I am in NO WAY discounting what happened to you or your previous experience with adopting a dog Camp, I just wanted to correct this part of your post.

It should read: There's a reason for a TINY FEW of those dogs to be in shelters.

The biggest reason the MAJORITY of dogs are in shelters is due to Irresponsible owners, plain and simple. Whether they were irresponsible in letting their dog have a litter, intentionally bred that litter, let their dog run loose and get picked up, didn't want search for it, offered very little training and/or attention to the dog until it was so out of control they dumped it, or some combination of the above.
thanks Coop :hail:

well, I invite anyone who has reservations or doubts about rescuing a dog to personally come meet 5 of the best behaved mutts out there ;)

Personally, I value a dogs life over any "beauty" that may be lost by it not being up to som' kennel clubs standard. I also value the dogs life more than any inconvience and emotions, and loss of money their health may bring. If shown two puppies, one who is my ideal, and one that isn't quite, but will die if I don't take it. I will take the less than Ideal puppy, love it, work with it and value it for being the induvidual it is. Warts and all. Because I feel thats the right thing to do:)

Your right, guilting doesn't work. Som' of us tho, feel like we carry the guilt of others who rationalize their way toward a PB puppy. Its hard for it not to spill out occasionally. Those that are VERY committed to this carry a huge burden.
See post likes these annoy me...

You are assuming why someone chooses a purebred is because they're 'pretty' or some vain reason like that. That is not the case nor is someone who choses to rescue necessarily more 'caring' or more of a martyr than one who doesn't.

I feel zero guilt for getting the dogs I have. Don't feel guilty on my dogs' accounts at all.

um, multiple people have sited their reason for wanting a PB was appearance...should I quote them for you?

as far as "caring" more. We disagree.

Either way , its how I feel about it. No one need agree. I care about the dogs life more than appearance or health.

Yeah, that's exactly the problem. There's a superiority complex that some people have because they have rescued. Some people walk around thinking they are better because they adopted a dog and I am lesser because I bought my dog from a quality breeder.

Sort of reminds me of a bunch of poser kids sitting around trying to argue who is more punk rock than the other.

funny, to us, it seems like the people with the "perfect" dogs, act like they made the smarter, better choice and we all must be crazy for wanting a broken dogs. Darn us stupid crazy rescue people, we're so silly:rolleyes:

it goes both ways. No where in my posts did I say anyone was a bad person. Do I feel som'one who does som'thing vs som'one who does nothing is a *better* person. Sure.

Exactly. You will note that in MY post nowhere did I say anything about being bad, but that some people think they are better than me. Thanks for confirming you are one of those people.

.

No, not silly. You're allowed to want what you want. If you want to save a broken dog, that's great.

But frankly, that's not what I personally bargained for when I rescued. I wanted a pet first and foremost- a dog I could take on walks, take to the park, etc.

I didn't bargain on spending money on two behaviorists and countless vet visits and anti anxiety medication to have a dog that will never, ever be normal.

We did provide for her, because she does have special needs, but this is not a choice I would have made had I already not fallen in love with Abby and sincerely wanted the best for her.

I did get my pet eventually, and yeah, she wasn't from a rescue. Yeah, she's normal in every way and I freakin' eat up having dog with no issues. So sue me.

What about people who OWN purebreds AND do rescue?? Just because I want a purebred for my next dog does not make me bad. In fact if we get a small dog next it will be from a rescue/shelter and maybe purebred maybe not.

BUT my Fila will NOT NOT NOT NOT come from a rescue. Period! End of story. There are way to many issues with NOT getting a fila early and i am NOT risking my childrens lives for a dog.

See that's the problem.

We could sit here all day and compare who's done the most. Some people choose to help by rescuing their own dogs, others by fostering, others bhy working in a high kill shelter, others by transporting, donating time and money, etc. So who is the 'best'?

And then there are those that donate to other types of charities that they deem most important.

Obviously you're STILL better than people who bought a purebred, but just not "better" enough. Hate to break it to you, but you just don't care enough. =<

Oh well I geuss all my fosters and countless hours at the shelter weekly all went to waste since I want a stable dog in a breed that you get a badly bred dog it can be a total disaster much less deadly :\ Heck short of a few I think I have prolly done more on the rescue front then the people who are preaching it.

As long as I have had my own dogs, I have never had any mixed breed dogs or rescue dogs. Yes, we had mixed breeds/rescues growing, along with purebred from breeders. I have friends and family who have both mix breeds/rescues and purebreds. The last dog my grandma got from the pound I went with her to pick her out (she died just over 2yrs ago of Lymphoma at just 8 yrs of age - she was a true mutt, hard to tell what was in her at all!).... I've worked at vet clinics for 9 yrs, around all kinds of pure and mix breed dogs.

I have Collies, I have had them going on 16 yrs now, I got my first one when I was 12 yrs old. I have my Collies for way more reasons than their looks. Yes, I do think they are pretty... but along with that, I LOVE their temperament, I love their personality. I don't believe (In MY opinion) that there is another breed out there that "clicks" with me as well as my Collies do. I don't believe for me, there is another breed, pure or mix, that has the same heart and soul of a Collie, that I can see when I look into my dogs eyes. THAT is why I have my Collies!!

But see, taking a risk of bringing a deadly dog into your house at the risk of your children's safety is the ULTIMATE in CARING. That is how you prove you are supremely balls to the wall.

lol beanie you are going way overboard assuming.

I said som'one that does som'thing is better IMO than som'one that does NOTHING.

so even if you've helped out once, IMO you have helped and you are a better person for that. I never said anything about degrees of "better" and "best".

I don't see the issue. There are obviously gobs of people on here that think a PB is better. I think personally a rescue is better....yet iam the one with a superiority complex? Thats funny.

We just disagree. Iam not trying to change anyones opinion. I was just stating mine. Which last time I checked...was ok. ;)

anyway, so laur did you need me to go back and quote those people who said they wanted a PB for "pretty" reasons...or do you see what I se now for the past four pages? You can't be upset at me taking it that way when everyone is saying it. ;)

I dont rank one choice over another. and I certainly dont think that people that rescue are "better" than people who got their dogs from breeders, or vice versa

and for those that think that I went to a breeder just because I wanted a pretty dog, that is the most ridiculous thing ive ever heard

there are PLENTY of very very pretty dogs in shelters. and although what the dog looks like did go into my pro/con list of choosing a breeder, it wasnt the main reason, or even the top 5 lol

People often accuse people that get their dogs from breeders to be "snotty" or "higher than thou" but much more frequently ive run into people that look down on ME because I bought my dog instead of going to a shelter.

"I SAVED my dog, a dog DIED because of where you got yours".. oh please..
its like somebody doing something good and wanting a metal for it or something. Adopting a dog is GREAT but its not for everyone.

I went to a GOOD breeder and got a dog that is perfect for me. He will have a home for the rest of his life. isn't that what matters?

We are all in my eyes, good dog owners who love our dogs (purebred, mixed, adopted, bought) unconditionally, and thats what matters.
I dont think any one of us is "better" than the other!

We love our dogs. period.
