People Names, Yay or Nay?

I really love the name Webster but it would be super awkward considering my step-moms maiden name was Webster and my last name is Webber. lol. Otherwise, I love it and wish it could be in my 'future names' list.

I put "like it" because I don't care all that much, honestly. For me, some dogs seem to just "fit" their names, others don't. Doesn't have to be a people name or not for that to hold true for me.

Kimma isn't a person's name, but it was originally derived from someone's name. Jari is. Pentti is. Bubbles isn't (obviously LOL).

I also do not personally enjoy are the "sports" names. But sometimes they work. I dunno. Whatever the owners want, I suppose

I'm not sure if there's a line somewhere that I draw or not. I mean, Georgie (Georgette) is obviously a people name... Auggie (Augustine) and Payton are both from particular individual's last names, but they are also people first names. My next dog will likely again have a sports player's last name, but it's used as a first name as well.
Pepper you might say is clearly a dog's name but there are of course people who are named Pepper too, so..?
I think there's also some changes in what's a "people name" anyway. It used to be oh LOLOL those crazy famous people naming their kids wacky stuff like Blue Ivy but now it's pretty much just people, haha.

I don't feel like I've ever had somebody tell me their dog's name and I've been like "oh that's a weird name for a dog." I guess I just really don't think about it that much!

Bubbles totally is a people name.

It's like the last name I would ever choose for a dog but my goodness if it doesn't fit her perfectly. Breeder wins the name game for her and Pentti. And Pentti's dam... Tulipallo means fireball - HECK YES prefect for a female Finkie!!!!!!

I used to hate it. That's like my one "don't do" for naming dogs.

Ended up naming my dog Trent.

And a cat named Bree. These are the first two animals I've ever named. I did choose the "in certain times" option though, because it does work. And I love other people names for other dogs, and can't imagine them being anything else (Quinn, Abe, Elsie, Sloan, Kim, Mia, Rose, Maisy, Cohen, etc.).

I've named things just about everything, it seems. I would say a large portion are named after movie/book/video game characters. But some had "people" names. Others were discriptive (color, object, etc).

Currently we have a dog named Cynder (because she's black), Abrams (because he's a tank), Histamine (because she triggers allergies), and The Potato (because he looks like a potato). God help our children. LOL

I'm not a fan for my own animals, but whatever dips your wick. Of course, my own pets came with the worst human names ever.

I have a list of names that I like, and I try and pick the winners from that. There are TV/book names, science names, descriptive names, anything that appeals to me.

As a note, Gambit, Gimmick, and Felony appeared nowhere on that list. :lol-sign:

Depends on the name for me. I don't like human names that are common for dogs and/or kids like Max, Lucy, Sadie, etc. But I do like quirky human names that are old and not so "everyday" common names - like Ned, Fergus, Hank, etc. I guess because they are uncommon but typically so human that they're really cute on a dog!

I think it's great on certain dogs (I have a Julian...so... ) and I swear i'm naming a dog Gary someday, lol

I don't go out of my way to choose "people names" for pets, but I'm not opposed to it by any means.

Now that I think of it, most of my animals actually are named from people names... but many of them aren't so obvious. At least, I don't think so. lol

Well I named my dog Gwen so...people names. Usually from books or movies. Gwen is named from a character in a book. I think it fits her. I'd rather see a dog named Mason over another Buddy.

Haha, Webster came with his name so I cannot take credit for it. We were originally considering changing it but 24 hours in there was no going back -- it just fits too well and I love it .

We later considering giving Mira the name Merriam because I really am just that cheesy...

In the future I doubt I will name a dog as popular a name as Kim just because it's kind of confusing. Often people would think *my* name was Kim, or at dog events someone would call out KIM meaning one of the humans and I would turn around... haha. That said yeah I can't imagine her with any other name so I have no regrets, just probably won't repeat .

Her original name was Cookie (foster) and while we didn't know what we were going to name her yet, we did know she would not stay Cookie...!

I'm indifferent. I've got one with a people name and two without. I just use names I like.

See, which ones are you considering the 'not people' names and which one are you considering the 'people name' lol?

To me, I've heard both Rider and Harlow for people names.

I like people-ish names.

Zander, Quinn, Macie, Dante, Gustav, Eve, Indy...etc.

Not so much super popular human names. And occassionally I don't mind the odd dog name. Something like Spot would drive me insane, but I don't mind uncommonish/clever names.

and now Hudson (who is named after a river, that is named after a person)

So I'm going to vote, "yeah, I'm OK with it"

Well, I have one dog with a human name, and one dog with a sport-type name, so I pretty much just **** off the entire dog world in one way or another

Honestly, I have never put a lot of thought into other people's dog names, or really thought any type was weird. I like a lot of people names for dogs, I like a lot of sport names for dogs. My biggest complaint is weird foreign names, but mostly just because I get frustrated when working the gate at trials!

I have given up trying to correct one person in our agility club who constantly refers to me as Meg.
