    Citronella collar experiences?

My only experience is second hand. A friend's BC is really noisy in her crate, so she tried a citronella collar. Her dog learned that the citronella supply is limited, so she would go into barking frenzies to empty it out, then go back to her normal vocalizations.

Breed choice for lost pet tracking

Thanks -- Rook is such a sweetie. She melts everyone she meets (now that strangers aren't something to bolt from.) There is a place near me that has had hoarding issues for decades, and every few years it gets enough public outcry for something to be done. The dogs alternate between being in...

Breed choice for lost pet tracking

I have to say, I gained a new perspective on the breed after discovering this FB page: https://www.facebook.com/working.smooth/ LOVE those dogs! Most seem bigger than my preference, but a bitch on the small side would fit well. And wouldn't Rook look cute with a collie sibling? :D

    The dog musing/vent thread

The dogs still at Rook's old home were out when I drove by to check yesterday. I'm always gut-punched by how bittersweet it is to see them. None look injured, and they aren't starving anymore. But I heard there have been pups again, so we'll see how long it takes this time. Sigh. I love...

Breed choice for lost pet tracking

I do like smooth collies. I'm not sure if they are exactly what I want in all arenas, but I'm sure they could get the searching jobs done. They seem like nice dogs. In trying to find a potential herder that works for me I've been reading up on Kelpies lately. I think Koolies would be...

Breed choice for lost pet tracking

Thank you all for the input and help. I think I may end up leaning more toward a herder, but it would have to be just the right one, so it could be a long hunt if I go that route. Rook has traits of all the breeds in her, and I'm finding myself enjoying the herder traits, but probably because...

    Immediately off-putting

I've heard this happens more often with black dogs because it is harder for other dogs to read their faces. Could be a combination of things, but not having others of his breed around, so he becomes a strange new element to local dogs, can't help.

What is your dog's favorite breed?

If you dog could choose your Nextdog, what would it be? Zoe only tolerates Rook, so I can't really list a vote from her. She hates bouncy and fast, especially spaniels and a particular BC, but there's no breed that she thinks is a-okay overall. Rook LOVES Chihuahuas. I'm not sure if she...

Breed choice for lost pet tracking

Oh man, now my WPG research has led me to the Pudelpointer. They are gorgeous! It looks like they got a bit of a slimmer build from the poodle. I'd have to explain a million times to people that it's not a designer breed, though. I wonder how they compare to the WPG.

Breed choice for lost pet tracking

Thanks for the input. I wanted to see initial reactions and thoughts before yammering about my own ideas. :) I've definitely looked into Beagles. They seem like really fun little dogs, and there are some breeders still hunting with their dogs and actively breeding for more than just...

    Halloween is around the corner

I bought Rook a nice holiday-themed tug toy with stuffies attached, and she eviscerated them before we even hit October. Does that count?

Breed choice for lost pet tracking

I would like to get into lost pet tracking with my next dog. I already help with some local volunteers in difficult cases running live traps, feed stations, game cameras, etc. I would eventually like to make a business out of it, but doing so may not be viable in my current community. In any...

Starting up an animal control facility?

I am in a small town in Alaska. We have city animal control, but MANY people live outside of city limits, and there is none there. Rook is actually from a neglect situation that happened to be on the wrong side of the road for it to be in city limits, thus no animal control, and State Troopers...

    Roxie

I am so sorry you lost your soul mate. I know this is a bit late, but I read that the euthanasia didn't go well, and I wanted to tell you that I can relate. I had a negative experience due to the oral sedative my vet prescribed when my 20yo cat was pts. I thought the agony over it not going as...

    The dog musing/vent thread

Started Zoe on chemo yesterday for the **** soft tissue sarcoma that returned twice now despite clean margins. There is no option for radiation up here. We're doing a low dose, and stopping if it causes any side effects due to other factors, but it feels wrong to feed her something I have to...

    Do you have a favorite?

Zoe is my favorite of all my pets, not just my dogs. By far. She is my heart, and my first dog, and has taught me so much in so many ways. My introduction to dog sports, and all the friends that have come with that. We are so connected and she is everything I wanted and everything I didn't but...

    The dog musing/vent thread

Zoe is in a cone until the end of the month. Her corneal ulcer we've been working on healing for the past two months continued to not quite work itself out, so her third eyelid is sewn over as a patch for three weeks. And... her soft tissue sarcoma is back again, after two surgeries which...

    Stacked Dogs

(Not exactly stacked, but she thinks posing for pics is torture. This is her sniffing the breeze during her 12th birthday walk.) Zoe Breed: Pit Bull/Great Dane? Age: 12.5 years Sex: Spayed female (at 6 months, a fun pairing with her terrible structure... TPLO on the left at 4yo) Weight...

    The dog musing/vent thread

Vent: Rook's right rear leg is having a ton of issues and I am 95% sure we need to go with amputation at this point, which further complicates my efforts to get her in a custom mobility cart. The vet warned me she'd be likely to struggle with pressure ulcers eventually, but wound care is...

    The Venting Thread

You definitely can't do technical hikes with them, but I'm not sure why running would be an issue if she's strong in the front and has the mental desire. I can't keep up with Rook when she gets going, and she has zero use of her body from the waist down. That said, if you are in a position to...
