Hey, my staffy mix has terrible noise anxiety to the rain. We have tried everything- thunder jackets, the collars she wears to make her feel better & training. None has worked, so we went to the vet and she prescribed us fluoxetine/Prozac. Peggy’s been on it for 6 days now and I feel like I have lost my dog, she’s so lethargic and uninterested in everything. I have read that this is a common side effect and to wait it out as Prozac doesn’t work straight away. Has anyone else had these problems ?

Could it be the dosage? I understand that too low a dose of medications like this can cause worse fatigue.

My vet contacted me and said she thinks the dose was to high so I have been given 10mg now as she’s only 28lbs

Hopefully that helps.
Sometimes it can be tricky to find just the right dose for an individual dog.

Yes, like with people, gotta play around with different meds to determine what works the best for your dog. My vet recently prescribed trazodone for my dog because he bit my new neighbor (didn’t know long story), but in any event is is an aging dog and has extreme anxiety. These meds will sedate the dogs significantly. All you can do is ask the vet to adjust the dosage or maybe if they can try another drug, don’t know if they prescribe Xanax (I think they do for dogs), in that way you only have to give to him when necessary not every do. Good luck!

I've got the other case. My dog (spitz, 6 years, male) was diagnosed alopecia X. The vet offered us these options no treatment or using Melatonin. He claims that the method is not very effective, but very safe. I don't know what to do, there are so many side effects even for people, not to mention a small dog! Can anyone help me with advise? May be there are some ointments?

Just like people antidepressants and anti-anxiety meds need to be adjusted for the dog, however that type of antidepressant will definitely calm him down is the date him so if your vet won't adjust the dosage then I would find another way to keep him down. Do you exercise him extremely well.if that's the only time your dog shows extreme anxiety I surely would not drug him with antidepressants and anxieties I don't think it's fair to the dog
