genetics tend to go downhill fairly rapidly.

    Nilif

I think it's a great way to live with a dog, more important for some breeds than others. Dogs need to know what's expected of them in order to be comfortable and unstressed, rules=stability and stable dogs are happy dogs.

    Finally a happy story

Wow, thanks for sharing that story! The things dogs do sometimes are truly amazing...I had my life saved by a dog when I was a toddler and it left an impression that has never ever left me (I think it 'imprinted' me on GSDs for life). Hitch is definitely a dog to be proud of!

    pawing and jumping up

Sorry to jump in, but The Dog Listener: Learn How to Communicate with Your Dog for Willing Cooperation by Jan Fennell talks extensively about amchien bonding. I'm not sure if it's the one Shadow the Staff was referring to, but it is a great book, really insightful. Of course no training theory...

    All this talk of Strawberries!

My grandparents had a Dalmatian that once stole a watermelon from their picnic table and at the ENTIRE thing.

    Strawberries

I agree about natural grown produce on small farms...even the biggest reddest strawberries from a store don't even begin to compete with a nice sun-ripened, "home made" berry! We're moving this summer and I'm really sad about leaving our berry bushes and fruit trees behind...our baby peach...

    Dogs and Small kids?

I really really wish all parents would take the time to teach their kids appropriate behavior with animals, it would cut down on so many injuries (both human and canine) and incidents of families taking their dog to the pound...

    Hi from the Pacific Northwest

Hey Dogaroo, nice to see you here! And I think your family of 'fixer upper models' is definitely something to be proud of! :)

Good luck and good for you on calling the breeder! I know it may take some courage, but definitely stand your ground, you're doing the right thing.

Hi! What is your dog's name?

My dog is a GSD named Charlie, and there's a bit of a story to it, lol. Have you ever seen the movie "All Dogs Go to Heaven"? The girl in that movie is named Anne-Marie, I always got a kick out of that when I was a kid because it's my name too and it's uncommon to find someone else with it...

Hi! What is your dog's name?

I think Dakotah said in another post that those aren't her dogs.

    Please Help stop the whaling

I don't want to get involved in the debate over conservationism, just felt the need to chime in with the fact that whales are not fish, I think the reason they garner so much attention is their rarity and also the fact that they're amazingly intelligent mammals, peple find them much more...

    Looking for an Australian Shepherd?

I'd recommend putting a local ad in the paper or seeing if a local vet has a bulletin board for things like that, Dakotah, so you can at least meet with the potential adopters and visit their house before you hand your dog over to them.

    Dogs on Dateline?

I saw about the first five minutes of it but had to go to work (missed the dog program to work at kennels, lol), I wish I'd been able to see more of it, they usually don't rerun Dateline programs, do they?

Caitlin took the words out of my mouth. There's a difference in being 'mean' and offering realistic advice.

    sumbissive/fearful issues including biting

I work for a vet and the majority of the rat terriers and chihuahuas we see have fear-biting issues, especially when they're separated from their owners. It sounds like you're a great owner and are doing a good job of recognizing that this is an important issue to address. Have you tried to...

    Cockers?

I had an American cocker and LOVED the little guy to pieces! They are a breed where you MUST go through a very well-established breeder, because they have been so overbred and it has resulted in a LOT of health problems, with eyes, skin, ears, etc...vets get dollar signs in their eyes when they...
