That was compiled from ALL shelters. Naturally some will have more than others. And that would probably include purebred dogs pulled by Breed Rescues so no need to even make that an issue with the totals.

Pet overpopulation is not about over breeding so much as it is about irresponsible pet owners and feral strays. Just how many breeders are dumping THEIR dogs into pounds and shelters? The purebreds are probably the luckier ones in that there are breed rescues to pull them out.

We get in about ten litters of puppies a day, not even counting the endless cats and adult dogs. Though I must say, it is a MUCH bigger problem down here than in the north.

French , as this whole thread is completely asinine , it wasn't worth my post ing until you said " if people want a purebred , where do they go ? " To a reputable breeder of their desired breed through their local breed CLUB!! I had people wait over a year for one of mine or for a litter sired by by male . My daughter waited over 7 months for her Golden ...next state . Unless through HS or rescue , a pup takes as long if not longer than conceiving a child . Internet selling is the same as an ad in the newspaper . It spells ... have pups and no buyers .

ok so

shelter one has 20 dogs put down
shelter two has 1 dog put down

jsut because one didn't have to put more than one down means that there isn't a problem at all?that's sick.

I have rescued numerous danes from death row at shelters who were dumped by breeders. They don't sell, they get big and expensive to feed and house, so the breeder dumps them. Just because you don't know about it doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

Also, crappy breeders that don't enforce spay/neuter contracts or sell responsibly are therefore passing on dogs that will in the future create MORE pets who will likely end up in shelters or dead.

Purebreed rescues can only take in so many dogs. Pure bred dogs DO die in shelters. Daily.

And unless you've held a shelter dog as it takes it's last breath, don't talk to me about overpopulation.

ONE homeless dog is one too many.

Really than what was that post by you on USAbreeders as fluff about USDA?
And you avoided my other questions on the pup pens didn't you?

I am not sure which post you are reffering to PM it to me and I will let you know.

I didn't see you question about the pup pens. I will go back and look.

What's even worse is all the "repeaters." There's this one guy who keeps dumping off boxer puppies on us because they don't sell. When we asked him why he won't fix his female, he responded that she was his "bread and butter." I see his ads in the paper all the time. It's sick =(.

I have a question for you FK, if you were so proud of those rabbit hutches you built for all your Golden pups why did you remove them from your forum? After all it made it so you didn't have to bend over to care for them. And so easy when the poop and pee just drop through the bottom.

I cleaned a lot of photos off of my photo bucket account to make room for others. And yes. I have raised puppy pens for when they are old enough to go outside. I don't believe in putting puppies in the dirt and concrete is just to hard on their little feet. My concrete exercise areas are brushed.
My "rabbit" hutches as you call them were made from X-pens with a PVC floor (not a wire floor like the standard central metal puppy pens like many breeders use).
It was not about "bending over" to care for them. It was quite simply better for them to be raised up so that you can get to them better to care for them and see anything that might be going on. When you are worming puppies and vaccinating puppies, its easier to reach them. Having them up off the ground keeps them from eating their poop (which goldens will do without hesitation) it also starts them on house breaking. They also learn not to be afraid being up high, which if you show, you are going to have them on a grooming table. I use those cages for all of two weeks from the time they go out until they go home.
I have the exact same design except larger and lower to the ground, for bigger puppies that I am training or growing out.

The average pet owner today(still) does not know anything about the existence of clubs. They look in the news paper, the magazines, the internet ads....they do not go looking at the clubs.
FWIW I DO go through my national club and local. They just don't get very many requests for information or breeders at all.
If the good breeders are not making themselves available, then they only have themselves to blame when some one purchases a puppy at the pet store.

So rather than educate pontential owners, IE pointing them towards clubs, you exploit them.

After all if you gave them information on responsible breeding you would lose sales.

I send people to clubs all the time. I pay for a yellow page ad that covers the state of GA. This is not cheap, in fact, it's pretty costly. This ad is located in the "dog breeders" section. I get calls, from all over the country, as well as GA about this ad. People ask me for an assortment of breeds. Where do you think I refer them? The local and national clubs.
The mentality that good breeders cannot advertise on the mass marketed sites is exactly why people can't find good breeders. Hobby/Professional Breeders need to realize that they are in competition with the large commercial breeders. While they might have great dogs, great ethics, great ideals, the public cannot and will not know this unless they are out there where they can be seen. If you are not out there showing the world what a well bred correct temperamented dog looks like then how are they supposed to know.
