Nice. Well, okay.:( I was kinda hoping he'd go away, but if you don't want to sympathize or even understand where I'm coming from, how all this got going the way it did, that's certainly your prerogative. Okay...I'm gone.

oh absolutely--I think it referenced advice for the OP>
as for you Doberluv...you know your advice is very much valued here. I also think that the OP was ready to tackle anyone who was going to challenge his thoughts on the koehler's methods, and you were first up!

Anyway---wouldn't make yourself crazy over it--I think the OP overreacted.

My last piece of advice. Move.
Nah, bagpipes. Let everyone else move ;)

Or, better yet . . . record the dogs barking and when you know your neighbors are trying to relax or sleep, take it out into the backyard, next to the fence and let it rip :) Sometimes you DO have to fight fire with fire.

Face it, as long as the owners aren't going to control their dogs, realistically, you can't.

Ah-ha! Now I get it. Move, as in move to another neighborhood. Not "Carrie, stop dwelling on this and move along." ROFLOL! I'm so dumb! Didn't catch that. Woops!Sorry....

That is why i want to help out. But i know how the Koehler method is viewed, so i am here asking for other options. FOR SURE the neighbors will view the Koehler method as if i am trying to hurt or break her dog's neck. I just don't want to be viewed like that after knowing what i now know. I have not been in touch with new training methods at all, which is why i started this thread.
I still like some of Koehler's methods as far as the basic obedience goes. It's the only method i ever knew of, so i guess i need to re-learn other methods, which i am not opposed to learning and doing.

Hi all,

I can't respond to every post but i am reading them closely.
Thanks for all the advice.

You know, these statements sound, to me, very much like someone who has stepped back from a defensive stance and is responding like a reasonable human being.

Surely, if Robbie can do this, the rest of us can too.

Yeah, well I saw a lot of contradictions. He directly told me that he didn't want to know anything about what was in those links and books, what that was all about.

If i wanted to know what the current, modern trainers are doing with dogs these days, i'm certain i would have asked that question.
All and all, just a lot of inconsistencies and a lot of smart ass retorts, trolling, seemingly to stir things up...

Anyhow, I'm done with this nonsense. I'll be more cautious and reserved next time, if responding to training questions, especially with cocky newbies.

You can't control other people's dogs. Dogs bark. Maura's advice is probably the best so far. Move to another complex or house that does not allow dogs. I'm sure there are plenty around, since it's not exactly easy to find a rental that does allow animals.

I don't think it's really fair to tell the OP that THEY need to move because of neighbors dogs that bark excessively.
I have a neighbor whose dog NEVER shuts up. All hours of the night. Should I just move because it annoys the hell out of me, or do something about it?

Yes, dogs bark, but owners should be decent and remove the dog from the situation if it won't shut up. Mine will bark all night if left where they can go outside and bark at my asshat neighbors dog...so I don't let them go outside at night and they stay quiet. Yes, one of my neighbors approached me about their nightly barking as well and I, being a decent human being...MADE IT STOP.

For the OP, if it's that excessive, just call the police. Eventually the owner will get fined or removed from the property by management for being a PITA. It might not make for good neighbors, but doesn't sound like you have that anyway.

What I was trying to say is, you can't train other people's dogs. And I seriously doubt that the owner of a "spoiled" older dog is going to take very kindly to Koehler type methods being used on their dog.

To the OP, you could honestly get in legal trouble if the owner witnessed you giving their dog physical corrections that they interpreted as too harsh. Personally, I would NOT use any kind of corrective training on another person's dog. Ever. Just from a liability perspective. There have been licensed trainers who have gotten into legal trouble for physical corrections, and you don't even have trainer's credentials to back you up if an accusation is made.

One benefit to positive reinforcement training is that nobody can accuse you of harming their animal. And it does tend to work well.

Agonzalez, barking all hours of the night isn't allowed in city limits, so yeah that is grounds for calling the police. If it's violating the law, then yeah make a report, and keep on making reports until something happens. But if it's mostly in the day, and the dog just runs out and charges the fence on potty breaks and barks then....well....some dogs just do that. It can be trained out of them, but if you live in shared housing with dogs, you should expect some barking to take place. That's why the suggestions to move come along.

I don't know if the OP mentioned this...but have you tried making friends with that dog? Talk to the owner to make sure it doesn't have allergies, and get some special treat that it likes a LOT. Like, a little piece of string cheese or hot dog or something.

When it comes out to charge the fence and bark just sit next to the fence and ignore it until it shuts up for a few seconds. Stuff treat in mouth. Tada! After doing this a few times the dog will learn that coming up to the fence quietly when it's let out to potty results in nice things from the neighbor. It'll start to anticipate being quiet when it's let out, so it can get a treat.

Once the dog learns that, it won't need a treat every time. Maybe once or twice a week to reinforce the quiet behavior.

I won't move away!

Hi,

I won't move at all from where i live. I am here 10 years and she is the new tenant with the barking dog.

