Do poodles always look like this:

or is all of that a specific clip?

My neighbor has a dog, that looks almost just like a maltese, and she says he is a french poodle. Is that just what they look like if they aren't clipped?

I've never heard of a "French Poodle" =/

That cut right there looks like a puppy cut. If I ever own a poodle it will be cut like that.

My grooming instructor had two toy Poodles who were kept in long coats and they did look much like Maltese. She used them as demos so we could learn how to blow out a poodle coat straight.

Looks like either a puppy clip or a lamb clip. And yes, their coats gets fluffy when drying them. Either from drying and brushing or using a high velocity dryer.

So if you don't blow them out at all, their coat stays curly? Is there any reason most people don't do that? Is it just a breed standard thing, or is a clip better for them for some reason?

Yes, it stays curly and if you don't keep up with brushing it or getting him clipped every 5 to 6 weeks he'll start look shabby. This dog was just bathed and blown dry, it looks nice for the first week but then it starts to curl up. I'd love to say my dogs looked that way all the time but they don't. And if a person doesn't like a certain clip on their poodle then it's an easy fix. That's the great thing/worst thing about poodles and their coats, it grows back. They don't care what they look like.

Even most poodle in show clips get shaved down after they are done their show career.

No such thing as a "french poodle". Poodles are in fact a German breed and are just called "Poodles".

The term "french poodle" is a common one with people who don't know much about dog breeds. I've heard it MANY times down here in Australia.

Poodle coats are amazing, I've seen some incredible haircuts and the corded Poodles look gorgeous. :D

Oops yes, the first picture is of a Puli, but the poodles coat would pretty much similar. For someone who seems very naive when it comes to poodles clips and coats sure knew what a puli was. humm? *scratches head* lol

A lady on another message board that I go to (for moms) has posted pictures of her Puli that she had when she was growing up. She says they are the best dogs she's ever come across and she can't wait to buy a house so she can have one of her own.

I swear I really am this naive! I have been looking into dog breeds for almost a year now, trying to learn as much about them as I can, so I just try to remember what people tell me.

Are puli's rare? I'd never heard of them until this other gal mentioned them.

In the Gromming competitions - Poodles are almost always #1 ... Their coats are just AWESOME to work with. I also adored grooming Bichons in a "show clip"! :) SO MUCH FUN!

personally, i like standards that don't have their face totally shaved, and have a much more even/casual type of cut. i am not a big fan of the more formal clips, or the poofy-eared pet cuts. uncle has a black standard and keeps him fairly evenly in a modified puppy cut and he is gorgeous. the last link, i believe, is what will happen to a poodle if you just let them go.

Oh my goodness...the last unclipped one is STUNNING!!! I'm in love!! :D:D:D:D Now I'm wondering why on earth anyone would ever dream of clipping a poodle at all (although all that fur would take some grooming for sure LOL).
