Yessum that's my thinking as well.

However, here, in the baby puppy pic:

He looks like a black and tan, not a sable.

Agree or disagree?
He does in the baby pic, but the dog in the older pics is definitely not a black and tan. He doesn't have any saddle to speak of. Honestly, he doesn't really look shaved either, the way his fur is laying over his shoulders and ribs. Shaved dogs look kind of cottony because of the undercoat.

Here is a picture of a puppy labeled as a 6 week old red sable. It has relatively clean legs and the illusion of a complete black saddle in the picture.

And another batch of littermates, all black sables. The one from the left looks appearance wise like a bicolor at her age. I'm trying to find pictures of them older, but it's hard to know which is which because they aren't labeled by name in the gallery.

ETA: I've seen some sable puppies go through pretty dramatic color changes as they mature, from dark to almost creamy grey, and then dark again. I do think it's the same dog in both pictures. To the OP, I am glad your puppy is feeling better.

to the OP-

I'm not sure why you asked if the puppy was a pure bred if you have both pictures of the parents and you can tell that both parents are pure bred.

Quite frankly, both of those dogs look well bed, and I can't see that combination producing a puppy like the one in the picture. The puppy in the picture looks like the German Shepherd mixes that are on Craig's list all the time.

So, it seems to me that the breeder has been less then truthful with you, or else those dogs should never be bred again because they do not produce better then what they are.

I still don't think that the puppies in the picture are the same dogs, nor do I think that the older puppy is purebred.

Why would he be better if he is pure bred? He is perfect the way he is!!! Who cares what he is... he is your PET. Unless you were thinking about breeding.

Hm, What do you mean?
I mean, we, people on the internet, can not fully determine if your dog is pure bred GSD or not. If you have no plans for him other than a companion, or to do some hobby/sport work with him--then it does not matter if he is pure bred or not. So, we don't have to banter this question around any further.
Now, mixed or pure bred--go hug your dog and enjoy having him. :)

On page 2 I asked if the dog had mange and the OP confirmed that he did. This is why his coat is so sparse. The thin areas make the coat appear a different color than it did in the younger pic. Once the coat grows back in he may look more like a German Shepherd then.

Does his breeder have a website? I'd like to see it.

If you know he is pure bred, then why did you want another opinion? Doesn't make sense.

I don't think he looks very GSD like, even allowing for thin hair due to mange. It isn't the ears, for I've seen GSDs with floppy ears. He looks like a mix. If those are, indeed, his parents, I'd go with the assumption that she was bred by two males.
