With school my training time is kind of nill... So what I want to be doing and what we're actually doing aren't always the same. LOL.

What I want to be doing is focusing on Rally & Agility as I'm hoping to get as much trialing in as possible this coming year(my couple trials this fall were soooo much fun!). We're also working on herding, but that is at a slower pace.

What we mostly end up doing is rebound & shin stalls along with chasing rollers when I have daylight avail. These things are the most effective way to chill him out when I need to study.

Break is coming up in a few weeks so hopefully I can maximize my non-study-like-psycho time with more diverse training. HaHa.

Schen is learning the basics. He has sit and down mostly down pat (which is impressive considering how little time I have had time to train) We are starting to work on a formal heel. We will be doing obed classes starting in January.

I've been working on polishing up a "hop up" cue for Cohen for use outside on our walks. I live in the 'burbs and there are no sidewalks, and sometimes I walk Cohen off leash. Hop up means for her to stop whatever she's doing, orient to me to figure out which side of the road I'm gesturing to, and then run to the grass and lay down until I release her. Just another little bit of off-leash control to add to the library.

Other than that, tricks tricks and more tricks. Since it's so dark so early our walks have been cut down to about nothing, so we work on tricks instead. Stalls, catches, targeting, etc to pass the time and drain a small portion of her boundless energy.

I just finished student teaching and now have like... 3 weeks off of school and work before my license comes in and I can start substitute teaching. So Hugo and I are going to be seriously working on his verbal control outside. He tends to get fairly easily distracted and disconnect from me. We're working through CU and I'm seeing improvement. We're also working on his ability to settle around other dogs. He gets so excited that it can take him more than an hour to settle down and act like himself.

Plus TRICKS. It gets dark a little before 6 and I'm a cold wuss so he's getting less exercise than normal. Current trick: orbit and cross paws. Still on paw targeting. He's pretty awful at it, clumsy boy : p

Cajun is working on settling down and not being a whiny, temper tantrum throwing brat.
Which isn't something I even realized was a problem, until recently when I had her tethered to me while I was sitting at the computer, and she was like nooooo mom nooooo I'm dyyyyiiiinnnggggg.

So guess what dog, now we are practicing this EVERY DAY. :D
(And through that practice, I am finding other scenarios where she likes to throw tantrums).

My goal is simple. I guess I don't necessarily need her to "settle." I just want her to learn to deal with things and not pitch a fit with loud, sad sounds when she can't have what she wants.

This is our no-no behavior (I understand there is a bowl of cat food sitting there, but that's not our issue lol)

I've also been working on her handstand more, and then just obedience, focusing stuff.

I haven't done any new stuff with Juno lately. Last thing we attempted was a foot rebound but I put that on the back burner when we weren't making much progress. Maybe I should see where she's at with that now that it's had time to stew in her brain :D

Gambit quit growling at the neighbors. Gambit quit growling at the neighbors. Gambit quit growling at the neighbors. The same thing we've been working on for two years. Gambit quit growling at the neighbors.

My primary goal right now is heeling. I finally have a heel that I like, so I need to keep the energy up even when the treats disappear. I'd like to enter our first Rally trial in the spring and he has the skills, so it's ring prep time.

I'm also plugging away at a retrieve, but I've been stuck for a while. He knows how to bring toys back, but with the dumbbell I've taught him to pick it up and throw it down again for a reward - I just can't get the hold. I think I need to set it aside until the retrieve class comes back to Fenzi Academy because I need some help.

I need to do some trick training again. For so long I wanted to focus on heeling but I think we need to start something else from scratch. I just can't decide what I'd most like to work on.

Can't get enough of winter trick time.

It doesn't seem to tire out my dog the way I would like. But, hey, fun.

40 pound wrecking ball of a dog. 1 foot. :)

Mainly wraps and generalizing tracking/article criteria and combining the two with easier criteria.

Still plugging away at working through the homework from last term's Creative Cues class. Mainly working on building fluency in sit/down/stand and the chains of heeling and retrieve.

Lots of IYC as always. :)

A thought, after watching that video, I would make it easier for her to succeed at this and slowly work up to the full food bowl thing. Like really easy IYC/zen with one piece of food in your hand and slowly work up. Layers are your friend. She's telling you its too arousing for her to succeed at that step right now. :)

If it makes you feel better, Scout still leaks like that even when she makes good choices in an overstimulating situation. Terrible noises while choosing to fuss if the other leashed dog is 50ft or closer. Just too much for her with a strange dog, but if its one she knows is always leashed we can pass closer. Its getting better. I try to click any second of silence and its slowly building. She can't help leaking when its that overstimulating.

Lily used to throw verbal fits a lot too. I started paying her for quiet and self control and it went away fast. I was skipping to the end on certain things which wasn't fair to her and caused conflict. Part of my problem too was that it makes me laugh when they are opinionated jerks, lol.