I wrote a long post about my soap opera where i live. My post explained that the building rules clearly state, "NO barking dogs". She is just pushing her luck. She knows that she will have to quiet her dog.

All i have to do is complain to the landlord and they will do something about the barking shih tzu, just like they did with the barking bichon maltese.

I just don't want to have to go that route. I would prefer someone else complains this time.

I suggested that i could train her dog to NOT rush the fence, and told her to think about it, (she's thinking about it, i guess). All day Saturday, her dog was in the house with her. Maybe, when i suggested training her dog for her, she figured out that i was getting annoyed. I, also, offered to train the Maltese just before the big agruments started in THAT case. So, maybe, she remembers what happened when the maltese owners flatly refused to have their maltese trained and insisted that their maltese can bark all it wants, and is keeping her shih tzu close to home.

Actually, this morning, Saturday, the dog was out in the yard barking at 9am, and the three (cat owning) brothers who share the yard with her, looked rather annoyed and started herding the dog, themselves, to her steps, and saying to the dog, like idiots, "Get in the house! Bad dog."
She came out stomping and put the dog into her house and the whole day was quiet.
So, maybe the cat owners will start complaining. I know they really don't like barking dogs, and as i stated before, they are probably waiting for me to step in like i did when the maltese started up. But they see i am not doing anything about it, yet, so maybe they will get fed up before i will. The dog is in the next yard from me, but they all share the same yard so the barking must be louder for them than it is for me.

And what is an OP, please? I see people referring to me as that and i can't think of what it means other than Offensive Person which must have been started by the "sophisticated" middle finger sticker upper who has called me a sh*it and a ungrateful troll, and all for thanking her for her first two posts which were, imho, unrealated to my question regarding the shih tzu.

By the way...

Hi ,

WOW!! :yikes:
When i first posted in this forum, i mentioned that i used the Koehler method, years ago.

AND YES, i said that i was planning to use the Koehler Method on the shih tzu. I also stated how I KNOW THAT PEOPLE dislike that method, and i was worried about using it on HER dog. AND i also asked this forum if any one had any advice to offer regarding the shih tzu problem. Just read the two questions that i asked this forum in my FIRST post in THIS thread.

I never said i was going to use the Koehler Method regardless of the advice offered to me - that is another member's backward conclusion to my cleary written post. Don't read how someone quotes and misinterprets MY posts as facts. Just reread the thread and see for yourselves how it turned into what it apparently turned into.

By the way, i still have doberluv on ignore because when i politely thanked her for her two posts and politely stated that i didn't feel that her posts were helpful to the question i presented (and they weren't, in my opinion), all she did was accuse me of Koehler this and Koehler that and she began quoting me and misrepresenting what i said, and proceeded to call me foul names, and was very rude to me.

So, please, stop with the "Don't use Koehler on the shih tzu.", because it's not my fault she doesn't comprehend well what she reads. She even admits to screwing up (again) and misunderstood what someone else had said. Seems to be a recurring trait with her.

I stand by everything i've written in all my posts. And you can see that i was never rude to doberluv as she claims. And for that, the ignore will remain.
I suggest she does the same for me and ignore me, as well, seeing as she thinks so little of me. I doubt she will, though, because she's the troll who causes the trouble in this thread as she likes the drama she causes.
15,000+ posts does not equal 15,000+ votes. It just means she likes to put her two cents into everyone's thread in this forum - like a real busy body with nothing else better to do.
And yea, i see a few of you standing up for her, BUT JUST READ the thread and see where she stepped in and where she tries to take this thread.
I do not wish to debate this any further. Just read the thread from the beginning. It's already written out for anyone to read.
I just wanted to write THIS here post because she seems to have everyone talking like i said I DECIDED TO USE KOEHLER on the shih tzu no matter what advice i was given here. Read the thread, please, slowly.

To even write this post here has been a waste of my time as all anyone has to do is read the thread from the beginning - it's pretty clear where i stand .

Thanks for all the advice concerning stopping the shih tzu's charging the fence. I appreciate it. :hail:

Dober is a professional dog trainer. That's what she does for a living. She has a degree. She's been a member of this forum for six years, and made a lot of posts and spent a lot of her personal time giving professional advice out for free to people who come here asking how to fix behavior problems in their dogs.

Please don't attack her for offering free services. She does it because she loves dogs. She'd rather spend time giving free training advice (time she could be spending on real life paying clients) so that people don't end up getting rid of their dogs out of frustration. Or using outdated training methods that are proven to cause physical and psychological damage to dogs.

She has helped countless dogs and owners through this board over the years. And I'm sure she's indirectly saved dogs from being killed, since a dog that has been dumped for a behavior problem is less likely to be adopted than a well behaved dog.

I don't care if you have her on block, if you don't like her, or her advice. You have a right to your own opinion, but please stop with the personal attacks.

p.s. she's not the only member here with a high post count.
