Future breeds?

We've had a gazillion topics like this, but not in awhile, so time for a new one!
What breeds would you like to own in the future? If you already have purebred dogs, do you want to continue keeping what you have now, branch out to new breeds, or both? What interests you about these breeds?

I love threads like this. Begin!

For me I am looking at a medium sized, non-shedding dog that can do agility. There is a Wheaton that does agility there so I'm am looking strongly at them, Lagottos and Standard Poodles.

But I have hopefully 3 more years with Gage before I will be getting a new dog.

I love my ES and will probably always have one, but I'd love to add a sighthound to the mix sometime. Either a Silken, LHW, or Borzoi - depending on what's going on in our life at the time.

Ibizan hounds. After that, I think I'm done experimenting. Dobes and Beezers sound good enough.

More Aussies. So many more. But sometimes I think Journey is perfect enough just to have her forever and kind of don't want another dog while I have her lol. It's ridiculous, but I don't want another dog to take any time away from her. I'm too obsessed with my Journey Dog haha. But, it's inevitable that I'll add another eventually. Reasons why I want more Aussies? Because Journey has been an amazing introduction to the breed and I'd be happy to live my life with a bunch of dogs similar to her for the rest of my life. They're everything I've ever wanted. Fun, spunky, goofy, cuddly, velcro without being obsessively needy, incredible learners, ideal size, easy care coat, most I meet are friendly with people, etc.

I really, really want a Belgian Groenendael one day. From one particular breeder. Or a Terv, because more colour, but I really love Groenendaels. Why? To be honest, I don't really know haha. For one, I think they're super pretty. And I've just really enjoyed the ones I've been around. Another active, intelligent, eager breed. A little more dog than what I've experienced so far I think (maybe not though), which is why I've yet to have had one, but I know I will someday.

Tollers I'm undecided on. As of right now, I can't say I truly want another as much as I used to. But I'd really like a dog someday from one or two particular breeders, and I feel like once Dance is gone I am going to miss having a Toller around. So there is a good chance I'll have another, but it'll have to be a very particular type of dog. And Dance I am sure will likely be around at least another 7-8 years based on her family history, so I've got a while before there will be anymore Tollers.

And I still really want a Koolie someday. Just not sure when because I want a very particular type of dog. Pretty much I just want a Traveler or a Ned haha. And why a Koolie? Basically because of all of the traits I like about Aussies. Or at least Journey anyway. Fun, goofy, eager, quick to learn, active, etc. With the added bonus of an even more easy care coat and a little less physical with their bodies (they seem more careful with their bodies, as opposed to my body slamming, cliff jumping Aussie) and seemingly less prone to dog reactivity (I've not experienced this with Journ, but I know other Aussies who are, and Koolies so far I've not heard this really be mentioned).

My very next dog will most likely be another Aussie, but not for at least 3 years I think. No more dogs will be added until a) I've lost one or two of my current dogs, because I don't have time to devote to five nor do I want to, b) I've reached some goals with Journey (don't have the time or money to trial and attend classes with multiple dogs really), c) I have my own house.

I think my future will consist of a couple of Aussies and another breed thrown in here and there for good measure if there is time, money and space for an additional dog.

As you can tell, the only breed of which I currently own that I am dead set on continuing to own in the future are Aussies (knowing that although they should be similar to Journ, it's likely no dog ever will live up to her, and that's ok). I am undecided on Tollers, as much as I love Dance. And Dobermans will always be very special to me, but I know we clash, so I'd rather enjoy Dobes that live with other people. I'm not really keen on experimenting and like sticking with tried and true since dogs are a huge commitment and are around for a long time, but I feel like the three breeds I really want to own in the future are all similar enough that it's not really experimenting. A Belgian would be the most experimental.

My breed will continue being Koolies, my favorite by far and I can't see them not being my main. They just compliment me perfectly. But I also really want to add a sighthound to my house to be a larger, more laid back dog.