With her it's just being tethered when she doesn't want to. The bowl of food just happens to be there but she responds that way even when nothing is there lol. She's vocal and opinionated and... a brat :p

We are working on a million different things - finally back in lessons, and loving it! Lots of great foundation stuff that I should have done the first time. Some of it is HARD for Gusto, because he over-thinks and over-tries and just makes a muddle out of simple stuff.

One of the things that the puppies in our group were working on was the perching/finding heel position stuff. I've always wanted a fancy, head up, prancy heel, and had zero success training it. I was complaining that I get frustrated every time I try to do the perch work, because Gusto tries to rear foot target it, then tries to get all four feet on, then tries to lay down on it, and spends the entire time yelling at me. So I went to video tape it, and of course he instantly gave me this, with no prep:

Please excuse the mess - the only space I have to train is the basement, and we are trying to re-organize!

I'm checking in. Quinn and I had our whole training facility to ourselves last night and it was a wonderful hour to the horrible day I had yesterday. I got a lot on video and I'm sifting through all of it now to try and piece together a few videos. I forgot how much work recording/editing can be. But I did miss it. Maybe from now on I will try filming more structured sessions.

We are going back and reviewing all the simple things. Not because she doesn't know it, per se, but because my signals are inconsistent and I need to hammer that out before we move onto anything else. Also clicker. I can be a second or more late on the clicker, or miss it entirely.

I haven't really done any formal training since early 2012? I think? So I'm quite rusty. Practice, practice, practice.

We were playing at the park today and I thought to myself... this disc would be more fun if we knew more tricks.
Enter vault training attempt.

It's a bad video with bad basement lighting but eh. And I don't claim to actually know what I'm doing.

She's a huge fan these days of throwing her back legs in the air and onto things. So I let her have her moment at the end.

It surprised me the amount of coaxing it took to get her to jump UP off the ottoman. I had to actually dig and find the creative bone in my body (I didn't know I had one) because I couldn't get her to follow treats or toys and actually keep her head up. What I ended up doing was having her stand on the ottoman and I asked for hand touches right above her head, and gradually moved my hand further away until she actually was jumping off to touch my hand. Thankfully things click in her head pretty fast, so once she did it a time or two it was no problem.

I'm also happy that I can have her jump for the disc AND still have treats on me. Because up until very recently, she refused to acknowledge toys/playing if she knew I had food. So stuff like this was really hard to do. So yay Cajun.

Since she was getting this pretty well, I did make some attempts at sitting on the ottoman and seeing if she'd still vault that way, but apparently that changes the picture a lot for her and she just kept jumping over me instead. Drat, that means I need to train and stuff. :p I just want to lump behaviors.

Session 2!

I thought I had the camera in focus but obviously not. :(

Unfortunately it didn't occur to me to record any of this, until she was exhausted and we were done training... and then I went waaaaiittt I want a video! So her attempts here are way more half-hearted and sloppier. She also likes to fake me out and throw in the occasional rebound instead, for good measure.

Overall though, I can't complain with where she's headed with this and how fast she picked this up. I want to see how this goes once we take it outdoors!

Just some practice on the basics. The practice is really more for me than her, though. She is spectacular, but I am working HARD on keeping consistent, reward placement, and my quickness on the clicker.

I'll be honest. I didn't even edit this one. Little bit of attention, loose leash walking, and there were some distractions going on.

Right at 2 minutes I'm thinking about how to deal with her switching sides. At first I thought that is why she barked, I'm slow. But then I saw someone walking by. I always forget that "Shhh" is alternative for "Down". Until I do it.

This was at the VERY end of our hour, so I'm incredibly spacey and slow. I also got a massage right before our hour, so I'm extra spacey.

FOOTSTALL FOOTSTALL FOOTSTALL

Getting Payton up on a small bucket was easy.
Coaxing him off the bed onto the bucket on my feet was a minor challenge. He would put the front feet on but the back feet was a trust issue... took a quick step back and had him get on it on the floor again, tried it sitting on my legs like a shin stall (NO PROBLEM) and switched it to my feet while he was sitting on it. Then getting him to climb on with the bucket on my feet was easy.

I thought we'd go big and just try it so... I asked him to jump up onto the bucket from the floor. This was another minor challenge because he just didn't seem to think he was big enough to get up there at first.
BUT THEN HE TOTALLY DID IT.

TWICE.

ONCE IN FRONT OF MY MOM SO I HAVE A WITNESS.

Holy crap holy crap I have wanted this one for a while and I actually think we're gonna get it this time.

Right at 2 minutes I'm thinking about how to deal with her switching sides.
Try rewarding from the hand on the same side as the dog. I think she may be switching because you are rewarding from the right hand, so she figures it will be easier if she just goes around to your right side.
