What the smallest amount of space you could live in?

I don't know how I always end up in these situations :rofl1: but for me, location trumps everything else which is why I always end up in TINY apartments.
But the tiny apartment MEANS I live in an area with great parks, cafes, restaurants etc... where I can of course walk to get whatever I need.

My apartment in Boston was 290 Sq Feet and looks like my place in Seattle will be following that route and I actually don't mind... but people think it's totally crazy. Especially with a dog.

Now, I don't think I could ever live that way as a couple but as a single person... I don't mind the lack of space (I tend to make my living space in one room anyhow) and other than a few storage issues I've had to be creative with (the units do come with quite a bit of closet space, but storage for other crap I don't need poses a problem but if anything it helps me be less of a hoarder) it doesn't really ever bother me.
I actually think it's what has given Merlin the impressive ability to settle down whenever we are inside because it's like...you are not messing around in here LOL

I am also thinking of renting a bedroom in a home.. but ughhh roommates ughhhh and I end up holing myself in my room ANYHOW
There are also some lovely perks...lower rent, all utilities included including internet, basics are furnished. I am just so sick of moving.

Plus my carbon footprint is tiny including taking public transport lol YAY FOR THE ENVIRONMENT!

So...could you do it?


Keep in mind the units offer shared kitchens (much bigger than the little tiny fridge, microwave and stove top in your unit) and lounge areas and gym

Yes absolutely, especially if it saved me money.

I lived in a 320ish square feet apartment for a year. It was fine. I don't have that much stuff so it's really not a problem for me. I visited a 200 squ feet one though and that was just way too small for me... I need room for a desk at least! Of course now with the kids and husband it wouldn't work so well :lol-sign: I only had a cat though, and it was small for her... so for this reason alone I don't know if I would do it again. I HATE living in the city though. I need quiet and green spaces.

I don't know about the shared kitchen though, it sounds like a pain to have to take your cooking stuff down every time (and I wouldn't trust people not to steal my stuff if I left it there).

If I had a small storage unit somewhere (or my parent's basement), absolutely. I would much, much rather have a small space to myself than a room in a shared home.

I wouldn't need more room on a day to day basis, although I do have probably 8 big tubs of stuff from my childhood that I wouldn't be able to part with, but don't need access to.

Absolutely could! I've lived in a 450-500sqft apartment for a year with no issues. If I'm going to be perfectly honest, there was extra floor space that was a bit unnecessary, so it could have easily been condensed. As a single person I also have no problem with minimal space. Pit is perfectly fine in teensy housing, too, so that's nice.

I almost prefer little homes as I tend to just stay in one or two rooms of a large house anyway and end up wasting the rest. And then comes the dust that you have to worry about!

If I could find an apartment that was about 75% kitchen space, I'd be happy. That's where the bulk of my belongings are from it seems!

I'm the odd person out- as cute as that is, I couldn't live there. I need to be able to move more than a couple of steps without bumping into something.

I could, but only if I was living alone and just had Em. No effing way I'm sharing that much space with the cats or Bloo, hahaha. I don't think Rick and I would have enough room to "be" comfortably in there, especially since he'd never be without his cats and I'd never be without Em.

Since we have Bloo, and the cats, and Em, the smallest we're looking at doing is ~750sqft. We NEED two bedrooms to keep everyone safe.

With one person and one (or two, if medium sized) dogs yes I could do it. Four dogs, two cats, birds..nope nope. But I will say, I currently live with my mom and I spend all of my time in my bedroom which is roughly the size of that apartment. Unless I'm cooking/eating or outside, I'm up here. I'll say the four dogs are fine/alright here, but I would prefer them to be able to utilize a whole house.

If it were just me and one dog, an efficiency would be aok, especially if I was within walking distance of everything and it was a safe neighborhood. I'd consider a single roommate in a larger place with our own rooms but not more than one because that always seems to cause trouble!

I like the idea of the larger shared kitchen option, but I suspect that I'd end up eating microwave meals solely because who wants to cart all the ingredients and cookware down the hall to actually make things? LOL

Right now I have a 1700 sq ft house that I share with hubby, 4 dogs, and a cat. We actually use about 1100 sq ft, though. LOL

No way. I like my space. But I don't live in a highly populated area where a 300 sq ft apartment would be likely. I like the current size of my apartment which is about 950 sq ft. I've lived in an apartment with about 400-500 and it was just overwhelming. I hate doing laundry so I like to have a laundry area/room. In that small of an apartment my laundry became overflowing in 2 days. Not to mention playing with Gwen inside that small of a place was impossible.

I want people to feel welcome when they visit. I want a home. (But I can't afford a real one so a nice apartment has to do :lol-sign

Totally I could! I'm kinda thinking that a small apartment like that will be the first sort of place I'll move to when I move out. It won't be for at least another year and a half or so, because I want to finish school first (I started a graduate program super close to home), but yep. Probably a teeny tiny apartment. I think Paris and Seamus would be just fine with a small living space. When we're home, we usually spend most of our time hanging out in my room anyway.

Plus, I'd love to live in a more urban-ish area with a lot of neat cafes and restaurants within walking distance. I'd totally sacrifice living space! I don't need a lot of room.

I couldn't go that small without major life changes. But I would always choose a tiny house on a vast tract of land over any other option. Our current house is stupid-big because that's just how it worked out. Kinda nice to have space in theory but in reality it just is more to upkeep, more to find furniture for, and more square footage of materials to buy if/when you update.

Nice for guests, but the other 350 days of the year...

I prefer a small space by far. Our current house would be too big if it were just us, but we rent out the extra bedrooms.

Give me a sturdy trailer home on 10 square miles of land and I'll be happy (and stinky) as a pig in mud.

If I only had one, maybe two adult/well behaved/trained dogs, I could and would love to do it, honestly. I prefer not hoarding things, and I am like you - I hole up in my room anyway. I don't need or want things.

Honestly, I could. As a single person with one small dog, I don't think it would be a big deal, as I really only use a small area of my parents house now that I live in. I easily spend 90% of the time in my bedroom anyway. And I'm not one to have a ton of people over, or parties, or anything, so likely the most I would ever have in there at once would be 1-3 friends at a time, if that.

Of course, I couldn't live like that forever, but if it saved me money while in my 20's and single? Yup. I'd do it.

NO way! I like stuff...I like have stuff spread out lol. I like moving from room to room throughout the day. I like having projects and things I am working on. I also cant imagine not having my own yard/garden. I am in awe of people who can. I never even lived in a dorm, would get heebie jeebies visiting my friends in them

It's actually funny because we have a 2000 square feet house and spend 95% of our awake time in the family room anyway. I think my cat uses the rest of the rooms more than I do. The kids like playing in the living room though, so there's that. And having a guest/workout room is pretty handy.

No way, I have way too many hobbies to live in that small a space. Our current house is ~800 square feet and still too small in a lot of ways. Not enough room to keep my sewing and knitting stuff accessible, not enough space for my husband's screen printing and soap making projects. I also love stuff, and while I am forever trying to declutter, the house is perpetually overflowing with craft stuff and computer stuff and dog stuff and bird stuff and animal bones and tea pots and plastic dinosaurs. And books, we love books.