So I think my list kinda looks like this:

Koolie
Either a Greyhound or a Borzoi
Whippet
Random adult high drive dog if I happen upon one (BC/ACD/Kelpie/Ect.)
Random large lower key dog if I happen upon one

Other than that I think I'm pretty set. I like having my go, go, go dogs but I love having a lower key but still can do stuff with dog to set them off.

Aw heck, this question is getting harder.

What breeds would you like to own in the future?
Border Collie - A lot of things I like and appreciate about Feist aren't necessarily breed typical (super friendly with everyone, snugglelovebugness, and other awesome ninja skills) so I'd have to be pretty specific about what lines I got my next BC from.
Jack Russell Terrier - Well, I kind of want to steal Siri from PWCorgi, so yes. I've always really, really liked them, definitely high on my nextdog list.
Koolie - They look like super fun, less intense versions of Feist with their own ridiculous side to them. I love what I've seen of them and they'd be super fun to have at some point.
Flat-Coated Retriever - They are very much what I think of when I think awesome retrievers, and I've wanted one since I was little. Must wait until I can have a 'big' dog.
French Bulldog - The snuggles, the snorts, the toaddogness.

Definitely both! I love Feist and she is absolutely perfect for me. At the same time, I don't want to go back to border collies right away because I don't want to be comparing that dog to Feist. She's kind of a hard act to follow in my eyes.

Both. I definitely intend to have APBT and American Foxhounds for a very long time. There's a possibility of a lab sneaking in there somewhere.

My primary interests for the coming years are Malinois and Tollers, with a sprinkle of a few others breeds (Bull Terriers, possibly SBT, CWC, possibly GSDs, Kelpies, BCs, etc).

I really do love all dogs but there's really only a somewhat short list that I have an interest in owning.

On my high list:
- Border Terrier (it's very likely this will be nextdog)
- Border Collie (there's also a high probability with this, too, but I'll be fairly specific about my wants, and breeder, etc)
- Mini American Shepherd (I want a herding breed, but maybe in a smaller package, maybe less intensity, I'll be picky about breeders here too)
- Australian Shepherd (I keep going back and forth with them).

^ That's kind of my thought process AND order right now. I'm hoping by mid-late 2015, I should be ready. I've narrowed down breeders for two of these breeds.

On my list of would happily own, but maybe not 'seek out' at the moment:
- a mixed breed or rescue from the shelter
- Papillon (an oversized one, either from breeder or shelter)
- Westie
- Cairn
- Silky
- Yorkie (would more than likely be a rescue, I won't go to a breeder to seek one out)
- Chihuahua (again, wouldn't seek one from a breeder, but I've met some neat rescue oversized Chi's that I really quite like)


And then way into the future (when Jackson is no longer around, but well, he will be forever sooo... ):
- Golden Retriever
- English Mastiff
- Dogue De Bordeaux
- *maybe* German Shepherd
- *maybe* Rottweiler


I may have missed some.

To be perfectly honest, I could live with a lot of the toy dogs perfectly fine, even if they weren't what *I* was looking for in a dog. My mom has been discussing getting another dog for them but since I still live at home, I'd obviously be a big part of it's life, so I get a little say in breed but unfortunately if THEY do decide to get a dog for themselves, me getting a 2nd dog may be held off because she won't want 3 dogs in the house (although I am back and forth between houses, still...)


And while I really want a BC, I admit the hair and the slightly larger size would be a big change for me. I've kind of gotten used to non shedding and smaller sized and it kind of just ... works with my current lifestyle. Border Terrier is what keeps calling my name.

Corgi. Pembroke.
Shelter mutt. Mini poodle maybe.


Not a good home for a Kelpie. And Chaz has scared me off from BCs or Aussies

I'm a couple of years out from wanting another dog in the mix (and have a 2 dog limit where I live, and Meg is living forever, so maybe never). Gusto still gets any money I have for training/trialling, and will for a while.

I've never done a purebred puppy thing, and it is entirely possible, maybe even likely, that I will just continue to do rescues. I've certainly hit the jackpot twice, and I have the contacts to seek out just what I'd want.

