Marvelon gave me HORRIBLE side effects. Like going through puberty all over again. Acne, mood swings, extreme depression, pain, severe cramps, weird weight gain.

Nuvaring, up until lately (for the past 3 years) has been excellent for me. And even the side effects I just started seeing aren't overly serious or even that annoying.
I have a lot of that going on. I offically made the appointment. I am HOPING to get an IUD, but would be happy with anything that doesn't make me a crying mess. I honestly laid in bed last night just sobbing like the world was ending over NOTHING. I was trying to calm myself down thinking "it's okay, nothing's wrong" because seriously, nothing was wrong lol. Feel much better this morning just knowing I am going to the Dr very soon and getting away from this.

Beanie, what were the side effects you had with Mirena? That's what I'm currently looking into.

Yeah, sounds like you're definitely suffering from depression. Of course everybody experiences stuff differently, but for me it really is a "I'm crying, not for a reason, but because crying is a thing that happens to me these days."

For the Mirena, my boobs hurt. Like really hurt. All. the. time. It's not a huge deal because they're tiny so it's not like I frequently bump into them or anything, but whenever I touched them at all it HURT. Putting on shirts hurt. Putting on/taking off a sports bra, ow. And it never went away. That is a potential side-effect of any birth control, but not one I ever experienced before and it sucked.
Also the discharge was pretty ridiculous. When I first started on depo, I spotted, constantly, for the first year I was on it, then it stopped. I never had to wear a liner or anything, it wasn't really that bad, just annoying. For the Mirena it was a LOT of discharge, and it was thick, mucus-y discharge. It was really gross and after a couple months of it not changing or going away I started wearing panty liners every day.

For some people those are no big deal, but those combined with the whole "this thing in you can totally become a loose foreign body and go floating around in your body" was enough that I had it taken out. I went back on the depo. I don't have any side-effects on it so I'm a-okay with it... it works for me. After how bad things were on the NuvaRing, and the Mirena not working out as well as I'd hoped, I was honestly afraid to keep trying stuff and just went back with what worked in the past.

Thanks for the information. I have really sore boobs right now on this pill. Not all the time, but like 2/3 weeks of the month I am really sore. Depo and the Mirena are my two top picks right now. I guess my best bet is to talk about both with the doctor, but I am doing my share of research now... I'd love to get on either of those and end up with no period at all!

Did an ACV rinse about a week ago. Got some raw honey and some more aloe to start back up with natural care. This winter didn't like my naturalistic ways and I had bad dandruff. Back on the wagon!

Brain logic: Been having a horrible month and hate everything about yourself? Go buy a swimsuit! Go buy a swimsuit that uses Euro sizes! That will solve everything!

Does anyone have tips for taking off mascara? I'm happy with my makeup remover (Clinique Eye Make-up Remover), but I have a hard time actually getting all of the mascara off my lashes. Its been a problem for me like.... always. I've tried other make-up removers (including various brands of make-up removing wipes and baby oil), but to no avail, so I figure it must be my technique?

Soak a cotton ball or a cotton pad with your makeup remover, then place it on your eyelashes. Hold it there for about 30 seconds and let it do it's job. Then you can do some dabbing and patting, but try not to rub or scrub.

Beanie, what were the side effects you had with Mirena? That's what I'm currently looking into.

I totally miss my Mirena. I had it for five years, taken out for "old age" a month ago. Everyone reacts to the IUD differently. I had light bleeding for the first 6-8 months but then NOTHING for 4.5 years (until the end of it's life). No symptoms, no bleeding, no PMS symptoms. No issues at all.

Now I have cousins who had uncomfortable symptoms immediately after getting the mirena and none of them kept it in long enough to see if it'd work itself out. I honestly don't remember anything horrible the first months/year I had mine though.

Now I'm not in need of birth control (husband has taken care of that issue) and I reeeeeeally miss my IUD. I had my first period last week in five years (on a 10 hour flight, of course) and it was miserable. I'm such a baby.

But seriously, I'm a huge Mirena advocate--but that's because it worked well for me.

This almost makes me want to switch from a copper IUD to Mirena. One thing that I've always wondered though - when you never have any periods, don't you freak out ALL THE TIME that you're pregnant? I think I would just be a mess, suspecting the worst all the time.

I also love the zero hormones with the copper. I think I'll leave it for now. Maybe when my 5 years are up I'll look into the Mirena.

I take daily BC so it's a bit easier to feel comfort in knowing you aren't pregnant. But I always continue on and skip periods. (Why would I want to have a period?:lol-sign:) I've only wondered if I was pregnant once and that was when I first started taking BC. Otherwise... no pregnancy symptoms so I assume I'm not pregnant. There are other things at play here, though. PCOS has made me pretty lax about pregnancy scares.

