When I do individual training the others go into crates with Kongs or bully sticks or other wonderful things. Sometimes they need to be crated in another room with the door shut before they can properly enjoy their goody, but the result is that no one is stupid-barking about being left out.
Leaving him upstairs in a room (where he can't hear me praising Rara LOL) with a big treat would actually be a good idea... I'm not sure how willing he is to stay there, because he might abandon the treat once I close the door. Just being velcro to humans is pretty high on his value scale. But I'll try this, thank you!

Yes, this or another task if they don't perch yet. At my house it's down-stays. Bonus is that both dogs are actually training, although be prepared for a lot of replacing at first.
Oh man, I don't think he will down stay or perch at all LOL. If I'm even just calling Rara's name, he'll be the first one to charge at me to get to me before Rara to even just push her away and PREVENT her from getting any attention at all, even when he wasn't originally seeking attention himself (he's that kind of dog XD ). I think some kind of solution to keep him somewhere closed off and far away enough that he can't hear me even interacting with Rara is the only way for Lancer, or something very extreme that's very very high on the value scale. Just big treats but staying in the same vicinity isn't quite enough for him.

His top "value" things are pretty much:
- my dad
- me
- preventing Rara from getting attention, especially if it's attention from me or my dad. If my mom is with Rara, it's okay. LOL
- fetch with tennis balls

Ok, I totally just tried this and it was a miserable frustrating failure for all involved. I might be going too fast, or not rewarding often enough, or maybe my dogs just aren't as well trained as yours.

"A lot of replacing":

Put Dog A in down-stay.
Turn to Dog B. Replace Dog A.
Say Dog B's name. Replace Dog A.
Turn to Dog B. Replace Dog A.
Say Dog B's name. Replace Dog A.
Tell Dog B to sit. Replace Dog A.
Tell Dog B to sit. Replace Dog A.
Tell Dog B to down. Replace Dog A.
Turn to Dog B. Replace Dog A.
Tell Dog B to sit. Replace Dog A.

Apparently I never proofed Brisbane's down-stay with me interacting with another dog. Uly...doesn't yet understand the concept of down-stay. Or staying down. Or not popping up immediately after getting a reward, despite many, many attempts to rapid-fire treats while he's on the floor. He's kind of special.

Yup, that's pretty much what it was like at first, lol.

I mean, I wouldn't expect a dog who doesn't even understand the basic concept of a down-stay to learn or hold a down-stay with such a big distraction so close, talk about setting a dog up to fail. Not fair at all IMO.

But for a dog with a foundation, holding the down stay while another dog trains nearby is really just proofing the stay against distractions, and they should get better at it with practice just like anything else you increase distractions with.

It's pretty typical for Cajun to start getting antsy and noisy around 4-5am. IT'S ALMOST TIME TO EAT. I ignore her but that's never resulted in her being quiet, so this time when she carried on and on with it... aside from being annoyed I didn't give it a second thought. Until I heard the horrifying sound of pee hitting the floor.

THIS DOG. if you didn't cry wolf nearly every morning I would've let you out!! That's what I get I guess for doing a before bed training session and letting her have water after. Ugh.

Now, instead of being annoyed at Cajun....

We were at the park today playing frisbee, there's a hill on one side of the field we play in and as we were playing, a couple people came riding down the hill on bikes and came RIGHT into our space. Before I even noticed them, Cajun went charging at them barking... BUT she stopped herself short instead of actually going all the way up to them, promptly came back when I called her, and then watched them from a down position while they rode away.

Maybe it's wrong of me but I kind of appreciate that behavior. She did this once before when someone walked by our house at night, when we were playing in the yard - same thing, she ran at them barking but didn't actually get close to them, and was really good about coming back to me.

She apparently has set standards for when "protection mode" seems warranted to her, or maybe the bikes were weird to her, because people frequently appear at this park when we're playing and she doesn't care. They also usually don't get so close to us either, though.

Today we had a visit from a trainer-behaviorist to help evaluate Uly's potential for adoption. We had the temporary foster pups out for a potty break, and were both commenting on how well he was doing with them, when one of them popped up between me and Uly. He reacted by latching onto my arm and shaking.

No punctures this time, just a huge bruise and some wide gouges that are still oozing hours later. The trainer thinks this bite was in line with all the others, he only bites in situations that involve other animals or babies. It's definitely not helping his status as an adoptable dog, though.

I just want dogs that will shut up while I train another one. Is that so much to ask? :(

My yard is a mud puddle so I can't let them outside to get worn out, but I can't train inside either because they can't hear me over each other. :(

Happy news! After 16 months of waiting at the dog rescue, our longest resident Elvis has been adopted! His favorite volunteer finally caved in and decided to adopt him. What a wonderful Christmas present for them both!

Ugh with Lincoln ignoring his fits only helped so much ... the other evening when it was time to eat, I was fixing food (there is 5 dogs here with my 2 so it takes a while lol) and he decided that if he barked and carried on thst I would go faster, uh ... NO. After ignoring it a bit, it was clear it wasn't going to stop, so I marched right in there and tapped the door of his crate and gave him a very gruff "NO SIR!" With a stern, hands-on - hips stare, and he quieted down.

Although Abrams has been super annoying on this trip and feels the need to bark at All the Noises and cry when he has to be in a room away from me, I've been pleasently surprised with his dog/dog behavior. He's even getting along with (re: deffering) to grumpy old Chloe who growls at him every time he goes near her.

Which makes me happy, especially after he decided Sherman needs to fall off a cliff.

We had doggy christmas last night. Mia's reaction to getting a bag of tennis balls inside wrapping paper never fails to amuse.

TENNIS BALLS!?

FOR ME??????

BEST. DAY. EVER.

I love that nutty little dog.

I am sooo happy to have such an adaptable dog!

I've been sick with a really bad stomach flu all day. Like really really bad, constantly sick for hours on end stomach flu. Leo has been such a champ despite the "neglect". His day went as following: I dragged myself out of bed , fed Leo, and put him in the backyard by himself for several hours (not really planned, but once he was out there I couldn't get myself out of bed to let him back in). Eventually, I dragged myself out of bed once more and let him back inside. I have not interacted with him much at all, and he has been content to just sleep and do nothing all day long. Zero bugging me with a toy. Zero whining. Zero negative attention getting behavior. He has slept and let me sleep. So thankful :hail:

It doesn't sound like he's doing it on purpose. I have had dogs at the shelter redirect on me on my leg going after another dog walking them outside past the other dog kennels. I never thought they did it on purpose they just get so worked up.

This is more of a human-behavior-around-dogs rant than a dog rant, but my little cousin (11) was fixing to get her face bit off by Crystal.

Crystal loves kids, but she, like every dog in the world, does have a snapping point, and my cousin WOULD NOT understand that. She kept pulling on Crystal and messing with her when she had made it obvious that she wanted to be left alone. I told her repeatedly, "please don't pull on her, she doesn't like it," and other nice reminders until finally I got fed up and yelled, "if you don't stop you're gonna leave the house needing stitches!" She obeyed for about thirty seconds before following Crystal (who was eating dinner) and started standing over her and pushing her. Crystal then (luckily) air snapped and growled, and my cousin is so lucky she didn't get her face ripped off. She left her alone for about thirty minutes before messing with Crystal again. Luckily, they left before Crystal got too fed up again but Jeez, she needs to learn how to leave the poor dog alone.

I think I'd have just put her in a bedroom or something

Who? The cousin? :p

In all seriousness, we did put Crystal in my dad's office multiple times but we weren't going to leave her in there the whole time. At some point my cousin needs to learn how to respect animals, anyways.
