Kind of semantics. It's a song about violence in relationship (actual or not) aimed at teenagers on mainstream radio.

But everyone thought teenagers are capable of distinguishing that "oh she didn't mean it, and oh it's JUST A SONG".

Well this is just a book, read by (presumably) people over the age of 18... Are they more stupid than teenagers?
Actually (and again personally, I can't speak for anybody else) I don't disagree with you. I was really disturbed by the Rhianna/Eminem song that came out a few years ago that had lyrics in it like "I'm gonna chain you to the bed and set this house on fire." Especially because Rhianna had actually been in a physically abusive relationship... super disturbing to me.

And yes people are stupid LOL.

To me there's a big difference between 'sometimes I wanna slap you in your whole face' and 'I'm gonna chain you to the bed and set this house on fire'.

I did think that song was disturbing. The first I see as frustration and venting... But then again I've had those days where every little thing someone I love does drives me bonkers. To me the song is saying that he frustrates her SOMETIMES and drives her crazy but it must be true love because despite that she wants to stay with him.

Also 'I sometimes want to' vs 'I'm going to'

I don't think it's semantics but I don't think we're going to agree.

That said, if there's a good male lead in the movie....I might watch it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfZWFDs0LxA

I read a few chapters, skimmed some more, interest lost to the point of no return at the part where he "[rips] through [her] virginity." I don't have good grounds to judge the whole series, but to me it does read like it's based off of Twilight. Contrived plot, writing and dialogue are bad, I can't relate to the characters at all, etc. It's like watching one of those horror movies where the people act ridiculously and the jumpy (/sex) scenes are boring. Only it's a book instead of a 1.5 hour movie.

But I'll probably watch the movie! It looks more interesting.

That song was definitely specifically about (mutually) abusive relationships.

Articles I've read (and Wikipedia) indicate that a good number of well-known actors have been asked to read for the role, and many turned it down.

TBH, I'm not surprised. Not only is it an erotic film, it's an erotic film about control and manipulation in a BDSM environment. I've no doubt it will be an upwards career move for Jamie Dornan though - I'm just watching him now in Once Upon A Time and he's pretty good.

Relevant to the thread, I did read the first book (pirated). That's about all I could stomach. Like Fran, I'm... familiar with the culture and it's just not okay to me to have this as the first mainstream public portrayal of a BDSM relationship. Yes it's just fiction, but this is the first time a true BDSM-themed erotic novel has become so popular, and it's introducing a LOT of people to the idea of it in the first place. You all know better, but a lot of people don't. A lot of people think this is what happens in BDSM relationships. It isn't. It's against everything a good and safe BDSM situation should be.

I understand that lots of people read for the film and many weren't comfortable but I guess that's the trouble with books to movies. You have a certain idea in your head of what the character is like and he just doesn't fit the image I had lol.

As for the other... I get that also but I can't not like the book because people will
Do stupid things lol. As someone who has zero interest in BDSM, I don't habe a personal interest riding on it so I can just enjoy it for what it is.

I read it, out of curiosity and because I enjoy light reading sometimes. I had no expectations, I knew it had started out as Twilight fanfiction, and yes it was terribly written but I read all 3 of them and found them mildly entertaining.

Not sure if I will go to the movie but I'll probably see it at some point.

so many people into BDSM.

I hated reading them as the writing itself is horrid , the love story had me hoked though. I do like who they picked for actress and am glad they went with lesser knowns, Now if the can pull it off on screen will be the question.

I will watch it online as I refuse to be anywhere packed with people , especially sexually frustrated/adventerous moms who realize that watching is SOOOOOOOOO different from reading ;lol

I read the first book, skimmed the second and bought the third just to read the ending. My sister loved it, I thought it was mediocre. My Mom can't get past page 60 in the first book. I have no desire to see the movie.

I really found the characters to be flat, the erotic scenes to be the same thing over and over. It felt like the author didn't have enough personal experience to truly describe or paint a picture of an adult relationship. I didn't feel like the characters ever experienced personal growth, I never felt that there was a climax to the whole thing. It was like being on one very up and down roller coaster.

But, then again, this is also coming from someone who didn't enjoy Magic Mike or whatever it was called, either.

I read the first and second book. I thought they were okay. It wasn't well written but it wasn't terrible. I thought the author did a good job of letting everyone know that Christian had real issues that needed to be dealt with. I agree with a lot of what Greenmajick (sp?) said. For me it was an entertaining, easy read and nothing more. That said, I was reading through another series similar and got burned out so I did not read the third book.

My friend (who really liked the series) and I are going to see the movie. I think it will be entertaining. I don't like the lead who was chosen. My inner SOA die hard was so stoked when Charlie Hunnam first took the role, so I'm still pretty bummed he went back on that. I think he would have fit the role well. Plus supa-hottie.