I do not want/need a period to tell me I'm not pregnant. I will deal without the pain and bleeding.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. Similar to what I normally do, but I'm probably not holding the remover on long enough since I'm like, the least patient person in the world.

Because of the craziness that I had on OBC, my Dr. recommended the copper over the Mirena. I am SO glad I went with the Mirena though... I originally went on OBC because I had heavy periods and crazy cramping, and my period was irregular (every 4 to 6 weeks) so as soon as my doc said that heavier flow and cramping was a side effect of the copper.... I did have some cramping after I got my Mirena, and a couple days of light bleeding, but the cramps were no worse than a regular period and were effectively treated with Advil. :)

I figure, I'm married and we plan to have kids in the future once I'm done school (in a year-ish)... if the IUD does happen to fail it's not the end of the world, although Mirena's effectiveness is >99%.

I have PCOS and my periods have been nil the last two years. No lie, TONIGHT, I was driving home and my stomach kind of lurched...my first thought was "WAS THAT A KICK. WAS THAT A BABY KICKING ME. I AM GOING TO BE ONE OF THOSE 'I DIDN'T KNOW I WAS PREGNANT' CHICKS.". Yeah. But, I use condoms and pregnancy test when necessary. When I'm in a serious relationship I get on sort of a testing schedule like every 6 weeks.

When I hear things like this (98, 99% effective) I have this horrible thought that "Okay, so you can expect to get pregnant once out of every 100 times you have sex". :rofl1: I know it doesn't work quite like that but I can't help but wonder. :p

lol. If I remember correctly, Mirena is actually like, 99.99% effective? But once you get beyond that it gets pretty difficult to actually measure with any accuracy, you need to have numbers that are so far beyond what is feasible for most studies, even multi-center clinical trials. Plus, something like 80% of conceptions spontaneously abort within the first 4 weeks anyway.

I do periodically worry about being pregnant, so I have a few pregnancy tests stashed for setting my mind at ease. LOL I'd say I wonder about it every 4-6 months.

Mine comes out this fall - it'll be 5 years in December and DH and I are as ready as we'll ever be to have a kid - I'm so not looking forward to dealing with periods again, so I kind of hope that this kid thing happens quickly. LOL

Does anyone know what the best form of birth control for controlling period symptoms? I have awful periods; horrible cramps, heavy bleeding, crippling back and hip pain, headaches, and nauseous and vomiting. My periods are also pretty irregular (I get them in Jan, Feb, March, May, July and September). I'm home from work today because I can't keep food down and can barely stand.
I was on the mini pill for about a year to fix a hormone imbalance, and that was okay, but I'd like to hear other experiences. I haven't had a child.

Everyone reacts to the IUD differently.
That's the problem with birth control in general LOL. Everybody responds so differently. My friend was on NuvaRing and she loved it, which is why I tried it, and that was seriously the worst experience with birth control I have ever had. But she was on it for several years before going off it to have kids and never had any problems like I did. I love being on depo provera, but don't generally recommend it to people, especially people who want to have kids. It's serious stuff and even though it's super awesome for me, I recognize that it's no joke. My sister wanted to go on it years ago and I did my best to actually talk her out of it, because she wants kids. She went on it anyway but thankfully, I think she only had a few injections and then ended up going on something else.

I didn't actually bleed at all on Mirena except for a little bit the day it was placed. That was it. I bled more when I started depo. =P
It's tough because the Mirena was really expensive for me to have placed, so I wanted to stick it out and see if it got better. I liked the IDEA of it so much, too, I really really wanted it to work. FIVE YEARS of not having to mess with it!! And really, at first the side-effects weren't so bad (because FIVE YEARS of not having to mess with it in exchange!), but they got increasingly annoying the longer it went on and then the balance started to shift. I was still kind of bummed when I had it taken out because I had wanted it to work SO BAD, but at the same time, I was ready to have it yanked out. I didn't regret it. Just wished it had worked haha.
The other problem is, how long do you stick something out anyway? The longer I was on NuvaRing the worse my depression got, so trying to stick it out was probably a really bad idea. OTOH with the depo provera, I stuck out the spotting when I first went on it, and that ended after a year and now I don't have any side-effects at all. So... no easy answer. x_x

It's so individualized and our bodies all respond so differently, it's so hard to really "recommend" a birth control. This is why birth control absolutely needs to be covered under medical insurance. =P Because you need a DOCTOR to PRESCRIBE it to you. It's not like "oh which brand of condoms do you like best?" NOPE NOPE NOPE