The other real possibilities would be a BC or a Border/staff/stack/sport mix.

There are a few other breeds I'd like in the future perhaps (Cavaliers being one), but that wouldn't fit super well into my life as it now stands.

First of all I take full credit for the Journey & Devan match up and it gives me warm fuzzy feelings to know my big mouth brought them together LOL

As for the future?
- I straddle the line between CERTAINLY wanting another Oracle aussie because I love Merlin so much....and not wanting one because I love Merlin so much and fear getting another who isn't as perfect LOL but if his mom/dad had another litter at the right time I probably wouldn't be able to resist

- My future small breed will probably be a shihtzu I've fallen in love with them working in a pet shop. Such sweet fun little dogs.

- A basset hound.
I have done 0 research into their temperament or health....but I know at some point the opportunity to rescue one will present itself and I am a sucker for those faces and ears

At this point the breeds on my maybe future dogs list:

Nextdog and Next next dog will likely be a combination of Border collie or koolie just depending on what happens there and a pyrenean shepherd or miniature american shepherd. All 4 breeds are very likely to have in the future.

I'm also interested in:

- another papillon but I'm not sure where I'll get one from. I want a breeder who focuses on health and temperament. I really want a nice one to take through agility from puppyhood. It would be awesome. Probably won't happen though till the current two are gone. So maybe 3 dogs down the line
- sheltie- rescue or from my friends' breeder. I love their dogs and my other friend runs the sheltie rescue here. That wouldn't be for a few dogs either
- silken windhound. I want a sighthound eventually and this would be the one.

Those are the main draws right now.

Other than that, I will definitely have a Buhund someday.

Tollers are also on my short list.

Perhaps a Sheltie, but only from a specific breeder/her lines.

If I get really adventurous, a Koolie (yes, I said it, I'm falling in love with the breed from afar as I still have yet to meet one).

I've only just got my BC pup, so I'm not getting another puppy for a looooooooong time (at least five or six years). I think my next dog will be a BC from the same breeder, and then a Rough Collie. Or maybe Collie and then BC. Not sure on the exact order, but next two dogs will be BC and Collie for sure. I think I'm pretty stuck on BCs and Collies. No real desire to branch out, except maybe for the right Aussie. Maybe.

Other than that, one day in the distant future I will have a Samoyed! One day....

I want a Feist. My problem with BCs is that they vary soo much. I meet one I love then the next from the same breeder I totally don't like at all. I'm just too picky with them I think. My favorite two BCs are a craigslist dog and a rescue so that totally doesn't help either, lol. I want a Feist.

My list as of now, Next dog which should be happening next year, is hopefully an Aussie. Mal is on my list, I want another Cocker for sure. Tollars are on my list, I'd love a french Brittany. I really want a papillon as well. That's my list.

Here's my list of breeds I'm totally sold on, and want eventually:

There are others that I like/want but those are the ones I'm totally sold on. The caveat is that I wanted to get involved in a breed, showing/competing/breeding, so I probably won't have time to have all of those breeds if I have multiples of one breed at a time... we'll see how it plays out!

Both! I've waffled about whether or not I'd ever have more Brittanys because Rowan is perfect, and I don't want to be constantly comparing dogs to him because that's not fair... but he's perfect and I can't imagine not having more Brittanys after he's gone. I definitely won't have more while he's still around, though.

The others are all new to me, except for the Standard Poodle, kind of. I grew up with toys & miniatures and my cousins had a standard. I have a lot of poodle experience overall.

I love herding and sporting dogs. They are by far my favorite groups. I couldn't even name exactly the traits that draw me to them... we just work.

This is kind of my problem right now too. I meet some BCs that seem to have so many issues and others that are just like... Regular dogs but with more focus/drive which I love. I was also surprised how much I liked the Coolie AND how much Jackson liked him too (but jax did need a little break after a while) so K/Coolies are somewhere in the back of my mind too, I just worry getting a breed I haven't spent much time around except one dog.
