Some dogs and or cats are sensative to telazol, acepromazine, or even dormitor. Find out what it is your dog has a reaction to and request that specific medication not be used.

the way i've seen it done is they use a tourniqit (sp?) to stop blood flow, put lidocane in the nerves to numb each digit, then clip off the first digit with a special "clipper" used only for declawing cats, then superglue it shut, put gauze and vet wrap on it for 2 days then remove the bandage...

Our cat came already declawed, she's about 10 or older now too. This is kind of like tail docking or ear cropping to me, I'm not against it but I don't think it's necessary in every case.

they do make small bites puppy food. save yourself the hassle! and do give a chew toy for those growing teeth, nylabones a safe too and last a long time, there are chew hides that have a dental additive in them too.
